Thursday night will tell alot. We are getting smashed in the media. Bevo for the first time is under the pump
Let's see what the palyers do. Effort has been questioned. They give it everything bevo still remains. They get pumped and outworked like the 1at 2 games he could be in strife.
I haven't wanted him for the last 4 years

I would like to thank you all in advance for contributing to this thread which is going to make very entertaining reading for us all when Bevo is holding aloft our 5th premiership trophy in 2025. I admire the self-sacrifice.

He’s going to start the season 0-6, then win the last 20 games of the season to lift the flag against surprise grand finalists North Melbourne. Darcy 7 goals to win the Norm.

Get your house on it. Now.

  • For one, put the established players back in their normal positions and stop ******* around with the experimental footy.
  • Put Naughton at CHB to stop the rot, bolster Jones and the ailing Keath
  • Bring Sweet in the ruck, put English at CHF
  • put JJ back off the HB flank playing an overlapping runner
  • Get Daniel out of defense FFS and put him on the forward line

I like your ideas
We need to do something
Well worth a try and after all they’re not set in stone :)

Hiring Bevo was a stroke of good fortune. When he took over, every single Bulldogs supporter would have gladly accepted a premiership and runners up in the following 8 seasons. It's a better record than Ken Hinkley who's had an extra 2 seasons at Port, but no GF appearances... and somehow kept his position

But everyone has an expiry date and it looks like Bevo has lost the players and if that's true then his position is untenable.

Common sense would suggest recruiting a physically strong ruckman, but Beveridge does not like this type of player.
Based on what? In the past few years we've chased Stef Martin (twice) and Soldo

Only if we replace all the assistant coaches and get some new ideas into the club. The current panel are woeful.

Have you forgotten Dunkley in the ruck?
Do you really think he'd be rucking if we snared one of the targets we chased? Did he ruck ahead of Stef when we finally got him?

I've seen more than enough from Bevo disrespecting the ruck position to last a lifetime. Why do you imply that chasing Soldo and getting a washed up Martin to his umpteenth club for some super top up games were decisions made primarily or entirely because of the head coach?

We chased Stef 4 years before he finally got to us.
We've played two rucks more than we've played one when you consider the early days of Roughy/Campbell/Boyd getting games as duos.

I think Bevo got the hates-rucks reputation because he wasn't prepared to play slow lumbering talls. If it was a choice of that or just one ruck he'd rather have a 190cm midfielder (like Dunkley) fill in for a few minutes each match or each quarter.

Sweet's very few senior appearances and the early exit of BTC are probably testimony to this. English by contrast is the ideal ruck. He performs well around the ground and is effectively another midfielder for us.

That makes sense - Ayce certainly got his chances IIRC simply because he was mobile and ran hard.

I think we lack ruck depth but that's another story altogether

I’m not sure a half assed effort at Soldo and Martin across an 8 year period really show that he values the position, there’s been plenty of rucks drafted, traded, plucked from the state leagues in that time and sure maybe a lot of them weren’t fantastic at the time but that’s the thing with rucks you need to cycle through them and we’ve made almost zero effort when it’s been such a big issue for us for a long time.

It’s obviously a list management directive but I dare say it’s coming from the top down, and yeah you can say he likes a certain style of ruck and that’s all well and good but it just so happens that style is unicorn which is very very hard to find - you have to be a little flexible rather than just neglect the position completely

I agree we should rookie more (even every second year), but given we've chased existing rucks and have played two more often than played one, it supports dogwatch's post above.

I think the problem that I have with Bevo is how many of our players have regressed since breaking out or showing a good bit of form. There is no excuse for why players like Bailey Dale and Bailey Williams are shadows of themselves and sometimes aren't even playing the position they had most success in. Caleb Daniel having more CBA than Macrae is a tactical decision that frankly is so mind boggling. Bailey Smith even appears to have fallen off a cliff from the level he was playing at in 2021 and parts of 2022. I know that some of this blame has to lie with the players but if it's a pattern with multiple players it becomes a worrying trend for the coaching staff. If I'm meant to believe that he is some genius player coach than why aren't any of his players seemingly playing for him. At the moment they look like a team trying to get the coach sacked not one that wants to save him.

Just on the ruck issue…why is Sweet still on the list? I like the lad but he is so clearly not the type of ruck that will ever get a game for us. Couldn’t we have at least tried to acquire a ruck that might get suit the type of role we’re after.

I think that’s the point. We did try but failed.

Martin would have been great for a couple of years if we’d got him four years ago but he was past his use by date when he finally arrived here in his mid 30s.

If you’re saying why not look for a 19-20 yo state league ruck well yes there might have been some. We got Sweet that way but he isn’t mobile enough.

It’s hard to know if Sam Power was thinking that way and if he was, whether he opted for other players with his late picks (eg Charlie Parker) or just got overruled.

I still have some faith in Bevo. I think he is still a great coach in the right situation.

I think he has gone off course a fair bit, especially since the GF, and I think a proper review at the end of last season would've ironed a lot of things out and would've put us on the right foot going forward. In the end, it seemed like a half hearted review where everything was ticked off, he got given a way too premature extension and essentially validated everything that has happened recently.

Ideally (for me anyway), things can get back on track and Bevo can still be the man. Unfortunately I think its already too far gone and the end game is inevitable.

Yes I still have faith in Bevo and I don't believe there is anyone better available. The caveat is my expectations for this year are probably lower than most as I do not believe we have a top 4 list this year regardless of game plan, an away final would be a pass for the season.

Bevo's coaching record stacks up well in the modern era, regardless of top 4 (I'd personally give a tick for 2021). That said I would be open to a mid-year independent footy department review including coaches, strategy and facility redevelopment impacts etc. so we are all guns blazing for 2024.

Regardless the moment the board extended Bevo's contract we essentially buckled in him until minimum very late next season. Most of the premiership coaches are out of contract at the end of 2024 and I don't think your sacking your premiership coach outside a rebuild two years early to get Hinkley, Cameron or first time head coaches.

Ultimately the Dogs aren't a power club and I'm just not sure a Hardwick or Scott would be tempted in an end of 2024 hypothetical sacking, even less so if key players wanted out of their contracts early. We will probably gain more out of high quality assistant changes until we appoint a new first time coach later down the track for list rebuild or major development.
