Did you play footy with a VFL/AFL player?

Played with Nic Suban and played against WHE and Majak. Never thought that Majak would have the temperament for AFL footy

Mav Weller, Mitch Robinson, Aaron Hall, Sam Lonergan, Jeremy Howe, Josh Green, Ryan Harwood and more I'm probably forgetting.

Guess Tassie is a small place after all.

Well he's just a bit of a douche generally, he got expelled from like two schools, thought he was the king of perth because he was good at footy (which he was, but he acted like it) and in juniors he would only pass to the kids he thought were "good enough" and he'd ignore open players if he didnt think them worthy of the possession.
Can confirm this statement...

Stephen Lawrence (Hawthorn), Gavin Crosisca (C'wood), Stephen (Melbourne) and David (Brisbane Bears) Wearne in school / club football for Mt Gravatt. Made my clangers look effective if I just kicked it in their general direction.

Rudy Frigo - played a handful of games for Brisbane just didn’t quite have the AFL career hoped. As a Junior my Coach was the galloping gasometer Mick Nolan and I think he enticed him to come over from Aspley to play with Mayne as his son Rick Nolan was in the team and they were maybe school mates. Both great junior players. Rudy dominated at Junior level and opposition coaches knew he was being scouted and would have a field day if he ever fluffed a kick calling all sorts of crap out. Me – as a nobody in the team could tell he was under a lot of pressure to perform. He was often out of our side playing for the colts but he was pretty special when he played. As for stories, well after a night out and we were crashing at a place the dog took a liking to his leg and went humping away. Rudy laughed and shook his leg in rhythm with the dog but unfortunately this got the dog excited and Rudy copped a um spray on his Jeans. Classic !

I went to school with him, he was a few years ahead of me. Great athlete. Probably would have been redrafted the year he wrecked his knee in the State game.

Don't know if you read the Joe The Goose thread the other week, but in it I mentioned the following

The very first goal I ever kicked in junior club footy was a Joe the goose

It was Steve who handpassed it over the top to me, even though he was only 15 metres out and could have kicked the easy goal himself....

Played on Callum Ah Chee and Jarrod Pickett, not high points in my career must admit, also played against Schoenfeld the ranga from GCS (very nice bloke), also played a few pre season scratchies with Nick Kommer from ESS and Jackson Ramsay from COLL, Kommer was a very very off centre bloke

I had to mind the forward pockets/resting rovers so I played briefly (meaning portions of a quarter) on Chris Mainwaring in inter-school sports in primary school. He was two school years younger than me and probably playing up a year, but I'd heard about him through results in other junior football competitions - all I can remember about him now is his hair. Thankfully we were the better school, so the ball never came towards us, but I was always a nervous/anxious defender when it came to having to prepare for the possibility of the contests and even when the ball was up in our forward line, I would diligently remember the phrase "stick to your man" and follow my opponent around whenever he stepped left or right - which was a bit annoying.

Our school was more dominant with West Coast/Collingwood Murray Wrensted in the centre being one of the stars.

Later in high school I played against a team that was made up of boarders from the remote rural areas of WA without a High School and that team included a Sydney Swans ruckman from the early 90's. I won't mention his name, but his team mates would refer to him as "pumpkin" - because, as it was explained to me later, it was how his genitals looked. (Probably too much info)

Played against Jarrad McVeigh a tonne of times in junior footy. Their team was our arch-nemesis and kept us out of the GF three years running. They were the only team in the comp that had really good structures and planned moves around stoppages and most of that was due to McVeigh organising them all and making sure they were pulling their weight. He was a hard nut too (which will surprise a few on the Swans board) and one of my mates used to joke that his only downside was only having two gears: flat-out and freaking insane!
So this was the origin of his pointing abilities!!!

I played against Scott Stevens (former Adelaide battler) sporadically in a small town WA league. The thing that always amazed me was he was literally 100 times better than anyone else in our age group, he would dominate games like the old cliche mark the ball in the centre, kick it forward, get his own ball and kick a goal. Even being in the opposition we would sometimes just stop and be like oh **** nothing we can do ...

But when he made it to the AFL he was always described as a battler, trying to get a spot, 'not overly talented' but hard working. It always made me wonder if he was ' not overly talented' what the hell were talented players like Franklin like as juniors

Played with Chad Fletcher, Jason Saddington, Nic Fosdike, Tim Schmidt, Nick Davis, Troy Luff in their post AFL careers for a season or two.

Played against Lenny Hayes, Nick Davis and Mark McVeigh in junior footy, they were all man-childs running riot through puny kids like me.

Was he from Mullewa?

Played against Glen Waverley Rovers back in the day. They had this ranga kid, Leppitsch in the forward line. Hard to stop.

You sound the same age as me (born in 75), and from the same area...

He didn't play for the Rovers, he played for Springvale (VFA club) Juniors. I got injured the week before we played them and he, along with his team, towelled us up with about 40 touches, 4 goals and 3-4 cut lunches. Everyone at the ground watching the game knew he'd play AFL one day (he played with Hawthorn's Under 19's the day before). If I wasn't injured I would have played against him.

Simon Garlick actually played for the Rovers and I played U14 rep footy with him for the WJFA (Waverley Junior Football Association) in the late 80's. We made the Grand Final but lost to the Footscray Junior Footy League. Nice bloke but I didn't think he'd make it back then TBH as there wasn't much of him, he made a decent playing career for himself though.

Played against Rupert Betharas when he was at East Malvern in under 11s in the mid 80s. He was a gun but a bit of a hog, but he was surrounded by yuppie spuds.

Also played under Alan Richardson when he was playing/assistant coach at East Burwood, a really great bloke and I'm glad to see him go well at the Saints, hopefully not too well this week though :)
