Our backline does not have a cooked Bruce, cooked Keath, ageing Duryea and Gardner as starters this year.We do the same if not worse with our back line
For all the talk of going too tall in attack at the day of last year, we also went too tall / slow in defence. Our backline does not have a cooked Bruce, cooked Keath, ageing Duryea and Gardner as starters this year.
The backline will make or break our season. It looks a lot better but there's only three established players (Jones, Richards & Dale) with a lot of guys that haven't played consistent AFL footy in recent times (JOD, Coffield, Khamis & Bramble). It could turn out really really well and these guys take the next step but there is still a serious risk in that part of the ground. For all the talk of going too tall in attack at the day of last year, we also went too tall / slow in defence.
The overall round 1 balance seems a lot better this year.
Dogs get away to an early lead. Dees get a run on to give us a scare, dogs kick away to win by 45 and look electric!
Generally around 5PM I think? When are sides finalised?
Very disingenuous. They're pulling out quotes from a TV documentary that was deliberately designed to get the players to open up about how they felt above and beyond the normal ways that they interact with the media (otherwise why make the documentary in the first place). In that context, there's no issue with what Schache said, because it's just what many players would feel but just never say to the media because it would be mininsterpreted as to what you're saying. Combined with the fact, that in the limited context that he's talking, he's probably right (even if he's not entirely right in the wider context of what happened)I don’t have any ill feelings towards Schache, am kind of indifferent towards him, though he would probably have some more sympathy from me if he didn’t come out in an article stating falsehoods.
‘They don’t give me a proper chance’: Schache’s frustration with Dogs before trade
The frustration behind Josh Schache’s decision to leave the Western Bulldogs and join Melbourne has been highlighted in a new documentary - and a former No.1 draft pick finds himself at the centre of the drama. Meanwhile, Brodie Grundy opens up about his blockbuster trade to Melbourne.amp.theage.com.au
He's been reading BF!Josh Gabelich said today on Salty Bulldog that Macrae is 100% ready to go but has been left out, not to do with injury.

He's been reading BF!
Could well be right though.
Gablich is close with the club. Was invited on our preseason camp and regularly gets dogs exclusives. He’s a trusted dogs media source, it’s more than likely spot on info.It is in the interest of the press/media that the story is Jack M has been left out of the side rather than injury and he is just not ready
If he gets picked next week will media retract their narrative Nope
Too many in the media for the game so they all have to come up with rubbish

Bevo said on Wednesday that Jack is fit, just underdone as far as game time is concerned. That may be a cover for some other issue but Bevo’s message was he wouldn’t be playing.Josh Gabelich said today on Salty Bulldog that Macrae is 100% ready to go but has been left out, not to do with injury.

I’m wholly aware of the context of which it was said and where it was pulled from. The bigger point is that he believes, whether the statement be within “limited context” or not, that there was preferential selection of JUH over him, and that the club didn’t not give him a proper run at things. His mindset is the problem here, regardless of the context, he firmly believes he wasn’t given opportunity despite playing in numerous finals including a grand final and being on the list several years long than he should have been.Very disingenuous. I wonder how he’ll look back on his years playing for Casey.I’m wholly aware of the context of which it was said and where it was pulled from. He even brings up JUHs VFL performances at the time as justification saying he’s getting 5 touches this week and then none the week after to argue that the selection of JUH over him was an oddity. I don’t care what the context is or what your situation is, that is just petty and such a surface level view of things especially when you yourself are not exactly a high level performer. Seems to lack self reflection in this instance.
May be a great person and friendly human being, but his words here do not sit with me.
As long as we don’t match him up on Fritsch.
In a professional context where their livelihoods depend on it, and any person's natural competitive instinct and desire, pettiness would be par for the course. 99% of players just have the sense not to complain about it in public because of the obvious pushback they would receive. Nobody's suggesting what Schache is saying, especially taking a longer-term view of JUH's development, is correct at all, just that it I think it's strange to hold it against him years on?I’m wholly aware of the context of which it was said and where it was pulled from. His AFL form was just as flakey as it’s been his whole careerIn a professional context where their livelihoods depend on it, and any person's natural competitive instinct and desire, pettiness would be par for the course. 99% of players just have the sense not to complain about it in public because of the obvious pushback they would receive. Just that in the context of a documenatarian filmmaker that managed to convince him to open up in a manner that he wouldn't otherwise to the general footy media, Schache's views are entirely understandable and I don't think it necessarily reflects badly upon him as a person or whatever for holding them. I don't find that odd at all, it's simply good documentary filmmaking.
And if you actually look at game-by-game stats for the period of time he's referencing - he's right. His comparative VFL and AFL form was better than JUH's in a small window of the season, yet JUH was picked ahead of him. Obviously we're talking about a number 1 draft pick who had COVID impacted development so the decision to give JUH games with the eventually correct belief he would be the better player in a very short period of time. But Schache was venting frustration that he was playing to the VFL form that he could be expected to perform to (and was being asked to), was doing it, and it didn't seem to be able to break into the team in the final season with us. That is true. I don't hold it against him for being frustrated.
Claiming that "he should have been on the list several years longer than he should have been" is just not right, either. We can debate his on-field form but he clearly was a capable enough AFL footballer to remain on our list of 40+ players for the length of time that he was. Another club picked him up - if he was truly held onto for that much longer he surely would have faded into post-AFL obscurity? But he hasn't. He's been getting games for another club (and had a contract extended, too).
