A shit week for Oakleigh District all round with a major vandalisation of their electricals leaving them without lights for at least a week or so. Seems a deliberate job apparently and very strange. Not sure if the club has enemies but looks a targeted attack in the leadup to a major off field day for the club which they were to play under lights.

That's horrible news. Who were they meant to be playing under lights?

I heard they have problems game days with neighbours because of parking now the council has decided no one is allowed to park on the grass anymore around the ground.

The Division is really starting to separate now. Looks down to 6 team for finals, but in all honesty the 5th ranked team is looking a little weak this season.

Donvale 6-0 - Just keep winning. They seem to win every week by 5-6 goals. Players still to come back and the team to beat. With games coming against UFTG, Silvan and Fairpark before the halfway point of the season its impossible to see them not being on top of the ladder with a 9-0 record.

Surrey Park 5-1 - What a start to the year! Their only loss coming against Donvale by 5 points. They aren't just winning, they are starting to annihilate teams. Games to come against Fairpark, Oakleigh and UFTG. Hard to see them losing any of them. There is a suggestion from some they might struggle more on the smaller grounds when it gets a bit heavy and their running games slows down but I'm not buying that at this point. Kane Hendon dominating and the clear challenger.

Coldstream 4-2 - Going well at 4-2. Maybe have dropped off slightly but still only have lost to Donvale (32 points) and Surrey (22 points). Games to come against FTG, Fairpark and Silvan so should be banking the wins in those games you would think if they are a serious challenger. Setting up their season well and are a lock for finals, I still think finishing top 3.

Knox 4-2 - Having a great year and probably the youngest team in the division. Are taking care of the sides below them well and just falling short a little against the teams above them. Still haven't played Oakleigh, FTG and Warrandyte. Harry Greaves is having a great year up forward. I think they are finishing 3rd or 4th. It will be interesting to see how they go if the grounds get heavy also, they love to run and carry and move the ball around.

UFTG 3-3 - Huge win against Oakleigh just when it looked like their season was starting to falter and now find themselves in 5th spot. A mixed bag of games to come against Donvale, Warrandyte and Surrey Park. I still don't see them playing finals but with Oakleigh being so inconsistent its possible. They have at least put a good amount of breathing space between them and bottom spot. I think they finish 5-7 but must beat Warrandyte in 2 weeks or they will find themselves in a relegation battle again.

Oakleigh Districts 3-3 - A horrible loss to UFTG on the weekend just when it looked like they were about to consolidate themselves in the top 5. Still haven't played Knox, Surrey or FTG. On form you cant see them beating Knox or Surrey but who knows with them. I think they should be playing finals after seeing them round 1 but cant trust them, they only beat Warrandyte by 10 points and Fairpark by 4 points. Finishing somewhere between 5th -7th.

FTG 2-4 - Had a badly needed win on the weekend, amazingly only their 2nd for the year. A shadow of the grand final team from last year its hard to see them improving much. They have only defeated Silvan by 1 point and Fairpark by 39 points. Have Coldstream, Knox and Oakleigh to come and on form its hard to see them winning any. Have some players to come back but seem to lose more to injury every week. I think they finish 6th - 10th.

Silvan 2-4 - Massive loss on the scoreboard and apparently in playing personnel on the weekend. Now clearly have the worst % in the division which is going to be important come the pointy end of the season. They are one team that can really get opened up if things don't go their way during a game with 74, 78 and 149 point losses coming so far in 6 games. Huge game against Warrandyte this week coming with Donvale and Coldstream to follow. In trouble i think and will finish 8-10.

Fairpark 1-5 - A really poor loss to FTG on the weekend. Have been competitive in most games but have a horror draw now with Surrey, Coldstream and Donvale to come. Have a better % then most around them currently but it might be quickly destoyed in the next 3 games. Struggling to kick a score and injury depleted. Might be on the bottom after next week. No chance of finals and probably equal favourite to be relegated. I think they finish 8th - 10th.

Warrandyte 1-5 - predicted by many to go winless. They still sit on the bottom but it feels like there could be some green shoots coming through. They have Silvan, UFTG and Knox to come so its not a horrible draw. I give them a massive chance this week against Silvan and a good chance against UFTG. I genuinely feel right now Silvan and Fairpark are more likley to get relegated than Warrandyte BUT i have heard they may be losing a number of players to an overseas trip in the 2nd half of the year. 8th - 10th.
Pretty good summary 😊

Hard to argue with any of this.

Which are the grounds that people think Surrey might struggle on? I know Silvan, but I've never been to the others that we're yet to visit - Fairpark, OD, FTG and Upper

Fairpark isn't tiny but definitely on the smaller side. Can be a quirky ground to play. FTG is large but gets very wet and muddy as the year goes on. Oakleigh is a good size can be very windy as there is not much protection.

Im unsure if Upper still becomes a bog heap?

My view of Third div so far this year.
Donvale don’t have to be Einstein to have them as faves. D is for depth feeding in a couple of youngsters and still winning.
Surrey Park plenty of depth too and have won games without Kenworthy. Have played a lot together so are pretty tight.
Coldstream strong top end players but no depth. Quality ball users and a top forward.
Knox played the best 1/4 I have seen against us. Played a higher grade for ordinary results but still think this will serve them well.
Upper Gully decent even team with Bailey and Cowan standouts. Will depend on Bailey getting back.
Oakleigh Districts rely on coach Pearson. Look to have had a few out against us on the weekend.
Ferntree Gully my club. Injuries departures and travel have been issues but still pretty competitive. Look to improve in the second round.
Silvan off season losses of a couple of good players hurt. Not much depth but hard to beat at home.
Warrandyte hard to read as playing a lot of young blokes. Fallen away a bit depth wise.
Fair Park hard to read and have been very competitive after losing Hird and Rankin.
Think it’s Donvale and probably Surrey in the GF. Relegation is tough as 3or 4 at the bottom end in contention.
These are my observations please be gentle with any criticism 😊

Would have been earlier but some clubs that nick kids from the unders & claim them as their own struggle to return them despite the players wishes.

Careful, that’s the famous Vermont “junior program” you’re talking about.

Interesting though, AFL Vic just dropped their U18 and U16 metro squads and there’s not a mention of Vermont. Plenty of other EFNL clubs. Good to see these things now published and the clubs mentioned, publicly pours water on the old “come to Vermont where you’ll succeed” bullshit.

Sorry to continue the hijack of the Div 3 thread to discuss the eagles however they are beginning to show signs of struggle and cracking in the lower to mid junior age groups. They’re still dominant in the 15s and (I think) strong in 16s and 17s however below that they are not so great and we’re calling for players in April - a first in all the years I have been involved in the east as a player and now parent.

They now look to bring them in at Under 15 level.

Three seasons of juniors and they’re a “home” Vermont player and a one pointer.

Unbelievable…

Simple tweak of the rules required, if you qualify for multiple home clubs then only the first one counts (unless it has folded etc).

I would also be ok with whichever one you played the most games for.
Otherwise someone like Trent Georgiou (Mooroolbark) would have been considered a Kilsyth player despite playing 4-5 years of juniors at Mooroolbark.
Or Matt Jones from Sth Croydon would have been considered a Mooroolbark junior.

They're not the only Prem Div club in the area that does a good job of it in U14/U15 age groups

I was waiting for the Surrey V Donvale rematch before doing another div 3 review. The top of the ladder is more settled but the middle and bottom part of the ladder are probably more uncertain than a month ago.

Donvale (11-0) - The clear number 1 seed and enhanced it by demolishing Surrey park on the weekend. Matt Day returned with 7 goals but had plenty of mates hitting the scoreboard also. Day x 2, Murphy, Duncan and we know Otten could go forward if needed also. How do you cover that quality? Their midfield has been led brilliantly again by James Rausa. According to Harry Cheezels there is still a fair few to come back, whether they can fit them all in or even need them all is another story. I cant see them losing a game. Predicted 1st

Surrey Park (9-2)
- had their first really disappointing day on the weekend against Donvale where many people were tipping them to win. Kane Hendon their midfield leader has been out for a few weeks along with Tadan Vitacca, and defender Jack McLaren looks to have done a serious leg injury on the weekend. Tom Smith has been enormous for Surrey this year so hopefully his facial injury wont stop him playing any games. Overall the season for Surrey has been a huge success and they are 3 games clear of the 4th spot team in Knox so are a lock for top 3. The only player who has been a bit quiet for me from last year is Nick Kann who hasnt kicked a goal in 5 weeks (might be playing a different role?) after kicking 56 last year. Predicted 2-3

Coldstream (9-2) -
have probably snuck under the radar a bit to be honest. They have only lost to Donavle and Surrey Park but have also had some close games against Silvan and Fairpark in recent weeks. Darcy Fritsch has been huge up forward and Brock Castree has had the ball more than any other player in the division. Had a lot of injuries in the first half of the year but starting to get a few back now. Now 3 games clear of 4th spot Knox who they defeated away on the weekend without Bayliss or Conyers. Things would have to go seriously pear shaped for them not to finish top 3. Predicted 2-3

Knox (6-5) -
Some had them as the team who could potentially break into that top 3 in the 2nd half of the year but they are probably too far back now. Can really mix their form which isnt completely surprising as they look quite young. Would have been right on Coldstreams tail if the result had of went their way on the weekend. Have attempted to strengthen their squad with some mid season recruits in former Rowville player Ben Kernick and James Fisher from Vermont with both these players having Prem Div senior experience. They can be ultra dangerous on their day and although are only a game clear from UFTG and Oakleigh i think they are much better than the teams below them. Predicted 4th

UFTG (5-6)
- Been a positive campaign for the club after some very lean years. Many predicted them to be relegated again and they have done more than avoid relegation and instead are in the mix for a finals berth. Russ Cowan has been huge for them as has Travis Strange. They have also found one in former Rowville junior Jack Gaal, who has been impressive since coming into the 1s from the 19s. The only disapointment was the unusual mid-season departure of the Cawsey brothers, Dylan and Jake who are now playing at Emerald. A disapointing loss on the weekend to FTG leaves them a little vunerable for finals but their destiny is in their own hands. Predicted 6th

Oakleigh (5-6) -
Havent been in very good form at all. Since round 4 have only won 2 games, last weekend against Warrandyte by 12 points and round 7 against Knox by 2 points, the week after Knox made headlines for all the wrong reasons. One shining light is Mark Stevens who has kicked 41 goals for the year so far. A month ago i thought they were almost a lock for 5th spot but they dont look likely now. Blake Pearson hasnt been in the same form this year compared to what we know he can do. They have Fairpark this week and they must win to keep their finals hopes alive. Predicted 7th

FTG (4-7) -
Have found a little bit of form. Had a great win over UFTG on the weekend and its keeps their finals hopes alive. They have done a bit of mid year recruiting getting Jordyn Flannery (brother of captain Jack), who has made an instant impact up forward kicking 10 goals in the last 4 games and Paddy Turner transferred last week from Burleigh AFL Queensland where he has kicked 35 gaols in 10 games this year. Lachie Kennedy also played his first game back from injury on the weekend. It hasnt been the year FTG hoped for but with mulitple departure in the off season they have been able to get good senior time into some young players. With Oakleigh and UFTG faltering, i think they can make a real good run at 5th spot. Predicted 5th

Fairpark (2-9) -
They havent been completely horrible but have spent most of the year on the bottom of the ladder. Finally had that breakthrough second win on the weekend against Silvan but it was far from convincing. What they do have is a much better percentage than the 2 teams below them in Warrandyte and Silvan. Their backline has been strong all year, they have the 5th best defence but they lack scoring power. Jay Rankin has barely played all year and looks to be injured again on the weekend. Kyle Hird, who i always think is their barometer, hasnt played much either but was best on ground on the weekend. Captain Mitch Nied and young mid Mason Byrne have been excellent. Have Oakleigh at home this week and Warrandyte away next week, must win at least 1 of them or its big trouble. Predicted 8th

Warrandyte (2-9) -
Have been more competitive than most expected. Could have won against Oakleigh on the weekend but werent competitive against Surrey Park the week before. Zak Carroll has led from the front all year. They play Fairpark in 2 weeks and Silvan in round 16, for me they are the only games i can see them winning. But they can pull out the odd good performance especially at home. With their poor percentage they may need to win 5 games to avoid relegation. Predicted 9 -10

Silvan (2-9) -
Had their chance against Fairpark on the weekend but couldnt take it. Again are a team who often swaps between getting smashed and being competitive. Their last 9 games have been incredible to look at, 3 losses by under 1 goal & 1 loss by 10 points, 4 thrashings and 1 win.

5 point loss
69 point loss
4 point loss
96 point loss
10 point loss
149 point loss
9 point win
78 point loss
1 point loss

Injuries have hit Silvan with James Charge and Trent Martin both barely playing and it looks like Josh Fisher has done a serious knee injury on the weekend. Michael Fowkes and Matt Low have both been excellent all year kicking 23 goals each. Their percentage is very poor and they average over 102 points against per game. Usually that kind of profile would mean they would be relegated but they actually look more likley to win games right now than Warrandyte or Fairpark. They have a good chance against FTG at home this week but if their trend continues this is the week they should get pumped. Predicted 9-10

Pretty spot on review I thought Surrey would be able to challenge Donvale but the Vale’s just keep adding talent. Of the others maybe Coldy on their day but no one else really 😊

From what ive heard from Donvale and the players they had out were:
Nathan Mill (CHB. T.O.T.Y and Bnf Winner)
Mihaele Zalac ( Inside Mid- 2023 Premiership Player)
Harry Ablett ( Backman. 2023 Premiership Player)
Ben Lyall (BnF Winner)
Dylan Sinosich (Inside Mid, 2023 Premiership player. I think only 1 reserves game this year.)
Charlie Kent ( Recovering from ACL. )

Maybe they cant squeeze them all back in But after watching the game from the weekend i cant see anyone beating them.
Not only does opposition have to cover their 4 talls. Giles and Haig can go forward. Otten Can go forward. M Day and Djordevic can play on ball. Rausa Can go back. Far Too many weapons on every line. And i also think they have the best coach by a fair way. Collins has success everywhere he goes. Its a shame They werent promoted because they wouldve held their own in Div 2

Agree that Donvale will be very hard to beat. They were very impressive on Saturday.

That said, Surrey had no bench after Qtr time and played the last quarter with 16
