of course not...

it's just a shame that the Italians were never reall down to 10 men - they started the match with 12!

The better team over the 90 minutes did win.

Italy dominated it when it was 11 on 11 with 3-4 good chances created vs nothing. Even with an extra man Australia created nothing for the whole game.

The way Australia lost was a disgrace but they had 90 mins, 40 against 10 men to get a goal. Italy's defence was better than anything Australia could throw at them.

We didn't get the chance to see if the best team won.

Australia only dominated possesion because the Italians let us dominate possesion. They defended superbly and we couldn't find a way through, we really really missed Harry and even Emerton  running at players and crossing in from wide areas.

italy were the better team with 11 on the field.

to lose a game in a world cup like this with a chance our country may never get again is way we should feel cheated

Where Italy were great with 11 men was 3 areas.

1. Defending: In the first half we never really had a chance, except for that shot from Chip.

2. Just in front of our defense: The amount of times they put it into that slot was incredible.

3. Through balls over the top: Some great chips and I was surprised to be 0-0 at half time.

I thought we controlled the 2nd half BUT every time they went forward I was concerned.

I actually thought that the better team did win in the end even though I was going for the Socceroos. The whole penalty thing in the end will cover up some major issues for us:
1. Italy were a much better side than us will 11 against 11. The reality is that we were never really going to win against them but were more trying to pinch the result rather than win it on our own merits.
2. Although we had a heap of possession, we did very little with it and created few real chances in the game! Most of the better chances went to Italy and infact, even with 10 men, Italy still managed to create the better chances and should have scored!
3. The red card to the italian player should have been a yellow card and was an incorrect decision.
4. Once we had the advantage, we did nothing to press the advantage. We had the extra player and barely created a scoring chance with players continuosly looking to dribble past 3 players before getting a cross in.
5. Guus should have immediately thrown in Aloisi to press our advantage rather than persisting with a lone striker which hadn't worked until then. He waited far too long to make any changes and as a result, the Italian defence was allowed to settle down and create a brick wall. He should have even thrown in Kennedy as whenever he has been on, something has always happened!

The Italians always looked more dangerous going forward. Luca Toni was able to get in behind the Australian defence repeatedly and create panic, and even after the send off, Italy was dangerous on the break.

Australia really missed Kewell especially and Emerton. It might've been a more dangerous set up if Aloisi and Kennedy had been brought on earlier, but hell, I'm not the one getting paid millions to coach! ;)

But it has been a great tournament for Australia and really given them recognition in the world game. Let's hope the right decisions continue to be made for the future and the advancement continues. :thumbsu:

Dominated is way too strong. They had a couple of clear goal scoring opportunities but its hardly like Australia was stuck in their own half nor could get the ball of them.

It was the one area of defence we were really exposed in, their strikers were great at making the runs behind the defence and midfielders played quality balls over to them, a number of times Toni received the ball over the top well clear of the defender.

Yep. Italy deserved it. We were very lucky to not have a score against us in the first half. I still cannot believe that (a) sometimes they outnumbered us forward with men free wide and (b) they didn't score from these opportunities. It was pretty poor and I expected better from them (Italy)

Why wasn't Jesus put on? He's always brings about goals when on the field.

I actually got scared when they went a man down. I was certain that Australia would get overly confident and they would score against us.

Again, I didn't rate Viduka's game. He just doesn't know how to control it, or feed it off very well to teammates. But he gave it a go and thats all you can ask from the team.

I don't think the run from here on would be that easy. I personally, was expecting us to somehow beat Italy only to lose to Ukr/Sw (we now know its Ukr). I'm not too disappointed with the game. I personally don't like winning through luck (ie. penalty shootouts)

Thought the better team one. They let us have the ball safe in the knowledge that their defence would be outstanding. Zambrotta, Gattuso and Cannavaro were superb.

Even if we had gotten through them Buffon looked switched on. That interception he made at Viduka's feet was amazing. The low cross came in and Buffon was across the gap so quickly ... he reacted, covered ground and dived before Viduka could even get his feet set.

Rubbish way to lose, but in the wash-up was about right as a result.

On balance, Italy were probably the better team - created better chances, and once down to 10, defended brilliantly.

I can only imagine that Guus was expecting the game to go into extra time and was planning on making his remaining changes in the 30 min period to take advantage of fresh legs against 10 men who had no more subs left, but of course he never got that chance.

Italy were better, however we didnt deserve to lose it in normal time, we dominated possesion in 2nd half, not creating much as their backs were incredible, would have been nice to have seen a winner in extra time i thought we played well enough to deserve to get at least that far and not get scored on with the last kick of the match.

Well done to the Italians, every chance they may be crying come semi-final time, their game wont hold up for the duration, quality players it baffles me how they play such negative football i think in the end it will come back to haunt them.

Would have been great to have another crack at their 10 men during extra time, absolutely shattered.

The better team won no doubt. The Italians opened us up with ease and with a little more luck probably could have been a couple of goals up at the half. We came back into the game courtesy of another dodgy red card.

Unfortunately we have too many guys whose skill level is not good enough. Apart from bresciano the other aussies struggle to provide decent balls into the box. conversly guys like Pirlo , Zambrotta, Del Piero were landing balls wherever they wanted them.

As a milan fan i usually hate cannavaro but the little **** fights above his weight division every game and he was unpassable last night. If Nesta gets healthy i reckon Italy will go all the way.

Thought the Italians were the better team in the first half with only Schwarzer keeping the score 0-0 at the half.

The Italians were stiff to get the red card and then had to re-arrange to defend. Defended brilliantly and came up with a lucky penalty.

Deserved the win, but mabye not in that fashion.

Well done Italy.

Fantastic work Australia. Played with pride and conviction all competition.

Very proud of our boys. They showed they have the true Australian sporting spirit.

They belonged on the World Stage and graced it to perfection.

Kudos.

Italy are overrated, clearly not good enough.

Italy didn't deserve it, bunch of ********s.

Australia didn't lose and Italy didn't beat us, a fuken stupid ref cost us the match. In any other country he'd be dead.

The best team categorically didn't win. They created a few first half chances.Even then we were pretty much on top of things in midfield. In the second half, we completely dominated, but once again, no finishing. The horsesh*t penalty capped off what was a pretty standard game that involves Italy. The better team didn't win.The less sporting and more experienced at world cups team won.
