Player Watch Darcy Moore (Part 2)

I don't believe the issue with Moore is workrate or form or even ability, but it is all about role and structure.

Once Murphy established himself as a true lockdown defender, with the ability to leave his own opponent to impact on contests, it gave Moore (and Howe to some extent) greater freedom to play an intercept role, read the play, and not worry so much about a direct opponent. But it also always relied on at least breaking even in the midfield, so that the ball wasn't being delivered to opposition forwards at an excessive rate. This is Fly's structure and it got us over the line in 2023 (just).

Moore has continued to (try to) play the same role as 2023 this without Murphy. Frampton has covered Murphy's role as a key defender, but he has his hands full with one opponent, and it's too much for him to ask to come off his own man and pick up Moore's (or Howe's) direct opponent as well. Add to this the fact that in some games our midfield has allowed the opposition too many forward entries for us to reasonably defend. Add to this the fact that Moore has not been able to have the same impact with the ball as he had last year, and the system starts to break down. Couple of drawn games we would have won last year, and a couple of losses which could have been wins.

Unless Fly directs Moore to play more as a key defender, the pattern will continue. But that's only one option. The other option is to stick with the plan (In Fly We Trust), and hope that our midfield dominance returns so that we limit opposition forward entries, and create more of our own (possible with the return of JDG, Pendles, Mitchell) and/or that Moore becomes more successful at intercepting and more effective and damaging with ball in hand. If he starts taking 7 or 8 intercept marks per game and setting up attacking forays then opposition coaches will start worrying about Moore instead of us worrying about him.

We don't really have anyone else who is a Murphy replacement. Frampton is demonstrably our best key defender right now, but we are probably still one short. (It's not Dean, he is ok, but just another interceptor).
It's not too much to ask Frampton to come off his man. That's the system; they roll up off their man to impact the contest or player with the ball ahead of them

Fair enough if that's the system. The problem was that the ball went to Frampton's man too often, and no-one rolled off to assist Frampton. Secondly, the other defenders didn't impact the contest when they rolled off often enough, leaving an under-man situation behind them too often.

Apologies if this has been posted but Kane is (sadly) bang on here.

And damn McClure is a whiny confrontational campaigner, and I get the feeling that none of his colleagues can stand him

It is kinda disrespectful to a premiership captain though.

They’d be the same ones saying that their own players should “make them earn it”.

Speaking of which, how was the mark not paid to Darcy Cameron? Mark, free, take your pick!

And the free paid against Noble to Humphrey? WTF?!

The Humphrey free was paid against Moore if it’s the 1 I think you mean, the 1 where Moore also caught Noble high with his hip.

Our system doesn't cope well with teams coming out the front of stoppage in the clear - no defence does - but ours in particular.

P S. Frampton is a battler. Good in a predictable contest because he's so strong, but doesn't react quickly enough. We need to upgrade.

he's been down since mid way last year.. Daniher pulled his pants down in the grand final and its continued this year ..he played a blinder against Curnow R10 last year and its slipped away since .

Continued playing through till the end of 2023 with the ankle injury. We’ll never know the extent of that injury or the impact it had on him.

Billy found himself in no-man's land too often on Saturday night. I'm not sure if it was his (in)ability or instructions. In either case, I'd suggest he didn't have the confidence in his teammates to cover his position to commit fully to any effort.
It's no coincidence that that the Suns forwards played Moore away fom goal and left Billy one out with his direct opponent.

Our defence was found out, for sure. What was even more telling to me, and it's been an issue for a very long time now, was our inability to stick a tackle. We are simply not good enough at tackling with serious effect.

I think they see Dean as the upgrade but at the moment it’s a trade off of Frampton’s 1v1 for Dean’s intercept. Shame Eyre has had an interrupted season as he seems to be somewhere between them in terms of what he offers.

The positive light is this has happened with two months to go before finals. The Suns exposed us in many ways that hopefully can be corrected with the players we currently have. If they do learn from this and we are a contender in finals then the coaches deserve respect. The Suns didn't allow us to play our gamestyle for three quarters. That's good. Maynard Frampton Quaynor Moore Markov Noble and Dean with some floating midfielders have some big games coming up against finals opponents. We will evolve or we will fail miserably.

Eyre is back but for some reason they are playing him forward in the VFL.
Dean is another interceptor, not a lockdown, so not an upgrade on anyone at the moment.
Frampton is the best key defender on our list currently, but that is by default - there is literally no-one else playing that role.

that's why battle or barress or any other key back must be priority

where's the ankle injury evidence ?

if he's injured he shouldn't be playing
We don't have much choice. Every one carries injury sometimes.
when you take the field in an AFL game you take full responsibility for your performances ... so when you are becoming a liability then playing on incapacitated doesn't work regardless off lack of other replacement options

Moore isn't the problem, it's our midfield

Take a chill pill dude.

yes ..with his current form yes ..seriously...larkey 4 in quarter before they had to shift him ..then last week Macrae had to start Frampton on king because of his lack of confidence with Darcy ...at his current playing level he is becoming liability with his output ..hes been a fantastic player for us but he's all at sea currently
