They are the scientific equivalent of rubbing a bit of dirt on it. :)

A bit of distraction under the guise of Melzack and Wall’s gate control theory of pain. To each their own though.
You have gone past my pay grade. Don't try to blind me with your trick science.

Jonbe54's chakras were out of alignment. You all got a bit carried away with the realignment process. It's par for the course in a forum which seems more about a p-ing contest than considered opinions on football. Looking at you 76WS.
The question is where Ginni's chakras are at. I doubt a murky photo of a tongue & missing hand is going to have an impact.
Overreaction on these hallowed pages?????

Count on it.

No argument there '76 and I would contend that we are getting every deeper into a repressive downward cycle.

The question is . . .

Does this cycle represent a deep enough trough to permanently warp scientific outlook?

I contend that it has a strong chance of doing so.
Jonbe . Science is a method. You test a hypothesis by running an experiment and if done correctly this contributes to a body of knowledge. This knowledge is a tool which can be used by humans for both good and bad things. Is the tool bad? Not in my opinion its the people using the tools that do bad things with them.
Corporations exploit science to make money on the backs of sick people and their families. Dictators exploit science to make biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. But people also use science to create medicine, vaccines, antibiotics, electricity, grow food and many other benefical things.
To summarise the products of science can be used for both good and bad. Its people who make these choices not science itself.

Fun fact: George Lucas’ inspiration for Star Wars was ‘Nazis in space’ …

… now you’re going to get Scritchyscroony all fired up again :)
Yes, but what sort of fact is this? Is this a fact that you are going to back peddle like a unicyclist from on your next post? Or a fact like we all know ginni was actually searching for his car keys? Or a fact that if Nazi's didn't wear white coats the holocaust would not have occurred?

I had a conversation with a work colleague 2 days ago where she was saying she cannot go out anywhere, shops, nightclubs, bars, public transport etc without someone going up to her and hitting on her and that groping happened a lot too. She then told me that this is the same with every one of her female friends. It opened my eyes a bit cos I never realised it was that bad.

The media bringing up this video right now is actually an indictment on the media because they are using it for clicks before the finals, but its also an opportunity to point out that this type of behaviour is just not on. It wont happen because of who the person who groped is.
Yet the many young women in my circles-daughter, daughter in law, sisters and friends have been going out and socializing for years without incident. I find the catastrophic comments made by people saying they cannot go shopping, on public transport, shops, nightclubs, bars etc. without out being groped/assaulted incredibly hard to swallow. In an age where victimhood is worn like a badge of honour and it seems many people enjoy being a member of the club. Everyone of your colleague's friends gets assaulted every time they go out too. It sounds hyperbolic.

So have they reported these assaults? If not, why not? There has never been a time when police are more willing to take action on any of this behavior. Is hitting on a girl the same as groping her? Is hitting on a girl permissible if you are a hunky stud or drive a Porsche and a crime if you are ugly and have bad breath?

You say it opened your eyes. You never realized it was that bad. I'd suggest it's not. I use public transport. I go to shopping malls and in all of the many decades I have done this I have never witnessed the assault of a women /girl and very few incidents involving the assault of males. Where are the witnesses in the shopping malls, trains and buses? Most people would immediately intervene if they saw someone simply bothering a girl let alone groping or assaulting them.

I'm a glass half full bloke. I think our society is generally a safe one for most citizens and the fact that countless women are out at nightclubs, bars, shopping malls and using public transport seems to support my positive outlook. Does your work colleague continue to go out to all of the places she mentioned in spite of the endless assaults or is she now housebound?

The fact that this Dusty incident happened five years ago says a lot about the rarity of such behaviour from footballers. Almost all of the stories about DeGoey, Dusty, Beams etc have ultimately been nothing burgers but the damage done to their reputations is permanent.

Why do I always step into these discussions and posts? Because comments like those made by your colleague cast aspersions on all men as being potentially sleazy creeps and I think the endless blanket demonization of men and victimization of women is wrong and damaging to our society.

Women are never harassed or groped. Got it.

Words. Science is a term that can refer to a method. It can also refer to a body of knowledge. History has shown neither the method nor the body of knowledge fool proof. Since humans are fools this becomes an issue. Whilst this method has delivered a body of knowledge that humans have found incredibly useful it is simplistic (no personal offense intended) to describe it as a tool that can be used for good or bad. Often it is what we don't know as we use what we do know that creates the problem. A simple example might be modern medicine and various drugs.

Anyway, the notion science (knowledge/method) is somehow inherently different or better than religious/cultural beliefs is questionable. In almost any area of science if you push to extreme you find these bits we don't know, can't explain. The big bang is an obvious one, geolocation of so many species, how bees fly (or communiate & remember) being other examples. At this point we are left with a don't know, a belief in something that explains what we know and a faith in what we don't. Science is another religion.

Somewhat off topic, indigenous Australians had an understanding of how to live in their environment that transcended individual knowledge, that seemingly didn't come from a scientific knowledge and is not described in a scientific language. An example of this is the fire pattern burning across Australia. Now we can assume this knowledge did not come from an individual understanding/insight, nor was necessarily understood in a science sense by anyone at any point in time but rather was the wisdom of the ages. It is only very recently (last few decades) that western science has started to realise the importance of this knowledge and is attempting to learn from it. My point being science a body of knowledge and a method but like most religions tends to exclude other bodies of knowledge and other ways of gathering said knowledge.

If you want a belief system and a faith - which I think we all have regardless - then put it in the pies. Don't fall for the erroneous faith we are going to always win, just believe we are always going to provide joy.

Your initial post was clearly an exaggeration of the highest order. From either you, your colleague or both. The below is clearly over the top.

"...she cannot go out anywhere, shops, nightclubs, bars, public transport etc without someone going up to her and hitting on her and that groping happened a lot too.."

Really? For once, Domey is on the money by calling out this alarmist garbage. No one in their right mind thinks that women being treated poorly is acceptable, but to suggest some poor damsel is having to deal with being "hit upon"(nebulous term) anywhere she goes is just b/s and does not do anything to further the discussion.

Do better.

And then you write a silly comment which I never said.
My original post said that the media was grubby for bringing it up at this time but its also a chance to say that this behaviour is not on. Which its not, i dont care if it was a stripper or Margaret Thatcher you cant go groping a woman's breast no matter what. I just spoke to my colleague again about your post and she laughed and said that she never expects men to understand that what happens is vile and that it happens constantly almost every time she goes out. She has been told by the guys that this is part of the courting process lol
Let me ask you, should Dusty have groped the stripper just because she is a stripper? would you condone that behaviour and is it a great visual for all Dusty's young supporters out there?

So now it's almost every time?

lol I am just telling you what i have been told by her!! I have never gone out with her as she is in her late 20s but she has shown me multiple texts from different friends all saying this dude wont stop harassing me.

I think your colleague is an attention seeker or she hangs out in the back streets of St Kilda all day.

So your friend goes to the supermarket or Myers or the fish n chip shop and gets groped by strangers almost every time and gets told "don't worry, I'm just courting you"? - it doesn't sound realistic.

My kids are early 20's (one female) and the only time you could say that this groping type behaviour is a common thing is at nightclubs on the dance floor.

No body should place their hands on anyone without permission. Sexual assault is a vile crime. It doesn't matter what your job is, bodily autonomy is your right. Female strippers are generally very safe. I agree that the media is very grubby and without scruples.

One of my mates ran his own stripper business for years and if a bloke so much as lifted a finger in the general direction of the girl it would be snapped off by a bouncer. However, male strippers get scratched, groped and mauled by their female audience and it is laughed off as girls letting off steam. One of the Mooroolbark player's was a parttime stripper and I know the men faced a far rougher ride than the females do. It's just another double standard.

Your colleague can laugh all she likes. I'd prefer she respond to each of my questions. Which shopping malls and what train line does she use? I'll let the women in my life know so they can avoid them. Ours appear to be safe havens. What is part of the courting process? Groping a girl's breasts? What bloke would ever say that?

You know as well as I do that females grope males in nightclubs. The difference being that any man who reported that a girl had groped him without consent would be laughed out of the cop shop. True story. A male friend of mine was groped at a night club in South Yarra and partly because he was fed up with the double standards he shouted at the girl to keep her hands to herself. He was told by staff to settle down and stop causing a scene. He is hot headed but did nothing physical-he simply continued to ask what was going to be done to the girl who groped him. Guess who get manhandled and removed from the nightclub?

If a bloke squeezes a girls bum and she reports him he will most likely face charges, lose his job and reputation. That's a two tiered justice system and that is wrong in any context whether based on race, religion or gender.
