I used to hate having 7-8 and now 9 home games in Geelong but now I really think we have the best set up in the league. The travel of a Victorian club with the home ground advantage of an interstate side.

I don’t think it can be denied by even the most one-eyed fan that this predicament helps us tremendously during the home and away season but obviously we are at a disadvantage in finals when we are hosting teams at their own ground or giving interstate sides a neutral venue they haven’t earned the right to have.

That said we do deserve to play wherever we want to play although to get that how about the club use some initiative and put their hands up to play more games in Tassie, NT and Canberra against sides that sell their games interstate and maybe we might actually get that wish of 11 home games during the season.

Yes they’ve made than very clear by making us host opponents at their own home ground.

they very much showed their pro Geelong bias by ‘allowing’ us to host Richmond at Richmonds home ground in front of now crowd this weekend because of ‘advertising’ hahahahaha

I am not even talking about this week.

I thought it was already obvious.

What is happening this week?

As part of the AFL’s grand plan to make a middle tier side who neither make nor cost the league much money the winners of this years competition, they’re starting by denying our request to host a home game on our home ground so we can play it in front of no one at the opposition’s home ground.

because I know if I wanted to make Geelong win the competition the first thing I’d do is ensure they are the only team who don’t play their home games on their home ground when it is available

Exactly, they are creating a illusion to hide the obvious

My only gripe is that after 5 stages of redevelopment the capacity is still only 40K. Would be awesome if the capacity was 55K or so

As much as I agree, the "commercial argument" for a ground that size might be a little weak.

Assuming at 50K, you would get at least one of the "Big 4" down the highway every year, and that would be enough to guarantee at least one real home final every year. Spending the extra tens? / hundreds? of millions to push up the capacity that much might not have been justified, no matter how much the club wants it.

(Maybe the T20 or BBL games might benefit as well? Not sure on the recent crowds to those games at GMHBA.)

That said, 40,000 is only 2K less than Gabba capacity (according to a Google search) and Brisbane is a much larger city. So you'd think 40K is ample for Geelong.

Sadly as this thread shows, it's probably still not going to be big enough for the AFL, "because of the fans".

Can GMHBA have a crowd atm? I assume no due to the lockdown.

Why can't RFC trade a home game for a future home game?

Sorry, I wasn't referring to this week or even this season.

More around whether the final capacity of the ground - whenever it happens - warrants more games at the ground or not.

Like the way you got Selwood?

Are you serious? There's plenty to like about what Richmond have done but you've got to concede they've had access to picks that Geelong has not by simple fact that Geelong hasn't really bottomed out. Deledio, Tambling, Cotchin, Martin, and Conca were all taken higher than any pick Geelong has had this century.

Geelong bottomed out in 2003. They're different from other clubs in being able to sustain a position near the top once they got there.

'lot of father sons, lot of regional networking, lot of intervention in trades to get various trades with support from the expansion clubs.

Different ways to manipulate the market

lol wut

yeah I mean the way that expansion club helped us out by signing the best player of the century when he was at his peak for us was just another way we manipulated the system. It’s ok we didn’t want Ablett anyway

I think the fact the expansion clubs entered the league in terms of timing helped you get Tuohy and Henderson from Carlton like Hawks took advantage of FA with McEvoy and Lake and so forth.

Geelong and Hawks were both up at the time, while other clubs lower/mid range

Its harder for clubs to repeat what Hawks and Geelong have done. Lucky Rohan was so poor at Sydney to and Dangerfield was a steal value wise and can't anticipate that scenario going forward to often

From memory only two RFA have been traded because their clubs wanted to keep them. We didn’t get our full forward for free from a expansion club, we paid 3 first round picks.
