Daniel Wells continues to frustrate me

This has been Wells' main issue his whole career. Surely a good coach such as Dean Laidley should've rectified this 3 years ago........

Not sure you can rectify it. That's just the way he is. The idea is to find ways around it. Jesse Smith would make a huge difference here because throw him into the midfield and all of a sudden the opposition have got another headache that may take some of the heat off Wells. Or, do what Denham said and play his as a "quarterback". But the trouble there is once teams cotton onto it they'll just drop someone back on him. So whichever way you look at it he's just going to have to learn to deal with it. But the team could do more than they're doing to help him out.

Bingo! Surely this should have occurred to the coaching staff by now?

Well dont u worry, Jesse will be playing on the wing next season, in the midfield

I was wrong re Hale as he did take the next step this year BUT there are a lot of clowns here who 2-3 years ago were horrified at the thought of trading Wells for Judd. Because apparently, "Wells would be > Judd." In all seriousness.........

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

Possessions don't tell the whole story, because Wellsy rarely wins his own ball. He doesn't play 4 quarters consistently enough despite his reasonably high possession count. And hey, the great midfielders average 35+ possessions a game.

Without checking the stats I don't think there has been a single player in the entire history of the universe who has averaged 35+ per game.

Wells isn't the problem, if we're blaming him we're looking in the wrong place. Him and Boomer were our most destructive players in our run of good form because the other midfielders were winning contested footy and getting the ball out to them. When the in and unders get thumped like they did the last two weeks then Wells doesn't get the supply he needs to play his role. He's very good though!

Oh, and Goddard is very good as well. Whoever said he was the worst number 1 pick is just plain wrong. (in my opinion)

Why can't he go and win the ball himself?

Not sure about this whole concept of "inside" and "outside" midfielders. How many "outside" midfielders do Geelong have? Hawthorn?

Spot on Pres, watch geelong all there mid fielders are in and under or wide depending on the flow of the game. Wells is good when Harro, simmo, rawlings are on top and nothing when there not.

I have several conclusions about Wells;
Trading him for a skillfully equivalent but harder (at the ball)midfielder would suit our style of game. Somebody that plays with more heart IE Judd/Ablett. These guys play out the whole game like they started.
But is Wells in this category?-NO, not yet. Will he be?

Does he need support to play at his best? Yes. Which means we lack an extra quality midfielder. A straight swap may not change our team so much, as an "Ablett" would not play as well for us as they would for Geelong, which has an abundance of consistent contributers.
So the club needs to focus on getting another "Wells".

Do the coaching team need to play him in a different role EG Half Back as some have suggested or half forward? Playing him in the back pocket for a few games may teach him accountability. Get him thinking defensive. He is a natural attacker.

Well's problem is that he knows he has moments of magic and prides his game on that. However he should focus on the 1% 'ers and his magic will come naturally.

Is he good enough to play for a Brownlow? No-He needs to improve.

Does he appear to not contribute? Yes and I always get a shock when I see his actual stats. My theory is that he appears to beat opponents effortlessly, his run and shrugging tackles looks as if he's jogging. He must be exceptionally quick.

My conclusion we need another quality midfielder to assist Wells. Then we'd be unstoppable and Wells would play his best.

thought wells has been your best player since he come back from injury even better then boomer h

did hes best the other night but the team was relying on him to win the hard balls while simpson and harris and rawligns spectated him

unfortunately for ur team he was actually one of the best players vs sydney

One of the best posts by an outsider on this board

Wells has been excellent since he came back, his one half down game was against Carlton and was probably the best we played as a team this year.

The fact is even if he played his career out as he has in the second part of 2008, people (including uneducated and uninformed media) will continue to sing the unfulfilled and disappointment chorus

He could play the same around 3 or 4 gun mids and look like a star.

Wells doesnt do the 1%ers?

If anything, he does the defensive work and doesnt attack as much as he should.

Oh and Wells was our best player apart from Boomer from round 11 onwards, Rawlings, Simpson and Harris didnt play all too well, so your theory is bullshit.
We'll see how many brownlow votes he gets.
In have yet to see him play 4 consistent quarters. To be honest I haven't seens as many games as you.

Daniel Wells is an awesome player when he's up and about. At the moment Hawthorn have got the same problem with Mark Williams who is a small crumbing forward who gets taken away from the contest all the time.
I am not trying to diss your team but look at the game against the swans. He should have been up and about in that game. I tipped your team to win against Sydney. They didn't do what we all wanted to happen which was beat the swans.
Best of luck next year fellas

Needs to work on building up his body so he can get amongst the thick of it a bit more and get his own ball instead of relying on others. Look at how Cooney has bulked up and given himself the ability to play as both an 'inside' and 'outside' midfielder. Wells is 180cm and 78 kilos, whereas Ablett is 182cm and 85 kilos.
