Cockatoo - reading some of the phantom drafts, not even listed in some and 2nd and 3rd round in others, why would this be?

Welcome aboard Paddy. Look forward to this new direction in the club. Have been listening to trade radio and they mentioned that he got 28/30 in the Nathan Buckley kicking test at the combine which is very promising.

Without real knowledge I'd say he is a good size, competes well, has speed and an effective user of the ball by foot.
Yeah welcome aboard cos we know u will be reading all these posts

Because most people didn't know who he was until this week, and they probably won't update their phantoms until one last time after the trade period.

It is good isn't it. There is some very lateral thinking going on which is testament to the new approach developing under Simmo

Supporters need to know there is a clear strategy in place with much work going on behinds the scenes. This year it almost appears nearly every player is "seemingly available" but the more names that are thrown up, the more clubs tend to then back off and sit on their hands as it all gets really confusing. Watch Freo do anything in this period to shake Black and/or Kerstan loose.

BOND 007 - how much of role has Simmo had in the change of thinking at the club? Was the recruiting and development team always keen to pursue these avenues and Simmo has facilitated it (as opposed to being stifled previously by Woosha or others) or has he really come in with some lateral thinking that WCE haven't really seen before.

Partly correct SC however it's very hard to benchmark some one like Cockatto as he neither played in the State 18's and being from the NT there is few players to compare him to in his local league .

Remember the( supposed ) greatest kid to come out of the NT was none other than the spud Richard Tambling .
So people are circumspect with Division Two players that haven't played against known opposition.

Having said all that Nakia has had a sensational week both in the GF curtain raiser and now the Combine. I suspect he has wriggled him way into the top 10 after the week just gone . Which means that someone will slide out to us . I would be happy if Laverde slid to us as a result of Cockatoo's performances this week.

Because most of the phantom drafts were done prior to his bog in the all stars game and draft camp testing. He was out for 12 months with stress fractures, people thought he wouldn't be right for the all stars game and testing which means clubs wouldn't have seen him play a game for 12 months. Would have seen him slide to the 3rd round

Not hard to do your own research

A bit of both really. When you have a coach in charge for so long - recruiters are influenced in their thinking and ultimately choices, by what they perceive to be in tune with "what the coach wants". Its not something they will admit as they can validly argue why they made certain decisions, but its very obvious from the outside. So a new coach comes in and they then adjust their thinking again.

However that's doing a disservice to Simmo who has certainly been on the front foot in pushing different sections of the football dept to think laterally.

There is no doubt WC have been very active in the lead up to trade week/fortnight/month much more than previous years. Realistically who would have imagined this time last year that WC would have chased a Syd based 30yr old and offer him a 2 yr deal. Remember this is the club that only offers rolling 1 yr deals when club champions reach this age.

There are no guarantees that the baited hooks will land anything, but I can tell you that they are really circling a couple of players that should make supporters really happy.

Anyone know anything about Clem Smith? saw him in under 18's and really looks like a hard at it type player.Got a decent score in the kicking test today, and Im pretty sure he did a bit of training with us a year or 2 ago. You reckon we have any chance of picking him up??

Shows how redundant that kicking test can be.

Brophy won the clean hands test at the Combine. Not sure if that means anything though.

For a guy not used to the Sherrin that's pretty decent. Clean hands test has been pretty effective at determining good ball handling (See Heppell 2010), for instance i'm not surprised that Keitel and Cripps did really well in it. For talls they use the ball like inside midfielders when they go by hand.

Non WA clubs might be steering clear of Pickett, though...
