That was real bad!

Right on top in that second quarter but wasteful as usual and should've been more than 11 up. Then allowed the classic Melbourne 5 goals in 5 minutes to be down massive at half time. Rolled over and let them ream us in the second half.

Not a lot of winners out there. English was fantastic in the first half in particular but Gawn was still the dominant ruck on ground. Thought Richards was good (16 intercepts or something from him), Naughton never gave up, Treloar and Libba were decent, Scott had some good moments. Bruce was better than I expected but still had some dodgy moments.

Not the end of the world, Melbourne will be there or thereabouts this season. I was hoping for a lot more. We were bad against the good teams last year and nothing has changed. I don't think the preseason helped us be ready round 1. A bunch of intraclub matches (one which was an A team flogging a B team) and then beat up North. Think we thought we were further ahead than we are.
Agree with player summary apart from Bruce. Far too slow and slow to make decisions. I would have added Dale in there as decent. He tried to provide run and carry and chopped off a few.

Disagree on outlook though. Dispel going inside 50 is still ordinary.
I’ve like our list management but we are in need of some elite kicks

I think Bevo is a great coach and tactician but his team selection can seriously get stuffed.

Hannan had 6 disposals, 4 of which were clangers and 3 that led to turnovers.

Everyone and their mother can see he is not better than West. Just like we knew Gowers shouldn't have been constantly getting games instead of Weightman. Just like we saw that Lewis Young should have at least got a look in whilst Gardner and Cordy were continually spudding it up.
It makes no sense at all to name a side with 4 talls and a 190cm Hannan in the forward line.

It's almost like we were taking the piss by having one (who I can't name) small defensive forward. Or did we?

I'm still angry. I think I'm angry because we have the tools, we can do so so much better, but it keeps getting screwed up. So bloody rage inducing. Need a pillow to yell into.

I actually think we would do better without a coaching box. Players might actually have a clue what they're meant to be doing. We might have a system. We might have structure.

We even lost the free kick count 22-13 that’s not like us 😜

It was only 1 factor of the game, but really we kicked ourselves out of it in the 2nd quarter by not being clinical enough. Should have been 4 goals up and ended 4 goals down.

However, the umpiring tonight was nowhere near AFL standard. There was some good and experienced ones out there as well.

I don’t mind the idea of trying something different with the extra talls. There’s no point playing the same game plan as everyone else but not quite as well.

What I do find strange though is continuing to entrust a novel forward concept to a relatively inexperienced line coach who didn’t even play his football there, and then only having a single practice match against one or the worst teams in the competition.

People potting the tall forwards need to aim their word cannons a little further up the field. Our skillset and delivery forward of centre was an absolute disgrace all night. Other than the possibility of Melbourne being charitable, I have no idea how we built and then squandered the lead that we somehow managed to create.

Just because we went tall, doesn't mean we need to place it on their heads at every forward entry. The fact is that more often than not we kicked it completely over their heads. As great a player as Jack Macrae has been for our club. Im just about over his dinky little around the corner kicks.

Fitness has been an issue for yonks. Dunks was right haha.

When Josh Bruce first arrived at the club he also made a comment during an interview along the lines of the dogs not doing as much preseason running as St Kilda

I'm honestly starting to think we don't train as hard as some other clubs. Is this the responsibility of the strength and conditioning coach? Or is Bevo making these calls on how much time we spend on running drills versus ball skills during preseason work

Didn't know that.

That's shocking.

Luke's presser...
Q) What' went wrong
A) Centre Bounce Clearances, momentum "Lost function forward of the ball"
A) Drop off and pressure at the end of the game. Hope it's an anomaly
A) We have to be more consistent
A) Poor form with our ball use so an element of frustration crept in
A) Some layers broke down. Work in Progress and our attention is fully focussed

Q) Liam Jones
A) Off for scans - hopefully Liam is ok

Tough night. Looked right in it for long stretches. Hard to stomach conceding so many easy goals from centre square and D50 after it’s been such a known issue for so long. Melbourne are very good and if there is an upside then it’s that they really did not look better than us for long periods. They’re more efficient and that was a tough watch.
Pardon for my intrusion but I just wanted to say I know you guys are hurting right now but I honestly believe that this comment is true.
We weren't 50 points better than you. Some silly turnovers, luck, and inefficiency created that scoreline. I still expect you to make top 8.

No confidence with this guy anymore.

People may differ, but I’d say our 22 is comfortably better than their 22 tonight. Their best 22 is probably better, but tonight there was no significant talent disparity.

Yet it was a pathetic display. Absolutely pathetic. Incredibly poor skills, incompetent decision making, and a side that didn’t believe despite the obvious issues the other team had.

I can’t quite believe we’ve been beaten by 50 points with the team that played. This club is broken.

Funny how we lose our bundle after any biff. Caleb turfing Gawn into the ground, the dust up v. Freo and tonight after that dirty dog Pickett cleaned up Baz.
Captain had a simple set shot to give us all the momentum after that but it went exactly as everyone expected
