I've already started. On to episode 6 now. Would continue watching it but I promised my nephew I'd take him to the movies today.

L and Light are both bloody geniuses and I'm already addicted!

Not as much as I'd like to be honest and less as I got older. A lot of what I've seen was popular when I was a teenager which was 20 years ago now.

That's the spirit. You don't need any prior knowledge. It's just Werewolf with some renamed roles and a couple of added easily understood game mechanics
 
I love the idea of the Shinimagi Eyes (probably spelt that wrong) - a very interesting dynamic.

Well, Code Geass is what most people who watch and enjoy Death Note go for next for similar fare. It's got mechs which isn't normally my thing and it's not as good IMO. But it's got a similar psychological cat and mouse thing going on plus the protagonist is bestowed with a similar sort of power as Light. 2 seasons of about 24 eps each from memory. Elfen Lied is also good but a bit on the bloody side for some tastes. A short watch at about 11 eps from memory.

Have to give Code Geass a shot then. I do like the mobile suit shows.
