Has been clearly our best player this year and last. I would shudder to think of what those ridiculous losing margins may look like without him :|
I doubt whoever we drafted with those picks would be able to better his impact. And with us he has only gotten better so far (debatable whether he is better with us now than he was 2nd season at Geelong, too may variables). Here's hoping he has another 5+ years with us.

The other interesting tidbit is our clear 2nd or 3rd best player right now has been Jones - also recruited from Geelong. Except this time the price was right...
Look, I'd argue it's not debatable. He finished 4th or 5th in the Brownlow kicked 24 goals for the year from midfield (including 3 and 30 in a prelim) and rightfully took out a place in the AA team. He's having a great season and has stood up massively this year, but he's not at the level from 2019 (purely my opinion).

However, to go back a step, my point made was purely at another poster throwing a tantrum at the thought of Geelong recruiting this player in question and putting it down to an unfair advantage that Geelong are exploiting (why Deven Robertson would be so attracted to the Victoria Surfcoast lifestyle I'm not sure?). I believe this reaction stems back to the bad blood that some BigFooty posters hold over this trade with many West Coast fans feeling that (at the time) they were made to pay too much by Geelong.

I agree, Jones has been good the the Eagles for a couple of seasons now and is playing a role for the team, glad to see him succeed!

You're right, he hasn't reached the levels when he was at Geelong.

The main reason for this IMO, is that now he is playing in a team most weeks when he is the main man.
Shuey, Yeo, Sheed etc have all missed a lot of footy.
He's always under the pump when he gets the pill.

In Geelong, he was behind Selwood, Dangerfield etc.
It's a lot easier in a good team.

True, we have a lot of fans who can't move on.

Yep, I don't disagree with that.

I should preface, when I said "it didn't really work out" in my initial response, it was reference to the situation that WCE are now in is probably quite different to where they thought they'd be when they pulled the trigger. I rate Kelly, it's great to see him playing good footy again.

I think we would be more inclined to give you a future 2nd rounder so we can hit this draft hard
That would probably be pretty attractive over a third now. Noting we are probably looking at Levi Ashcroft and another academy kid in the next year so second round picks could be handy.

Really hope Dev gets a run for the next month while Zorko is out. He is too good to be stuck in the VFL and a solid run in the team in a role would be good for him

trolling?

biggest and most prestigious club in a football state. freo nowhere near it

if a kid wants to go back to WA, who do they pick 9/10?

Like who?

Kelly was our 1 every 10 year decentish trade quality wise.

Ok....ok 8 years ago we got lucky with Yeo.

Compare the quantity and quality that Geelong attracts.

Players if they can help it simply dont want to travel and live in WA. An odd one moves back and the rest are pretty much free hits 3rd round trades or DFA's looking for one last chance.

Wellingham, Cripps, Jetta, Redden (obviously alongside Yeo and Kelly). Just off the top of my head? Think all of them were returning home to WA too?

If Dev doesn't get meaningful game time this year and perform at afl level his value won't be much more than we paid for Sam petreski-seton .

Brisbane need points to get Ashcroft's younger brother and other Academy players coming through in the next few years.

The Eagles 3rd or 4th round pick this year should seal the deal.

we already have all the draft capital we will likely need for next year to match bids

as last trade period showed, accruing a horde of points with junk picks is not a challenge at all even when trying to juggle other matters....

This is year 4 on your list for dev and for whatever reason he can't get a game .

Then when he is played is not in the same position that he plays in the VFL

Just needs to be let go to get opportunities

One big (and probably the main) reason why he can't get a game is his kicking needs a ton of work. It limits him from playing most positions effectively aside from as an inside midfielder where you can hide his kicking skills.

He'll leave if he wants to leave; he's out of contract so we don't really have much of a choice.

On the plus side for WC, he hasn't shown to be particularly injury prone.

4 years in a system and my experience is that kicking will not improve significantly

Causes? Rushed for time. Incorrect ball drop. Body balance. Lacks mental poise at time of kicking. In traffic and goes to instinct of move forwards at all costs. And others

He is as advertised and won't improve much in his kicking if it is poor even at the VFL level

4th rounder looking more likely

I do like his durability - much better than Joyce

Redden was from SA.

All those players bar Kelly are from when?

And how many are top quality ex 1st round picks? Maybe one of them.

Now compare the quantity and quality versus players Geelong and Collingwood have attracted for example. Even Brisbane now.

They are miles ahead. Length of the Flemington straight ahead.

All in the last ten years?

Yeo & Cripps were both highly rated youngsters in a similar vein to Bruhn and Henry that neither club wanted to lose. Jetta was a 1st rounder and lead Sydney in goals the year they won a premiership. They along with Redden all played key roles in your 2018 premiership.

Wellingham was another highly rated player who'd played in a premiership at Collingwood and cost you a 1st rounder if memory serves.

Miles ahead is not accurate at all. In fact, take Cameron out of the mix (who in the year prior to us recruiting him had been dropped by GWS and as a result they weren't willing to offer him a contract until Geelong did) and it's actually quite even.

Also, I see you've brought Collingwood and Brisbane into your argument now too, are they also taking advantage of Geelong's relaxed lifestyle as a means to lure players?

It’s such a lottery the draft on both sides isn’t it? At Brisbane he finds himself fighting for the role he is best suited to. At another club (mine for example) he’s probably getting a game most weeks.

Like Dev, think he has a place at AFL level. Hope he gets the chance to prove it, even if it isn’t at my club.

And for the record, IMO WC’s real mistake wasn’t trading for Kelly. They’d done so much work with him & his family they couldn’t back down. The real mistake was drafting Brander at 13 over Allen to begin with in 2017- that second pick would have seen us with the chance to pick Kelly before Geelong.
