long time out of the sector, but govts of all persuasions were moving away from the public housing model that dominated even as late as the 1990s - govt funding favoured smaller, flexible service providers built on social/community housing principles who could borrow off their own asset base

that may have changed recently

Fairly or unfairly, this has coincided with a housing affordability crisis. Plenty of blame to go around.

We need to adopt policies that will unapologetically target housing unaffordability.

This is decades of state and federal policy coming home to roost

It's not an issue at all unique to Victoria

Barak Beacon is the perfect example we have here though

Existing public housing that instead of keeping they want to evict people so a developer can then rebuild on the site

they then pretend the social housing is the same as the public housing (its not) and that the increased numbers are a good reason

they could infill the site with new public housing plus refurbish the existing housing

it would cost less, it woudln't involve evicting people that have nowhere to go and it would increase the public housing stock and government assets

but nope, gotta look after our property developer mates

yeah but i'm interested in your response to the question lol. i can't think of any downside that'd exist if every single landlord disappeared at the start of august
It is impossible to fathom. To answer the question what do you foresee happening to properties if landlords ceased to exist? There are something like 3.5 million residential investment properties in Australia. If you said the average value was $500K (I have no idea if that's reasonable or not), then you are talking about a portfolio worth $1.75 Trillion. Who do you suppose will buy landlords out? Governments? (with what money?) Superannuation funds? (they'd want a healthy return on investment, so you can count them out). This isn't a socialist country, and I cannot see any government willing to take on the burden of become property managers en-masse. Hell, governments can't manage garbage collection, health services or education without making a mess.

Supply and Demand works both ways.

let's make the assumption that a lot of them are still on mortgage, they'd go back the banks and they'd put them out on the market

Pretty funny that NSW response to the no new gas announcement was basically

We're not as bad as Vic yet so I can't be bothered with dealing with the fallout of making sure we don't catch up

They would just have to settle for a price that regular mums and dads can afford to buy them.

rightly/wrongly, govts got swept up in the false promises offered by competition reform ...... govts saw competition policy as a means to dramatically reduce their overall welfare spend by offloading responsibility on to the pvt sector - public housing was not immune from this reform push

and here we are

The "regular mum's and dads" are already landlords, or do you want them to own more than one?

Drove past works for Dans train set yesterday and apparently they are claiming it will take 600,000 car trips off the roads every day.

That’s a very interesting claim that 300,000 + people will dump their cars to go on the SRL every day…
That's not what it means. You know that.

What has become of this state that the government can literally and with full impunity attack the former head of IBAC to tarnish his reputation? In case anyone forgot, Robert Redlich was a Labor appointee.

“Labor MPs have launched an extraordinary attack on Victoria’s former corruption watchdog, months after a secret letter surfaced claiming government MPs had been told to dig up dirt to undermine the agency.

Former head of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission Robert Redlich was hit with a barrage of questions by Labor MPs over bullying claims and secret payouts when he appeared before the state’s integrity and oversight committee on Monday.

Mr Redlich had predicted the attack in a letter to parliament last December – obtained and revealed exclusively by the Herald Sun – alleging that government MPs had asked consultants to “dig up dirt” on Mr Redlich and IBAC to discredit the agency...”

The point being Robert Redlich is not going to go away & will keep Dans integrity front & centre in the Victorian media.

Whilst ABC radio has a crumbling listening audience, Redlichs commentary has no links to partisan politics, making it even more relevant.

the point I was making is that when you quote from news articles you are meant to include a link to the article along with the quote under big footy terms and rules

I didn't make a single comment on what Redlich said Kwals

I was making comment on the language used around the quotes though and SMH/The Age it is

Indeed & I was reflecting on the issue itself.

Digging up dirt on the former head of the corruption watchdog? That is pathetic from Vic Labor, they need to use their time more productively on stamping out rorting.

Dan has been in power for too long if he cannot read the room on this one.

Just listened to Robert Redlich on ABC Radio. A couple of key take aways. He maintains that the IBAC legislation is equipped to deal with misconduct in public office that results in a crime, but NOT misconduct where there is a failure to follow due process, but where a crime may not have been committed. He was highly critical of the Premier's dismissal of Operation Daintree and in saying "there was no crime, so nothing to see folks". In Redlich's words, how improper influence compromised the procurement process for a $1.2m contract awarded to a union-established training group, and compromised the management of the contract was corruption at its worst in public office. And unless IBAC is properly reformed the grey corruption will continue.

Redlich was asked about direct references to Dan Andrews in the Operation Sandon report being removed between Draft and Final Report. He said his tenure as Commissioner of IBAC had ended before the final report was issued. Make of that what you want

& with NO Opposition .....

Gee i must be the luckiest person around renting. I am in a 2nd rental, and both my landlords have been great.

A different times my first landlord would put a freeze on rent for a two year period i was there for 15 years, and when he did increase it was the minimum number, and never hesitated to fix things if we asked.

Current rental moved in 2021, about to have our first increase since moving in and it's 20 bucks a week, for first year did not increase the rent at all. She actually sacked the real estate she was using recently as they wanted to increase the rent by a lot more for the new lease, by sacking them she could keep the raise to absolute minimum.

i guess i'm just lucky.

As I said earlier mine was good like that too. They fixed the few things I asked for and even did some renovations I didn’t which were good.

Only thing was they were sometimes a little slow to respond to requests which isn’t ideal when you’ve got roof tiles displaced and it’s forecast to rain…

But thankfully for me no more landlords for a while 😀😀
