I cant see us winning more than two games, so on that rather win 4 and have a draw and pick up a priority pick please.

PP for me. Some great talent available early in this years draft, would love to have the shot at an extra potential star than another win or two.

Another thing is if we get a PP, Melbourne will be forced to choose between Scully and Butcher. Either way, we would be laughing. Do they take Butcher becuase he is the only standout forward or do they take Scully ensuring they have a potential topline ball winner.

If we win 5 or 6 games, They will take both and we will end up getting one of Lucas, Morabito and Stevens. Players we would have already had a shot at picking up.

Add one of Scully/Butcher & Lucas/Morabito + Jetta to our list and we will be laughing.

Imagine the future forward line of Butcher Kennedy Notte Jetta Lecras McKinley and the future starting midfield of Natinui Swift Masten Lucas Ebert Schuey...all class.

Were getting Butcher, Jetta and Lucas?

I carefully thought about this.

I want us to play the young guys (Scott Selwoods, Schueys, McGinnitys, Naitanui in patches) if it'll benefit their development. I agree with Bunsen on the pretensis that the "dead wood" shouldn't hinder our future star's development.

That said, I want us to win every game WITH the young players. No point bringing in Fletcher if a younger player is playing a comparable brand of football.

EXAMPLE.
Chad Fletcher racks up 35 disposal, 4 tackles and a goal in the WAFL.
Luke Schuey racks up 26 disposals and ran all day in the WAFL.

KS, I think most are of the opinion that we couldn't win more than a couple of games this season anyway. Not that we are going to try and lose on purpose.

If we could win eight games, I would take that. That would be five from the next 12 and a pretty reasonable effort. (Especially when you have a look at our draw.)

However if we could only manage two wins from the next 12 games, I would rather it be one and get the PP.

Isnt the priority pick at the start of the 2nd round??

So if we won under 5 games and say finished 15th we would get....

2 (for finishing 15th)
18 (PP)
20 (2nd selection in 2nd round)

Pretty sure the only way we would get a 2nd pick within the first round is if you win a total of 7 games only over 2 years or something?

It is eight wins or less in two years gets you a PP at the start of the first round Cuzz. If we only win four games this year we would qualify. Hence the discussion.;)

Ah yes I read it another thread :p Couldn;t find it in this thread thats all.

Well in that case - 1 more win for the win :thumbsu:

Hopefully our 1 win comes in round 18 when Im in Melbourne for WCE v Ess :thumbsu:

But seriously when they run out you want them to win every game - its just when they start to get to that stage where they are like 30-40 points down and its like "oh well.... play the kids, go for the PP":thumbsu:

Got a tough few weeks as well which will be tough but our last 5 or 6 games there are a few very winnable ones.

All we need is the draft pick number 7...

2006 pick #7 = Joel Selwood
2007 pick #7 = Rhys Palmer
2008 pick #7 = Daniel Rich

There's 7 teams with 2 more wins than us so it might be a little difficult. So on that note, package Glass and Cox for pick 7?

Two priority picks is far too good an opportunity to pass up.

If we were to come 14th and win 5-6 games we would get picks 4 and 22 (perhaps 23 if Richmond don't win 5 games).

If we were to come 15th and win 4 games we would get picks 2,4,20,22

If we don't make finals I want draft picks to suggest otherwise is stupid.

However if you were to say Wooden Spoon or extra picks 2 & 20 I would still swallow my pride and take the extra two picks.

That's if you care about premierships...

No we wouldn't, you qualify for either a 1st round (2+ years of 4.5 wins or less) or 2nd round PP (one year of 4.5 wins or less).

I thought it was 4.5 wins for each of 2 years.

If so we can tie with the dees or something

We play footy to win games. End of story. Its exciting when you get early picks, but I don't think a priority pick is going to be the difference between winning and losing a premiership further down the line. Besides, we haven't seen enough players from this year's draft to know exactly where we're at with development. A midfield of Masten, Ebert, Shuey, Swift, Naitunui and Selwood (all early picks) could be all we need in 5 year's time. Kennedy will be a good player, as will Notte when he adds the bulk to his tremendous promise. We don't need the priority pick and i myself feel premierships are cheapened a bit if they are won by teams who spend years at the bottom in search of picks. (wait until you hear what people have to say when Carlton come up and win one.)

What has this got to do with anything?

1 player can make the difference.

Whether good or bad, an extra top 5 pick is hardly going to be a disadvantage.

How do you feel about Hawthorn's flag? What about our 92 and 94 flags where we were gifted draft picks?

Question for you guys that are happy to take the PP.

Do you refer to Carlton as Carltank?

If you do, will you stop doing so if we do end up with a PP this year?

Mate my hatred for Carlton extends further then there tanking. I rekon you could excuse the tanking considering how they were r*ped for cheating, from a team perspective it didnt allow them to be competetive for a few years. I basically abuse them because they are pig headed and arrogant, not because they dropped a game for a draft pick which ended up netting them Judd. Look at Melbourne I honestly believe they would be able to steal a couple of games and finish with more then 4 wins the way there going but they wont and I will not be calling them tankers because they have integrity.

Never liked the talk of losing games, (not on purpose but nether less), for better picks. I guess as Eagles fans its never been an issue as we are always either top or mid ladder, so we never got the GREAT picks anyway. Though seeing as we have turned a new dirty leaf, getting the early picks are a great consolation.
Take last year. To give back Swift would be nasty. So the team will play and whatever comes comes.
It is a trend that seems to have started as recently as the Carltank era and now the clubs realize if finals aren't going to figure, play the kids, try differing games plans and maybe finish with so few wins the early picks and subsequent gun players come.
Would not be happy short term to win only one more game this year. Come draft time however the PP would be great.

I am of that opinion as well, If we play the kids and they come away with 5-6-7 wins out of the 12 for the rest of the season I would be extatic. Unfortunately I dont think they are that far on in there development for that to happen, and the longer it takes for them to develope the more likely it is our current stars Cox, Glass, Kerr wont be apart of our next premiership. If we need to replace them down the track I would rather it now while we are bottom of the pack then watch them retire in 3-4-5 years when we are finishing 8th+ depleting our talent pool and causing us to be one of those teams that can make it to finals but doesnt have the talent to seriously push for a grand final. Look at the way Collingwood are operating now that they have lost Buckley, Burns ect.. over the past few years, then they have blokes like Roca who used to be good but is fading.

My opinion would be different if we were able to win some of those close games comfterbly this year with the mix of kids and experience.

#2 and #4 draft pick combinations over the years

2001 - Ball, Polak
2002 - Wells, Walsh
2003 - Walker, Ray
2004 - Roughhead, Tambling
2005 - Thomas, J. Kennedy
2006 - Gumbelton, Luenburger
2007 - Cotchin, Morton
2008 - Naita, Hartlett

I wonder if time will show that the 07 draft was more quality than the 06 draft. The 06 draft was talked up as the next 01 draft.
