Raises at least two questions How can Victoria afford this? And, who in their right mind would award an event like this to like to Victoria while this government is in power?
Can only assume the Sydney Mardi Gra brings in international visitors and tourist $$ and the Victorian government forecasts the gay games will be like that except 2 weeks of tourist spending.

Victoria cannot afford it but since when has that mattered.to the ALP especially when they are worried about losing support to the Greens given how inconsistent they are with that community. The organisers won't care as long as they get their junkets like the AOC etc

In the Budget handed down in May the Victorian state debt was projected to reach $156.2 billion at June 25. I cant track down current numbers as to where the #'s are now although it was at $115B, however the daily interest repayments on the current debt are somewhere around $20M AUD.

Then they want to spend another $35B on the suburban rail link which by the time it's completed will cost close to double, based on how current and recent projects have ran. The new Metro tunnel was budgeted at $10.9B, costs are now at $15b and it still hasnt been completed.

The state is financially ****ed because of the incompetence of the government and it's inability to manage finances.

And we hear this morning that back in June, 'Tootsie' Thomas, the Health Minister, had to plead with Tim Pallas to release $440M emergency funds so that salaries in public hospitals could be paid.

At a press conference last week Heide Murphy asked Danny Pearson why anyone should believe SRL will come in on budget when no other Andrews / Allen government project has. His response was "we've factored in all possible cost contingencies so we are confident it will come in on budget". Right!!!!

Institute of public affairs alleges that:

  • Victorian government spending has grown by 59 per cent – more than double the economic growth rate – in the same period.
  • State government debt has grown by 415 per cent – a rate almost fifteen times the growth of the economy – in the same period.

stephen mayne worked for kenett so he is well-placed to know what a blowhard he is. silly old jeff is as always full of piss and wind.

All very well to bag Dan's record as Vic Premier, but this Herald Sun campaign Jeff Kennett is running to get his AC removed is just petty. Doesn't he have better things to do with his time?

Your hero, Teflon Dan, consistently demonstrated his utter inability to be held accountable for his decisions whilst in power, walked away unscathed leaving others to mop up his mess, the state in an absolute shambles and Dan having to answer to none of it.

And all you can post is something that isn't news and nobody really cares about it. So typical.

So you are confirming that Dan did in fact, retire undefeated.

If you equate a captain abandoning a sinking ship as "retiring undefeated"... I call it gutless, pathetic and not something a true leader would do

Im sure the IPA is impartial.

Oh wait.

typical mindless anti-dan drivel from you.

the featherbrained blowhard is overcome with jealousy cos dan surpassed him in terms of years as premier. and actually made massive infrastructure improvements rather than just selling off the silverware.

but even more amusing is you can’t see the irony in your post.

Regardless of whether the IPA is impartial or not, Victoria's debt is skyrocketing & government builds are over budget. For all the funds wasted on cancelling the east-west tunnel, comm games, stopping the airport rail link, and overblown budgets on the in-flight projects/builds.

From the AU Financial Review back in May 2024

The deficits are forecast to turn around through a combination of the economy expanding, from $609 billion to $748 billion by 2028, and a slowdown in the major project pipeline, including no new money for the $10 billion Melbourne Airport Rail.

Also slowed would be the rollout of 30 government childcare centres, 35 mental health centres, and 29 school upgrades, and no money for three new hospitals, as previously promised.

About 1400 jobs had been cut of a promised 10 per cent reduction in public services numbers, equal to about 3000 roles. Victoria’s waste levy will increase to $170 per tonne next year, from $129, and the fire levy will increase by an estimated average of $35.

But there is no major hold-up to pet projects, including the $125 billion Suburban Rail Loop, $20 billion North East Link, the $14 billion Metro Tunnel, and the $10.2 billion West Gate Tunnel. Government cant find the funds for critical services but there's no issue with funding the unnecessary rail-link.

The debt is the result of the biggest infrastructure program the state has seen.

EWL would have been a white elephant
Comm games we should never have gone for in the first place.
The airport rail is the result of the airport playing funny buggers.

Budget blowouts on projects aren't new nor are exclusive of Victoria and Victorian Labor.

Sydney Metro City and Northwest. Blowout by 9 billion. A Liberal project.
Crossrail in the UK. Blowout by 4 billion. A mix the UK and London council governments.

Practical Engineering has a video on why budgets go over.

If that were just the case we'd accept it, but the lack of due diligence by this government is unforgivable. SRL has a partial business case covering a small part of the project. Is it any wonder Infrastructure Australia has told the Federal Government it doesn't stack up.

The Commonwealth Games was an embarrassing disaster, all because the government rushed it all through without any proper due diligence,.

The Westgate Tunnel was due to be finished in 2022 or 2023. It wont be ready for at least 2 years and its costs have skyrocketed all because of a lack of due diligence, e.g., contaminated soil.

Seeing the common theme? Of course the government will have us believe it's all linked to Covid, but its not

So why did you post a quote with no link and no context instead of the newspaper report?

And your attempt at rewriting history is noted

How is what is essentially a political lobbying group tax deductible?

We really need to fix our tax rules.

for someone who has gone to the trouble of not once but twice responding to a matter you said “nobody really cares about ” you seem quite invested.

as for your diversion, the point of my post was that a former member of the blowhard’s personal staff was in effect telling him to grow up.

If you did a business case for some the infrastructure we take for granted you'll find it doesn't stack up. People thought the city loop was a waste of time in the 70s. Try running Melboure's rail system without it.

Business cases always undersell the benefits and outcomes of Public transport. Then everyone gets shocked it exceeds expectations.
SRL will do more for this city than any road project will.

In the wash the Comm games shouldn't have been bid for. Jumping out was the next best thing.

They knew PFAS was there before a shovel was in the ground. The delays are mostly due to the squabbling between Transurban and the contractor over it.

Seeing the common theme? Of course the government will have us believe it's all linked to Covid, but its not
Quite a significant portion Covid is to blame. Turns out when you shut the world down people end up with a lot of money. When people have money they like to spend it

it’s a disgrace. presumably, rhinehart gets to claim her alleged million-dollar “donation”. along with the other people and organisations who secretively support this ultra-right outfit.

IPA. Nice drop of beer that. Politic not so much

I would suggest that him passing the milestone that enabled the highest possible pension payout for the remainder of his life would have something to do with his chosen retirement date.

The bloke should be in prison for how badly he has screwed the state.

The debt and spending numbers contained in the IPA's report are able to be fact-checked as they are not a matter of opinion. So rather than go "teh IPA ?!??!" perhaps debunk the figures - if they are wrong, it should be simple.

Shouldn't the responsibility for clearing the PFAS have been clear in the initial agreements if they all knew it was there? Also, we should expect more of governments - it's not like a collection of people off the street with no alleged expertise in, you know, governing. Easily avoidable mistakes should be easily avoided.
