Pre-Match Build Up [R2PM]

Ahhh… first home game of the season. What a momentous occasion! My first game on the turf that we call home, the Snow Dome! Well, OK, it’s not really on a Dome, it’s more on a, well, plateau with the stadium on it (Come on, did you really think there was going to be an oval on top of Mount Buller itself? Get real! But you can see it in the background! So high…), well… if you could call it a stadium. It’s only got one stand, with terraces all the way around. We call this the Pump Stand, named after the original founder of the club, BIG POPPA PUMP (who also changed names and has disappeared off the face of Sweet) when it used to be called Team Pump! (Talk about pumping one’s ego by naming a club after yourself. Then again, that’s a much better than then some other names… Team Timmy? What the heck?)

Anyway, this stand is very popular with our more… ahem, traditional fanbase, known as the ‘Berry Blues,’ named after a rather expensive and prestigious wine in the area, and one that the fans will often be drinking. I had talked to the seniors about what to expect for the big game for the first time, and they told me… don’t expect much of an atmosphere. They’re the type to give golf claps while drinking their expensive wine from the warmth of the stands. They’re not the ones to get involved. I then inquired what about the support that cheered us on at Waverley Park. They of course told me that just like any other football club, the away support is the louder and more passionate group of fans. They would be the ones getting in their car to travel in their expensive Bugattis, Ferraris, and Lambos to whichever ground that we will be playing at. These fans are simply known as the ‘Bitter Reds,’ the ones that prefer to drink beer, be loud and be the kind of million/billionaire that just likes to have a jolly good time, just pretty much doing whatever the heck they want. They would be the ones standing up the railing, cheering us on, because they believe that is the correct way to support the team. That would be the source of the noise around the ground. I have to admit, it’s a unique experience having the loudest and most passionate parts to not be located behind the posts.

I have to admit, I only heard of the Snow Bunnies, so this was quite the learning curve! They also told me that its thanks to the majority ruling Berry Blues, that’s the reason that we don’t have a song, there’s just not enough passion in the ground.

The ground is said to hold 30,000. It looks like a tight squeeze, but I bet the terraces have a good role in ensuring that the capacity is respectable. There is a bar there, and well, I shall be talking more about that come the next home game, for I something very special coming up. It’s not ready, but stay tuned!

During the week, I don’t know how, but the news of the BRAB v Okeydoke7 saga had actually made it to the press of this ever crazy media, who are just hungry and desperate to get their hands on any bit of news that they could get their hands on. So, basically, the Leadership group thereatened to swap both OkeyDoke and BRAB around, so that OkeyDoke was going to start at Full Back (the position I filled in last time). OkeyDoke claimed that the only posts he’ll make is to get out of the club by means of a trade. Many people thought that this was just a ploy, as if we were going to do such a thing!

Oh how wrong they were when the teamsheets came out! Okeydoke struck true to his word, and BRAB was ready to rip it up now that he has been given full permission to go crazy, especially after his last game.

Match Day [R2MD]

Things felt a bit different this time around. I had one game under my belt, yet there was something very unnerving about all this. These are my home fans. Granted, the sound was not quite as loud as I would’ve liked it, but that wasn’t the intimidating factor. It was the Berry Blues, giving their golf clap as we came out to the eerie silence of the fact that we don’t have a song. I felt their eyes on me, just that judging gaze. Am I truly worthy to be out on the pitch amongst my fellow teammates. Their money pays our salaries, and well, they want to make sure they made a wise investment choice. I wasn’t really being supported, I was being judged, as if I was up for a performance review, and they will hold me to it every quarter. If I don’t deliver within the game, then a word or two could be spread to my higher ups, and well… that could mean my expulsion from the team if I don’t deliver. It’s my first home game, and ready the fans are going to write me off then and now if I don’t deliver. First impressions count, and if I value my Qooty career here at the Demons, I need to show them the investment made in me was the right decision. Unlike your usual fanbases, I am certain the Mount Buller fanbase has considerable sway. Even the captaincy is held in shares! Seriously, Van_Dyke and RU_ showed me their share certificates to show that the 49-51% thing actually did have a serious meaning. VD said he had tried his best to buy the last two shares to get his majority, but RU_ felt like that VD was low-balling him with his offer. This whole club is one mean corporate environment!

I was going to start on the Right Wing again, and hopefully this time, I will be staying there. My opponent this time would be the less decorated Barrels. He was… OK. Just an OK guy, playing for an OK team. To be frank, the homonyms of the words OK took on a very negative meaning around here in recent times. Barrels was the very definition of the term OK. OK is adequate, especially with the talent onboard, but I’m more than an OK Qooty player, and if I wanted to show the team what I was made of, I needed to show that one doesn’t just stick an OK player to be my opponent. I needed to make up for lost time in defence.

Things were very tight in the first quarter. We were trading scores and finished up all even on 20 apiece. One standout was Oddhawk, he enjoys a good game against the Roys, and it seemed early on, it was no different. It was just a shame that he forgot to pack his kicking boots, as he had three opportunities, and only got the open square goal from the left half flank.

My first kick of the game was a bit wonky as I found the father of the league. To think I did all of the hard work in evading that tackle as well. Mobbenfuhrer may be a well seasoned player, but he still hits hard as he smashed cats2rise hard in the mouth. Ouch! I think I felt my mouth hurt from watching that, and I wasn’t even the one that got hit! Yet our brave Vice Captain shrugged it off and managed to win the ball. Mobbenfurher is tough, but our vice captain is even tougher!

However, shortly after that came something truly special. Mobbenfurher stuffs up his kick, Barrels fails to read the line, and I just snatch it off the bounce and run away like I stole the thing (hey now, I actually did). I couldn’t see any clear opportunities, so I just went for the classic torp, PING! Sweetly off the boot, 60-65m out, maybe even 70 out. I don’t know how far, but I was in line with the centre square (if there was a centre square on our ground) as it just bent back just enough, goal posts high, and out of the plateau for a hell of a goal! I gave it to Barrels, rubbed it in his face. OK’s alright, but I’m more than OK, I’m a rookie that’s just about to make my grand entrance into this league! My teammates came all round to celebrate that awesome goal! What a way to score your first! I don’t know how long the longest goal is at the Snow Dome, but I felt that had to be pushing it! Big Man with a Big Kick for a Big Goal! Get in!

I’m not even going to talk about the other two incidents in the quarter, because I was still on a high after that goal as we started the 2nd quarter and got on to an early blitz, 58 to 28 with little time in the quarter left. This is where things got interesting because a really unorthodox substitution occurred. Lanky_Wes on for Azarole at FF… Truth be told, I don’t really know a lot about Lanky_Wes. I mean, aside from the fact that he is a Mobbs Medallist, but it seemed in recent years, he has struggled to recapture the form since. But little did I know at the time, I was about to learn a serious lesson about Lanky_Wes today!

Though not before the one known as Fred started to lead the counter for his team. Fred was the Full Forward that Okeydoke7 was given the responsibility for, and well, let’s just say he wasn’t exactly performing up to the task. It was all too easy for Fred as the team clawed it back to just 11 points as we led 59 to 48.

Oh boy, just when you thought the Okeydoke show couldn’t get any worse, he plays two teammates and himself in what had to be one heck of a massive panic. Instead of just booting it out, he plays the handpass to DemonJim, who is about to be wrapped up, so he gives it to Oddhawk, and then… I have no idea what happened as Okeydoke is stripped of the ball and the big man gets yet another goal. Oddhawk and DemonJim were giving some seriously dirty looks at Okeydoke, and if I recall correctly, that was likely his last actions for the game as I don’t remember him getting off the bench after that. I believe the coach has had enough of that display. I think I even saw Van Dyke showing great signs of relief after that move, clearly Mr 49% had enough of that atrocious display as well.

I remember this play, because I had a bit of tiki-taka with DemonJim, showing off how good handpassing should’ve been done (though to be fair, Okeydoke really should’ve kicked it out).

Yet again, the quarter was a tough tussle, with Fred (That guy seemed to be very happy, and he had every right to) and Lanky_Wes turning back time with some vintage performances as the quarter ended up 84-79 in our favour. It looked like both clubs were going for a grandstand finish! Gee, I hope I have done enough to win over the Berry Blues.

Although, I did see some weird things this quarter, like Azarole, and then Van_Dyke being ruck-rovers (many fans claim for it to be a sign when they saw Van_Dyke coming on to replace RU_, oooo!). What the heck was going on there? Did coach find my secret brew? That stuff wasn’t ready yet! The recipe wasn’t quite right for that batch! It was a tight game, 85-82 at that point I think, now was not time for this!

Yet amazingly, he clearly knew what he was doing, because we started to blow past the tired looking Old Boys, err…. Roys.

Players like Mooch, Klim, Allikat, that eye-patch guy… number 69 (real mature), and A Bit High (not after that game, you are) were starting to tire out a little bit, and that was all we needed to just blast past them.

During the middle of that, I just remembered something… I had barely seen the Demons Number 1, the other major player in this saga. BRAB! He was… coming off the field? It’s weird, I mean, BRAB’s a very notable figure, everyone loves the guy, probably considered the best all round guy out there, tied with Blacky if you were to ask many (and especially by some spectacled Smurf). Yet… I could barely remember him getting any action this game. What could be happening? I was going after open targets, like Sante (I’m sorry I didn’t mention you last time!), cats2rise, and of course Lanky_Wes. I remember BRAB scored a solitary behind for the game, but outside of that… yeah, I think the popular fellow is more used to stopping leads than making them, as he also was moved to the bench... where Okeydoke7 was waiting. I don’t know if the coach forgot about it, but it seemed rather ironic that neither man were able to perform in their new positions. I for one am glad that I was on the other wing, so suffer RodneyDangerfield. In hindsight, I guess you lucked out with securing Wooshette for an interview after the game, but you certainly had an interesting time for the last half of that quarter!

After a close match, we blitzed them in the end. Nice to finally have a good finish to the last quarter for once. We’ve taken it 123 to 89. Kinda wish we had a 20th goal, but it didn’t matter.

I looked to the Berry Blues, a golf clap, as to be expected. But I could’ve sworn I saw this middle aged Berry, looked me in the eye, lift up his pinot, almost as if he approved of my performance. DemonJim also relayed the good news, I was officially an accepted member of the compan-err, Mount Buller Football Club. I had won their approval, and how!

Best of the Best [R2BB]

BRAB: Best on Board, Worst on Ground.

If I do say so myself, I think I was one of the best on ground. Kept my OK opponent very quiet while chipping in with the Goal of the Round, 27 touches, 8 marks, and 3 tackles. I think they rated me 2nd best on ground after Oddhawk, and I’ll happily take it!

Oddhawk continues his fine form against the Roys. 15 hitouts, 30 touches, 4 tackles, 2 goals (should’ve really been 4 though). He had the better of his opponent, and honestly, he looked really pleased with his efforts. He really likes playing against the Roys!

Lanky Wes has to be mentioned. Turned back time with 6.1. That deserves a bigger mention, but then again, it seems like big bags is sorta expected from Full Forwards in this league. I don’t care, I’m recognising that as a great effort!

DemonJim had 26 touches and 7 tackles, along with a nice goal. He’s continued the professional work on the field as usual. Okeydoke could learn a thing or two about the way he goes about his business.

RU_ also had 30 touches and a goal (and also very good with the umpires too) despite being banished to the backline, where he did a pretty good job in silencing what little chances the Roys had. He probably would’ve been the real 2nd best on ground had he not been called in to fill in. I don’t care what people say about his captaincy, he’s a good captain, does a lot behind the scenes and on the field too. He seems to be more active than usual by given standards (although I must admit that he does have a little more way to go in regards to that!)

Cooney is just like DemonJim, just keeps chugging along. 24 touches, 6 marks and a goal. I can see why he’s our reigning B&F winner.

My 3, 2, 1:

3. Lanky_Wes

2. Oddhawk

1. RU_

I did well, but I thought those three were better. Not to worry, I know my time will come.

Post Match [R2PM]

Despite my warnings, BRAB let out the ***** again, and well… I said I’d let it go after my performances, though it will be a late night for me. It seems like ***** wasn’t the only thing he let out, because I just saw one of our sows on Mount Buller. This was going to be a long night alright, and I certainly don’t mean in the drinking sense.

I caught up with Mobbenfurher about the league. He was quite proud about what the league has achieved in 16 years, now that we’re in the 23rd season. There did seem to be some rough edges in the league, but otherwise it has been running strong. He did admit that there were a few things that needed a bit of TLC, like the archives on the league. I decided to volunteer in giving the files a bit of updating, including chronicling the current season. Perhaps it would prove to be an opportunity to scroll back and learn a little more about the league and its history as I try to update the happenings from the local statisticians (I know Oddhawk is one of them, so he does more than just the Demons in regards to stats). The world of Sweet does have a rich history, and certainly with its own interesting bits of culture, as I found out from Ant Bear. It would be so wonderful if I could discover these cultures and expand upon what is currently existing to make the Sweet FA’s history truly shine. It’s more than just a league, it has its own personality, shaped by the players and clubs that call the league its home.

It would be absolutely fantastic if I could capture just an ounce of all that Sweet has to offer and keep it updated, so that future players may get to learn upon the rich tapestry that has been woven out, recording the events of the very first season, and by learning the identity of the clubs that make up this league.

I hope to make sure Season 23 is kept up to date to the best of my ability, and hopefully we can all look back at this season with good memories.

For next week, I’m going down to Abdu Prison to give my final rites to some prisoners that are about to be executed. I wonder who will be the lucky player that I will send off to his death?

We’re two from two, and it would be nice to keep this run going!

Yeah, I get it, you like your news in bite size pieces.

Too bad, Match Reviews and building are important too!

It's good media Fryer.

You just didn't manufacture a scandal so nobody is going to melt and keep the thread active. Doesn't mean your post isn't good.

Cheers for that.

That's why the public prefer stories about bad atheletes, rather than the ones visiting the hospitals after all, we all like a bit of naughty there, lol.

I'm not discouraged, I will keep track and bring to life our matches!

I sometimes wonder why media like this doesn't make it more than a page or two yet some of drivel just goes on and on... I suppose that's the Sweet FA!
Nice work Tucky :thumbsu:

Look at the quality of some of the banter about the place and you'll find your answer.
