The problem is not doing the wallpaper in those sizes or even much bigger.
The issue is getting hires shots of the players, as nearly everything is taken from the web. These pics are usually compressed down to an acceptable size for upload with resultant loss in quality, especially when you start to make them bigger.

By "thumbnails" I assume you're being flippant (what a nice word) as you're running a huge desktop resolution. The wallpapers are all the correct size when I "save image as" tehm and then open.

No by thumbnails I meant the pictures do not link to bigger pictures. I didn't mean thumbnails compared to my widescreen res.

I was thinking perhaps just extending the background, not the actual pics of players for the higher res, it mightn't look good but it's a hell of a lot better than stretching or centering lower res backgrounds. However your backgrounds (background of the wallpaper that is) are more dynamic and actually include pics of the players and not patterns/user made designs.

EDIT: I went to the location of the pics, but the 1280 x 1024 are still only 1200 X 800, I think photobucket is resizing them for you or something.

I will have a look and see what's going on.
I have noticed that BF has decided to resize as well, at least for viewing purposes.
