Paper schmaper.

We send a half forward as an extra at the stoppage, tonight it was Mannagh or Miers. 23 and 21 disposals tonight - they aren't doing that as classic forwards. They're part of the midfield mix.

Dangerfield and Holmes the 2 dominant midfielders on the ground. Atkins the pressure animal, who has actually had a really decent 6 weeks offensively. Bowes and Bruhn the blue chippers who also have their classy moments. Mannagh and Miers the silky outlets. Then Stewart (missing tonight) who was racking up plenty of coaches votes during his time in midfield.

I get that you need to double down on opinions you presented through the year, but Geelong's midfield has been good over the past 9 weeks outside of two halves - first half against Footscray, and second half against St Kilda. They torched the best midfield in the comp tonight.
Port the best midfield in the comp? They are the biggest downhill skiers in the league and go to water every finals series

Through the year they were up there. All except Rozee were in excellent form. They do have a worrying trend in finals, which probably means ruling out giving Geelong's midfield any credit. The consensus was still that their midfield would give Geelong's a frightful spanking - and that was before Stewart was out.

That being said they did bully our young midfield when we played them in Geelong.

Our midfield isn't that much older.
Bruhn (22), Holmes (21), Atkins (28), Dempsey (21), Bowes (26), Clark (19).

People think because they see Dangerfield and Duncan, we're old.

Hawthorn have a lot of experience now. Hardwick (27), Worpel (25), Jiath (25), Nash (26), Day (23), Newcombe (23).

Just imagine if Geelong were to bring in a superstar midfielder in 3 years time and you then have the likes of Bruhn, Holmes and Clark approaching 100-125 games.

Line up any other midfield on paper outside of maybe WCE and most of the Cats mids would struggle getting a look in. Miers, Close, Mannagh etc make up for that with absolutely elite work up the field essentially providing an extra 3-4 mids at the contest. The best half forward line there is atm.

With that said, the Cats midfield fortunes pretty much rely on the hamstrings of a 34 year old former superstar. He was as amazing tonight as JHF, Rozee and Butters were rubbish.

Wait. Lets line them up

  • Holmes: Current All Australian and emerging star of the game
  • Stewart: 5 x All Australian
  • Dangerfield: Brownlow + 8 x All Australian
  • Blicavs: All Australian & 2 x B&F winner
  • C.Guthrie: All Australian and 2 x B&F winner

On paper that group go alright. Who are the other midfields in the league with that sort or resume on paper?

We also have Bruhn who had a breakout season as a 22 year old this season averaging more than 5 clearances a game. Tom Atkins is now pretty proven as a premiership player and solid clubmen over a number of years. Lastly is Bowes who granted was discarded as an unwanted player two years ago but he's actually been good this season as a utility. I think in 5 years time he'll be talked about in much the same manner as Touhy (minus the Irish stuff).

Holmes All Australian?
Stewart's a defender who starts at centre bounces but that's it
Dangerfield is 34
Blicavs is washed as hell and played ruck and down back most of the night
C.Guthrie is playing VFL these days
Bruhn a 15-20 touch specialist who doesn't have a good enough tank

Yeah, it's pretty awful on paper.

As I said, Geelongs half forwards (who are the best in the league) make up for that by coming up to stoppage but the actual midfield is basically Danger or bust

Pretty sure Holmes didn’t get an AA this year bud.

Does Dangerfield’s birth certificate play midfield or does Dangerfield himself play midfield? Just asking for a friend.

Bruhn’s tank is irrelevant. If he gets his 18-20 touches a game and making good use of them playing in the midfield for 60-65 per cent of game time, then for the time he’s on the field he’s doing a good job. That’s 65 per cent of game time that someone from the opposition has to be matching what he does.
Can’t speak for all his games but it Mannagh’s 23 touches last night, over a third of them were centre-wing.
Holmes whether he made the final team or not is a gun and playing off half back or through the midfield he is an excellent player. There are numerous others that rotate through there. Gryan Miers is not a midfielder but he is one of the most damaging kicks in the game so if he DOES go to the middle for a stretch, he then strengthens the disposal of our midfield.

We are not an ‘exceptional’ midfield but we are not the worst by any means whatever way it gets painted. A midfield group does not have to be just the 4-5 players that start there, if it is a group that relies heavily on numerous players filling the gap.

The fact that we have hardly had a single player all season break 30 possessions and now find ourselves in a preliminary final should tell you that.

I was, and now I’m gonna be dead right when you get bundled out of finals. Enjoy the losses, can’t believe I get to see Geelong lose 2 finals in one season again 🥳
Eating humble pie yet?

It’s comical to claim we have the worse midfield when you look at the bottom four sides mids

I mean there could be an argument that we have a poor midfield for the top of the ladder but I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone is making it out to be , the kids will be bigger next year and hopefully we can trade in a gun that can ease the pressure off the developing kids and Danger moving forward

At the moment we have a mix of rotations with a lot of players I’m hopeful next year that it will be more consistent with the young kids being more physically developed for more TOG in the midfield

Who has a worse midfield than the Cats?

Richmond.
Nank, Taranto, Bolton, Prestia, Hopper, Dusty

Vs

Stanley, Dangerfield, Bruhn, Atkins, Bowes, Stewart

Hard to split that if all fully healthy. Richmond's injury list is as long as the yellow pages though so we'd never know.

But let's just say they are... Geelong has the 2nd worst midfield in the AFL, slightly ahead of the wooden spooners...
