Do essendon deserve the number 1 draft pick?

They obviously don't deserve it but the problem is, if they didn't get pick 1, what pick would you give them? If we're trying to be fair here.

Some might say end of first round, but really if they hadn't had players banned there's every chance they would have finished bottom 4 anyway, a la 2015.

They'll get pick 1. The AFL has indicated it wants Essendon to be strong again.

It's not a good look but it's what we've come to expect.

I genuinely don't think opposition supporters get just how big the removal from finals was in 2013. Not only that it happened, but the manner in which it did. Finals are what it's all about in footy and everybody (regardless of which team you support) knows it.

To let Bombers supporters buy their memberships and lead all concerned down the garden path, only to remove the collective goal at the last second, despite knowing for months this would happen, was a ****ing campaigner's trick by the league. Regardless of what the club was perceived to have done, nobody here can justify why the Essendon supporters deserved to be treated like that. At least the Storm supporters back in 2010 knew the deal and weren't treated like a mere cash cow by the league.

And I've just said all that basically from a supporter's perspective. To let the players risk injury every week for nothing must have left them feeling absolutely gutted. They effectively lost a year of their careers right there, yet everyone is trying to say it was merely for governance (a club issue, remember?)...how is this aspect of the punishment the players' fault? You can't have it both ways.

As I said, this part of the punishment for the entire club was massive, so to see Adelaide supporters almost brush over this aspect like it was nothing and merely compare the draft sanctions...yeah, nah.

I think you should be holding the club more accountable for a lot of this, rather than placing the blame at the feet of the league.

Para 1/2: you need to take that up with the club - you seriously can't believe you deserved to play finals with that cloud hanging over the players

Para 3: it's the players fault because they agreed to take the supplements

Essendon supporters have continued to buy memberships and support the club so I really don't think it's a factor in how you think others should be feeling about poor old Essendon

It's off topic - so apologies

Still don't deserve a low draft pick

And I don't think Essendon supporters get how big systematic team wide doping is. Mate it's deregistration stuff. The fact that Essendon has a team running around this year is a sad indictment on the integrity, if I may even use that word, of the AFL.

Yeah I like this, helps Brisbane, gives EFC a little whack.
Its stupid though. Brisbane's issue isn't that they've had no high draft picks. Their facilities are from the dark ages, their coaches are abysmal and their board is toxic. Giving Brisbane picks like that only means those player's development is stunted until they go back to their home state.

According to who? You?

Let’s stick to facts and leave talk of deregistration to discussions about Leigh Matthews.

I agree it doesn't really help, it's more symbolic. Brisbane get some hope (but nothing that really helps give them a leg up) and Essendon don't get #1 for their past mistakes (but they still get a very good draft pick). Current AFL admin has zero idea about public perception though.

Yeah, we've had some high picks. They all left. Admittedly that is largely our own fault. We've had 19 players re-sign this year alone. Last year, Aish was the only one we lost that we had wanted to keep. Our retention has improved significantly.

Our facilities however remain a huge problem.

No.

My position was that Essendon should have been assumed to finish no lower than last year. In other words, that the first pick they could get would be at pick 4. If they had finished higher than last year's 15th, then the ladder position would be used as normal. As it is they go up the draft order, in effect rewarded for ethically the biggest breach in Australian sporting history.

Not much difference for Essendon this time, but it would be a rule which could be applied should another team find themselves with mass bans for whatever reason - drugs, match fixing, salary cap cheating, the list theoretically could go on.

They do deserve it, mainly due to last year. They were pretty terrible with a full list anyway, so it's not like they have gone from top 4 to last and their poor performance is purely related to the systematic doping sanctions, as evidenced last year.

So you're willing to compromise the draft for symbolism? Thank **** you're not in charge then.

Should Freo not get a decent draft pick because they'll have good players returning next season?

You signed players like Lewis Taylor by giving them way overs. He's earning double what he's worth, of course he's going to agree to stay.
