I recognise that last night was a disappointing performance in a big match that we all really wanted to win, but it's time for a few of us to take a Bex, or something else relaxing, lie down and just chill out.
I love the sentiment of your post and feel myself that I'm measured in the ups and downs of afl.

But the signs appear ominous.

We played a benchmark team sure, but they were without 3 of their mature/best players in their starting lineup. We aren't missing anyone, really. Weightman is still a kid.

If one excuse is losing a player (Jones) to injury, who is 30+ and is returning to the afl system, as a pivotal key post, that isn't great from a risk perspective for a team chasing a premiership. And ironically Jones, we gave Young away, to the same team, after years of development, currently in the perfect age bracket.

We have made no significant coaching appointments, upgrades or changes. Other than Lade, who I feel is a glorified yes man and happy to be here, and yes I'm happy he's here. But the confidence of whether we're getting the best out of our players and list is diminishing.

We gave Hunter to an opposition team directly in contention.... The sheer arrogance and/or ignorance.

It's ****ing embarrassing.

The only justification is that we are setting up for a slow start to the season as part of strategy, to be peaking when it matters at the end, as opposed to falling away.

How can we expect Lobb to do anything if we don’t kick it to his advantage. Ben Brown had better delivery last night. Imagine if Brown was getting the ball bombed in allowing the opposition enough time to get 3 guys to float back to him.
More making a point that we get smashed in CB clearances and his lack of attendances. Not sure he’d make a huge diff but I’m sure Grundy doing 50% withTimmy roaming fwd would look 100% better

Last night was just cooked, I’ve never seen so many basic skill errors we were genuinely on a level with a flipping u12s side.

We are so devoid of any ****ing confidence it’s unbelievable, we are scared of those campaigners after what they did to us. Genuinely broken.

The team on the park was not the problem. Although Hannans probably in the bottom 5 players in the afl lmao

The Dees regular players (Spargo, Neal-Bullen, Sparrow) always look like All Australians against us. Quicker, stronger, more polished. Beyond frustrating.

I haven’t read any of the posts as I am depressed enough having watched the game.

New season. Same story.

1. We do not convert easy set shots when we have the momentum. It absolutely kills us. Naughton* and Bont. Two class players. Two easy misses in the second quarter. Then the momentum shifts, and we cannot defend it.

*Naughton could be Wayne Carey. But he is kicking like Levi Casboult.

2. Again we do not capitalise when we have the momentum when we make basic errors such as drop chest marks which cost us goals. Refer to JJ and I forget the other (JUH?) in the 4th quarter. Then the momentum shifts again.

3. Our inside 50 entries are poor. Our forwards often don’t have a chance. There is no harmony between our midfield and forward line.

4. We played one quarter, maybe one and a half quarters of decent footy that took the match up to the Dees. You do not beat a quality team in that manner. You need to play 4 quarters. Not 1. Not 2. Not 3. ****ing 4.

I could have copy and pasted this text from last year. Nothing has changed. I won’t shit can the defence given Jones was a big loss mid game.

Trying to think of positives:

1. Bruce wasn’t too bad I suppose.

Actually, I can’t be bothered.

Hawthorn and Essendon kicking better than us.. surely our skills are better than these two sides?

Also look at the differences going inside 50. We need to start kicking to advantage.

has Alex keath got vertigo..... I have never seen a guy go downhill as quickly as him...
What drove me crazy was how often Keath ended up being the closest defender to Pickett - especially as the game wore on. I don't know what our smaller backs were doing. One of them needed to be on Pickett at all times. He was such a key figure for their forwardline.

One of my favourite things on here is noticing a trend early. Voicing my concerns. Getting jumped on by all and sundry. Then watching as years later the majority opinion turns to what I had noticed.
Caleb Daniel in defence, welcome to the club.

Some other things to consider:

1. Lobb and Baker played their first games for the team\club. Jones obviously 1st game back after a long stint at Carlton.
2. Bruce played just his 1st game in his new defensive role.
3. Darcy is only a handful of games into his career.
If fit, they should all get a lot better as the season progresses.

4. Steven May was really the only structurally significant absence for Melbourne, and I'd argue that our lack of a genuine crumbing forward due to injuries was as significant a pregame loss for us as the loss of May was for them.

Remember most good things take time.

Writing was on the wall when he was caught in that one on one against Jarryd Roughead in the goal square a few years ago

I mean the bloke has an AA and a BNF playing in defence so nah I can’t really agree with you on that one.

Last night he was shit because he turned the ball over completely uncharacteristically

HBF gets caught in a one on one against a key forward? Does it matter that he’s 168cm or 178cm? Not really, that’s a breakdown in our structure it’s not his problem

He's been doing that for almost two years.
He also can't and has never been able to defend. Not just because of his height but because even I could break one of his tackle attempts.

The AA selectors are the same morons who we deride in the media thread and the B&F is decided by the same people that think Mitch Hannan is an AFL footballer.

I'm pretty comfortable with my assessment.

Agree, the only reason I can see for Daniel playing in defense in the past was his passing accuracy which has now gone to shit. Every time he has the ball he gets swarmed by the opposition putting pressure on his disposal effort resulting in turn overs.
