OK i think this needs to just be sorted out. Compare the draftees to Dawes.

Tim Membrey and Jake Stringer SURELY are better or will be better than Dawes.

What is everyones pick?

Stringer wont be there at 21, Membry a small chance to be there.

Draft is my option, but comparing Stringer to Dawes is unfair.

Yeah pretty much on the same wave length as Cross.

Stringer probably won't be available at 10, let alone 21, and I think Membrey will probably go a couple before 21 also.

I would rather keep 21 and build through the draft, like we planned. Not a big fan of Dawes (don't see any real upside in him) but not opposed to him at the right price. The right price in my mind is around the 30-35 mark and I think 21 would be too much for him. I would be surprised if the Pies couldn't get a better offer than 41.

Personally, think Dawes will be a good get for the Dogs as long as collingwood doesn't screw them over for the trade. He needs an opportunity to just play forward and not be expected to supply the 2nd or 3rd option lead like he was for the last few years.
Still got picks 5 & 6 to get some real cream anyway.

if we draft Stringer then we won't need to get Dawes

You do realise Stringer is not a key position player? He is a third tall/big bodied midfielder. But Stringer won't be there at 21, so it is unfair to compare Dawes to him. It's like saying "if we get Toumpas we don't need Dawes". He won't be at that pick, and is a different type of player.

Josh Simpson, Tanner Smith, Jesse Lonergan etc are much fairer comparisons.

I was not too happy about this rumoured trade for dogs fans...

But then remembered that you still have pick 5 + 6. Changed my mind a little. You will still likely pick up 2 quality players, and anything can happen with pick 21.

He is only 24 and a hulk of a man. Something that at least comes in handy at AFL level for providing a contest, holding ground and crashing packs. At least you are not picking up some lightweight. If only we could transplant our Mitch Brown into Dawes body, being a great mark and kick for goal and kicking 9 in the VFL doesnt count for squat in the the big league if you weigh in at 80kgs.

Its a big if... but if he can regain confidence and form, you could pick yourself a gorilla type forward with anywhere upto 7-10 years in him. Which wouldnt be too bad if he provides a target for a few years and hurts a few defenders.

The more important thing here is to nail picks 5+6. I would be worrying a lot more over how those 2 players end up being than over getting Dawes at 21

OK GUYS !!!

Just got the news 30 minutes ago ...................... Dawes to the doggies is a done deal
Dawes & His manager along with 5 Doggies officials including 1 sponsor nutted out the deal last night at 9.30pm
and will be announced at about lunch time today - They wouldnt tell me what the trade was (i did try)
Congratulations

Big Fan of Dawes and really happy we got this trade. I still recall the days where the pies could kick out of defence so easy due to their big tall options in L. Brown, Dawes and Cloke. Hopefully he can regain is 2010 and early 2011 form.

Saying any player yet to play an AFL game will "surely" be better then Dawes is a bit rich. Drafting is very much an inexact science, what percentage of players drafted in the twènties play 100 games?

Kristian Jakcsh, some phantom drafts have him going around the 13 mark
but you never really know until draft day, because of his combine results/etc

Obviously the broken leg has put a cloud on how high Stringer will go in the draft

I doubt Dawes would attract pick 21 I think the discussions may be revolving around pick 41 ( received for Lake ) or pick 47 (3rd round compensation pick for Sam Reid )

source is a doggies person and just mentioned their part mate
I dont know if there was any collingwood people there or not , was only told about who was there from the Doggies
But doe anybody from the pies really need to be there, they may have talked during the day and come to a verbal agreement waiting to convince Dawes- which might of been the reason for the get together

As long as we dont' give up pick 5 or 6 for him, I think it'll be ok. I'm not a huge fan of Dawes, but he should offer more than a witches hat in the forward line.

I'm feeling better about Dawes coming to the club today (it was all I could think about yesterday), if only to help Liam Jones' development. These two firing on all cylinders would be a massive coup for us.

Hopefully we haven't sold the farm, but I'm looking forward to seeing him in our forward line next year.

This message was also posted on our board. I am assuming that the congratulations at the end means the trade is a "win/win" for both clubs. We will see.

If he does get to the Doggies you are getting a really great guy. Many Pies fans are sad to see him go. The big question will be can he turn his form around. His performance during 2012 was some of the worst footy I have witnessed. The only reason he was not dropped sooner is that we had no other option. Far too much has been made of the ruck role as the reason for his poor form. For what it is worth I hope he plays well for you.

OK i think this needs to just be sorted out. Compare the draftees to Dawes.

Tim Membrey and Jake Stringer SURELY are better or will be better than Dawes.

What is everyones pick?

Stringer was a number 1 pick prior to his injury and is primarily a midfielder - can't really compare him to Dawes.

A more reasonable comparison is Mason Shaw (who I think will go around 15). Remember though, that Mason Shaw is unproven at AFL level, whereas Dawes has had 2 good years (2010 and 2011).

Membrey might be available at pick 21, but at 187cms and not withstanding his 18 years of age, do you really see him as our go to man in the forward-line?!

Like him or not, Dawes is a beast, 195cm and 105kgs. He will take the number 1 defender, and even if his personal stats aren't great next year, he should also be marked on the results of Jones and Cordy, who will benefit greatly from getting the softer attention of defenders.

BTW, Dawes probably would have cost us a pick between 5-15 last year, so he really is a 'buy low' at the moment, and a shrewd piece of business, if he rediscovers his form.

He'll kick 40+ goals for you next year if the trade goes through. People seem to forget how bloody good he was through 2010-11. Stick him in the goalsquare, instead of making him play some quasi-3rd tall/ruck/midfield hybrid and he'll thrive eg. Mitch Clark this year when he was finally made the main figure in an attack.

Will be a bad trade for us IMO, his value is rock bottom ATM, i remember last year when the Bombers (apparently) made a big play for him with a nice DP, his form has obviously gone to shit since then though, i've never rated the guy even when he was in decent form but he did provide a solid contest and his work rate can't be questioned, but he isn't the 50 goal + type and never will be IMO, does provide structure though.
