Dawes VS Draft

Look at how well we scored during our prelim years with a bunch of small guys. Scoring is about ball movement all over the ground. Having a big man is preferable, and hopefully jones, Cordy, Dawes (reluctantly), gumby, etc can lift, but our lack of scoring is more about our overall gamestyle, lack of run, and lack of speed and skill than anything else

Will be dissapointed if we miss out on Dawes.

Look at CLarke at the dee's. His made them competitive with what is a poor side and with Dawes and Howie there they will just get further ahead of us.
I honestly think we have a better midfield and younger core of players then the Dee's and without someone to Protect our Young forward we are going to continue to struggle in that area.

Very true. I still remember in 2009 we were one of the best if not the best kicking team going around.

What appeals to you about Mayes? What doesn't Macrae do that you would like him to? Tbh, I've seen a fair bit of Mayes and he hasn't sold me, yet. Stringer on the other hand...
I think Mayes is a smarter player than macrae. I think his ball use is better and he's a goal-kicker. He can also play forward (bob Murphy style half-forward) and in the midfield.

I can't see macrae being anything other than an outside mid/winger

And look what happened come finals time with no target to bring it to ground...
I'm not saying that I don't want a tall. Ideally you have a dominant key forward, but my point was that speed and ball-use are more important to a team being able to score than just having some big bodies inside 50.

What you mean we had more scoring opportunities than the Saints who had two big forwards?o_O
Then we got smashed the year after with the best forward in the league playing for us. Despite what the media and idiots say a lack of a key forward didn't lose us the 09 prelim. A lack of mental toughness when it counted did.

Why has the Dawes deal suddenly stalled? I was reading yesterday that the Dawes to the Dogs deal was a sure thing?
Because Melbourne are also trying to get him, and have just as much to offer as we do. The Lions have also made a late charge for him.
The word was that he was deciding where he wants to go, or if he's happy staying at Collingwood. I'd expect an answer today or tomorrow.

The thing that worries me about recruiting Dawes is that Collingwood has gone out and recruited a player who is nearly 30 to play the same role as him, a 24 yr old. This shows that the Woods don't rate Dawes all that highly and/or have tired of his lack of consistency.

And how many goals did we manage in Qualifying Finals against Hawthorn, Geelong and Collingwood?

Sweet **** all - that's how many.

It rained goals all bloody season with a small forward set up then dried up come finals time when the pressure was on - THAT's when a big bloody gorilla is needed, to make a contest and bring it to ground (or in Franklin's case, put eight over Lake's head and kill a game by half time).

We didn't have one. St Kilda did. Geelong did. Hawthorn did. Collingwood did.

No coincidence ALL those sides made GF's (and all bar St Kilda won one) where we couldn't.

To play the role they wanted Dawes to play, which isn't what he's best at. Lynch will be that forward/ruck or "Leigh Brown role" that Dawes was no good at.
He's better being a permanent forward.

In one of those QF's against Geelong we clearly were the better team in the 2nd half, but Scarlett played a blinder as a loose man. Having a big target to keep him occupied would have been advantageous, but it was poor kicking for goal in that game, as well as the Saints PF vs Nick 'Louganis' Reiwoldt that actually cost us the game.

If we take our chances, we're are into a GF...

Lets not stress about collingwood pushing Dawes out. Simple logic from their point of view. If they rate lynch and Dawes around the same level, this move is a no-brainer. They sign lynch as a free agent. Costs them nothing.

Then they trade out Dawes for pick 21.

So the net result on-field is the same (ie like for like) and they magically walk away with pick 20 as well.

We could look at something similar. We could trade out Howard for a pick 20 and sign Clint young as a free agent. Similar players. Same net result on field, but we conjure up pick 20.

Of course you're foregoing long term benefit of keeping Dawes (if you're collingwood) and Howard (in our scenario) but by the time the older guys decline, in theory your pick 20 guy is a legit afl talent.

Not in finals it isn't - check out the first 15-20 minutes of any grand final. Any final really - it's bodies hitting contests.

This is not true, and he may well end up staying at the Pies.

Read the later part of this article when Rocket is talking - http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/dees-ready-to-grab-dawes-20121003-26yw8.html?skin=text-only

‘‘I think playing a foreign position may have had a bit of an impact on him.
‘‘His ruck work improved by the end of the year, but his main bread and butter is his forward play, so we would like to think that will improve now we’ve got Lynch.’’

So they have recruited Lynch to free Dawes up to play his natural FF role.

I actually do hope we land Dawes. I think it will give our fwds a better chance to develop and he is the right age bracket and work ethic. We still have picks 5 and 6 (and late picks) - there is only so many kids we need!

Hawthorn QF (08) wasn't about anything other than a team who was overawed by the occasion and I question whether you watched the game if you think Lake played on Franklin.
We almost won the Geelong game playing horribly through the midfield (09).
We had the best tall forward of the year in the Collingwood QF (10).

Way too simplistic. Geelong's tall forwards were also rans, their mids won their flags (except the last one). St Kilda for all their Reiwoldts and Kosis didn't win shit. Hawthorn were just shown up by a team with a non-factor at full-forward.
Quality and intensity wins flags no matter how tall you are.

Dawes to Melbourne. His manager just made an announcement. Deal to be finalised, but he has chosen the Dees.
Happy with this result. Would have been happy with Dawes but now we'll bank the draft picks :)

LOL at the people posting 'inside info" over the last few days of a done deal.

Good get for Demons, they may actually win a game or 2 next year.

I'll be curious to see what they're handing over in return.

He has nominated Melbourne as his preference , may as well move onto to a different topic !
