Do the Hawks have the best forward line ever?

Hawthorn and Geelong average the same amount of goals and almost the same amount of points per game this season.

Hardly the best ever but probably the most proficient this year but Essendon aren't far behind either.
Hawthorn and Geelong are close but Essendon are over 2 goals a game behind.

It's probably marginally ahead of the eagles forward line

How so? Let's compare the two teams forward lines shall we.

Franklin > Kennedy
Roughead > Darling
Breust > J.Hill
Puopolo > Hams
Rioli < LeCras
Gunston > Embley

LeCras is better then Rioli, but that's about it though.

5-1 Hawthorns way. ;)

North in 1993:

Longmire 75.29 in 20 games; best bag was 9 (did his knee early in the last game of the H&A season)
McAdam - 68.43 in 17 games; best bag was 10
Carey - 64.44 in 19 games; best bag was 7 (including two when he did his hammy in the 1st half)
Roberts - 47.14 in 21 games; best bag was 5

That's 254.128 in an average of 19.25 games... @ 13.2 goals a game (and 6.6 points) = 85.8 points a game from only four players.

Allison also kicked 21 in 21.16 games, and Glenn Archer kicked a bag of 5 at the WACA.

Fair to say a handy forward line.

My favourite forward line of all time:

FF: empty
HF: Wayne Carey
C, HB, FB, Foll: 17 other players getting the hell out of the ducks space!

Although the dees had a good one going in 2000 with Neitz, Schwartz, Farmer, Robertson and a young Brad Green and Cam Bruce. It didn't ever quite come together or stay together but it was good at times.

Also on the current Hawthorn team call me skeptical but I can't quite see them fitting in Bailey, Hale, Roughead, Franklin, Gunston and Bruest, Rioli. Either one of the rucks makes way or Gunston does. Now if they come up against Sydney with a firing Mumford and Pyke the temptation will be to play 2 big rucks which may well see Gunston out of the side. I'm not convinced by Gunston as an up the ground player. He does his best work inside the 50 and if push comes to shove I might fancy the back up ruck, Roughy or Buddy from the square with the smalls and others capable of going into the midfield mix like Lewis.

Oh and we shouldn't discount this lot:
FF: McGlynn Tippett Pyke
HF: Jetta Reid Goodes

Sydney might also decide to go small and not play 2 big rucks and Tippett (and/or Reid) but this forward line scares me. You need 2 very big defenders to take on Tippett and Pyke. You then need at least a rangy and clever defender to stop Reid. Another quality player who has height but can also play tall is needed for Goodes and then you need a decent defender to pay McGlynn respect and a speed machine to go with Jetta.

Is it good enough to win this years flag? Can they win the flag without Franklin?

Since that reply from TAITA on our board, you have really had it in for Buddy.

Whether or not he goes to the franchise next year, Buddy will do anything he can to help us win the flag this year.

Hams and Embley lol. Shuey/Masten and Cox should replace them.

Ever...no. I would have though Geelong of the mid to late 80's with Lindner, Ablett, Turner, Stoneham and Brownless would have been one of the greatest ever....and unpredictable.
