The AFL have to think about if this exact incident occurred in a preliminary final which it may well do as people are trying to win at all costs if they are comfortable suspending a player for a Grand Final for going for the ball and the consequence is an opposition player is hurt.

The hurt players team wins he misses the GF through injury
The non hurt player's team wins if found not guilty would play

Would they suspended a player without question if his team lost the prelim but wouldn't if his team did make the GF?

They need to make it black and white no matter the outcome of the game. Do people think Cotchin would have been suspended if GWS won that Preliminary final and Shiels had to miss the grandfinal through concussion? I bet they would have

It depends on which club your playing for. Sydney took the plugger case to court. This is the biggest problem with our situation, we don’t have a board that puts out interests first. They are appointed by the AFL. The AFL puts our interests below every other club. This affects us in every way, from week to week issues like getting screwed by umpiring to bigger one off incidents like this one.

Personally I hope they give Mackay 4 weeks and then have to face the exact situation you have raised this finals series.

It's an interesting conundrum for the Football Gods if Mackay gets suspended

Obviously the Commandments require him to play so we may cop a Covid resurgence or alien invasion to prevent the season going ahead

No problems with the AFL wanting to change the rules to protect the head even further - how they do it I have no idea ... "you are responsible for your opponent in every contest" - "all head injuries are the responsibility of the opposition that was involved in the incident" ???

The problem I have is that they are applying a possible change to the rules to an incident that happened before the new rule was even thought of!!

Mackay broke no rule, he cannot be charged under a future rule.

Even if DMac gets a suspension, can he argue a legal case to remain at work for not breaking any current AFL rules?

Or can this then become a Workcover case for psychological damage for being penalised while performing fairly and to the best of his ability? Think about it, what kind of job has an employee that busts his guts out to earn his weekly pay, and he gets suspended for being one of the best at the job in that given week?!

The more I think about this, the more hysterical it gets!

Judge: oh, ok. And what were the circumstances?
Prosecution: player Mackay ran full speed with outstretched arms to win the loose football. He arrived at the contest at the same time as his opponent Hunter, they collided. Hunter sustained an injury to his jaw
Judge: and what would have been a reasonable action in the circumstances?
