The capacity is 23,000.

But for a state who "allegedly" want to be involved with Australian Rules Football, it's poor in that manner.
They couldn't fit 23,000 into Aurora, maybe 20,000, but thats about it.

I think it's fantastic that Freo wont have to play there again! It's the longest road trip for any team and bloody unfair they have had to play there so often anyway! No one else has to travel as much as the 2 West Australian sides so why push things by making them go that much further? I'm sure Freo would rather be playing at the MCG where they have a much better record and much more support, which was evident on the weekend.

i hate to say it but the premier of tasmania does not make the AFL fixture so it wont make a difference what he thinks.

there are only a couple of teams which will go down there as the away team. they are freo and port. if the tasmanians want to see AFL get used to seeing these teams

What the fat wombat said.

This is fantastic news for our club. We love the MCG and hate the roadtrip to Tassie which we always seem to get once or twice a year.

Well done Tassie and Vic Dockers fans for staying away in droves. :)

OR, why don’t the members of the home teams get off their butts and go down and support their teams....Cant blame Freo for the lack of support Hawthorn & StKilda fans show their team at home games
Disagree, it's no different to 30,000 turning up for the Collingwood vs Fremantle game, or say 40,000 turning up this week for the Collingwood vs West Coast game.

I know first hand (through going to Lions games) that crowds fluctuate not only on form or the opposition team’s support, but also on the attractive nature and prospects of the game.

Do Geelong only have 19,000 fans? Of course not, there is much more crowds then just the form line, weather and opposition fans...you have to take into consideration that people budget for games at the start of the season and attend the games they value the highest.

It is an advantage for Port and Freo to play in Tasmania. Small crowds, less parochial as many of the Tasmanians may not actually go for either Saints or Hawks and are just going to see an AFL game.

I see where you're coming from but don't agree. The Tassie roadtrip is a shocker for Freo. Takes forever, and our record down there is terrible. Both Port and Freo play the MCG really well. The only team I'd like Freo to play down there is the Saints, if otherwise we were to play them at Telstra Dome. I think St Kilda are a 6 goal better team at the Dome. If it was ST K v Freo at the MCG, then we'd rather play in Melbourne.

It's not an advantage at all.
1) Robs our loyal Vic members of another game. (and yes there are many!)
2) A hell of a long way to travel, and travel home for the next game.
3) The team has an established routine when travelling to Melbourne which is starting to pay off. (decent record in Melb lately)
4) No finals will ever be played in Tassie, so getting familiar with the ground is not important. (much better off getting experience at the dome or G)

Much, much, much better off playing in Melbourne! The club will be very happy about saying goodbye to Tassie.

Edit:You be me to it Hoss, although I think playing the Saints at the Dome (while admittedly a harder task) would benefit us more long term.

I'd say the Dockers would be pretty happy about this turn of events.

Still, sounds to me like beggars wanting to be choosers, (in regards too Tassie telling the AFL just which teams they want to see!) but it's about time that Freo, one of the two highest travelling teams in the comp were given a break in this regard.

Why does it always have to be the interstate sides who play their away games there when there are plenty of teams in Melbourne (just across the strait) that can? - heaven forbid the Pies might travel more than 4 times a year.

I understand that the AFL wants the big crowds etc but really, can't we now start having a bit more eveness to the draw at the expense of the already huge sums going into the coffers at AFL House?

Correct. Hawks v Kangas would draw a similar crowd be it in Melbourne or Tassie.

Absolutely, but nope, we can't have that can we. Lets just get the already travelling teams to travel even further.

But on second thoughts Hawks v Kangas may be the wrong example as Kangas are already playing in the ACT. Imagine if they had to play in Tas as well. No wonder there's hardly any Vic based NM members. How many home games do they actually get to see?

The Tasmanian premier Paul Lennon sounds like a real w@anker.

I found this dirt on him:

In January 2006, Lennon faced criticism in the media over allegations of impropriety when it was revealed that he had received an upgrade from a A$200 per night room in the Crown Casino to a six-star suite worth up to A$4000 per night, complete with a private butler. The Crown Casino is owned by the Packer family's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited, which also owns a 50% stake in Betfair, the company to which Lennon's government days later awarded a A$700 million internet gaming licence

Their home supporters still see them 13 times a year which is more than an interstate supporter gets to see of their team. But still they could just go to the MCG any given Sunday and pretend that the black stripes are blue.

But seriously, Why doesn't the AFL at least try to rectify the uneveness of the draw and schedule games such as the Hawks v Pies and St Kilda v Bombers down there.

Eddy McGuire loves Tasmanians so much! He proved this with the whole Beaconsfield mining accident! So why doesn't he try get the AFL to let him take Magpies games down there?
