My prediction for best 23:

Dale O'Donnell Coffield
Richards Jones JJ
Harmes Bont Williams
West Ugle-Hagan Sanders
Weightman Naughton Lobb

English Libba Treloar
Khamis McNeil Bramble Gallagher

Sub: Daniel

Seems as though Daniel and Macrae are on the outer. Will back Dale and O'Donnell to prove their fitness and make the team.
Bramble and Gallagher play where? Macrae to be rotating mid on the bench instead of Gallagher, CD ahead of of Bramble. Khamis the 7th defender can use Williams if needed.

Dale, Daniel, Macrae and potentially JOD not being in our starting 22 against the Dees makes me a little nervous. Some very good senior players...

i hope i am proved wrong but i am amazed that Bramble is getting a game. CD can play high half forward. he needs 15 touches game to have a big influence. His 2nd half against hawks was quite good.
Play Macrae in his best position. Look at Matt Crouch. I think Macrae is a better player than him. He is a mid play him as a mid.
Matt Crouch isn't playing in a team with Bont/Libba in his exact role

Macrae was playing alongside them plus Dunkley previous when he was all Asutralian.

What position are Bramble and Gallagher playing?

I will wait to see the team but media normally pretty on the mark
I can say with confidence, not midfield where Macrae would play

Yes he was,

It didn't win us a flag and was a liability for us,

Bramble will be half back Gallagher be either winng or not in the team

You're comparing apples with alligators.

Neither Bramble nor Gallagher (should he play) will be keeping Macrae out of the side.

Its The Bont, Libba, Treloar, Harmes and Sanders/West who will.

It’s true that in the past Bev seems to have given his picks the opportunity to prove they can’t play at the level, like McComb, Hayes and Gowers. I don’t think that argument applies to Coffield or Harmes, who are proven AFL players, or Bramble who appears to be cover for Dale.

Harmes is filling the utility mid/fwd role vacated by Dunkley that we tried to patch over with Macrae and Scott last year, once Treloar took Macrae’s spot as the preferred partner for Bont & Libba. So I don’t think he’d be directly keeping Macrae out of the team.

Macrae is fighting with Treloar and Sanders for a spot as the third CBA mid/first drop midfielder. Based on the pre-season, you’d have to give the points to Sanders and Treloar. That could change as the weeks go by. But Macrae would want to carve out an effective niche for himself outside of the centre square if he wants to guarantee his spot, as those two currently have valid arguments to stay in front of him for his primary role.

If the team is being picked based on putting in place players with the right attributes in roles around our key players, rather than just wedging our most talented players into whatever shape they’ll fit, I’m all for it. Even if that means some talented players are marginalised for periods over the course of the season.

It is round 1 in a long season. Our best 22 or 23 will rarely be available if at all anytime during the season.

We need to be putting out our best available team, keeping in mind our opponent who also are more match conditioned than we are.

It would be madness, no matter who it is take take someone not 100% into round 1 in a long season, let alone when thanks to the AFL's decision making progress of us playing a team that has actually played a proper game whilst we were twiddling our fingers.

We also have a new fitness team who you would hope would be thinking about the season.

Now Macrae. He missed a heap of the pre season with a hamstring. He had a below average year last year, possibly carrying something, and Bevo alluded to the fact the fitness team do not believe he is ready for senior football.

In his time at the club he has in my opinion been in the best 5 players here. He did drop away last year, and it did not look to be just positional. If the club believes he has the potential to return to something like his best, why on earth would you even consider risking him in round 1, under prepared against a team that is match hardened. Give him time to build his bases fully to give him the best chance for success this year that runs for 23 rounds and finals.

I reckon Daniel is real Sub potential this week.

It doesn't play to his endurance, but otherwise makes some sense
  • can play anywhere on the ground
  • lack of speed somewhat covered by coming on late when players are tiring
  • precision ball use as the game opens up late.
That’s why he’s most valuable coming off the bench. From the sidelines he gets a good look at the game and can fill almost any position that needs his creativity or a boost. Oppositions respect him and they don’t know where he’ll bob up. Subs sometimes don’t even get a run.

This is how I see it. For a few years we have been trying to just play everyone regardless of form, preparation etc... and it hasn't worked. 2 quality wins in two years (Dees at Marvel 2022 and Brissy round 3 last year) with losses any other time we have played a good team. It is a long season, Macrae will get his chance (probably as soon as next week).

I just want the side to be picked on merit to be honest. The one thing I want to see regardless of who plays is intensity, physicality and a bit of mongrel when defending all over the ground. Love our pressure to be in the elite category.
All of these should be non negotiables for every single game we play.

It’s a bit disturbing and somewhat revealing that it needs to be said.

But I fully agree with your post.

Hes a big tough player that knows how to win a clearance, has good enough hands, and hes 3 years younger than libba. I dont see why he cant transition to more of an inside the contest style of player.

Bont can do it all, but he is too good a ball user to waste as a purely coalface player.

I think there is room for libba/macrae as 1st hands, giving it to treloar/sanders/bont

Unfortunately for us apart from a few of our players mongrel just isn’t in our DNA.

This is my best team.

Coffield Jones Richards
Dale O'Donnell JJ
Harmes Bont Williams
West Naughton Sanders
Cody JUH Lobb
English Libba Treloar

Macrae (mid) CD (mid/Fwd) Buku (Back) Mcneil (Fwd)
Yep I’ve got the exact same, not ideal not having a second winger but I’m just not seeing enough extra production from the likes of Gags (yet), Poulter, Baker, Scott over what a rotation of Sanders, Treloar, Harmes, Macrae etc can do on the 2nd wing to justify playing them.

Bramble possibly sub to bring on some run late in the game potentially for a tall at either end when not forced by injury.

Those types haven't shown anything near enough to take out the likes of CD and Macrae. If they were flying then sure but not a chance any of them are ahead.

This is a big challenge.
A team first up, the usual skill errors, potential fatigue, versus a side with a tough hit out under its belt and a 10 day break.
It cant be underestimated what a big advantage this is to Melbourne, the only evener would be if they had some soft tissue injuries from round zero, otherwise its just another example of how the AFL is more entertainment than sport.
dont be expecting too much

The side we send out against the Demons in round 1 will be the fittest, fastest, meanest, sexiest, most erotic, most sensual and most good-looking side we have fielded during Bevo's tenure at the club.
We are now paying $1.01 to edge the Demons on Sunday
