The thing is, we don't know the details of trades Essendon have rejected so far (apart from 17 alone). That means they can still accept a last-minute, 17 + fringe player, trade from us as being 'far greater than anything Port offered earlier' thus maintaining face.

In short, it is not certain to go to the tribunal.

Port Lose: Pick 17, Newton, Pick 37
Port Gain: Ryder, Pick 35

Geelong Lose: Pick 35
Geelong Gain: Newton

GWS Lose: Giles
GWS Gain: Pick 37

Essendon Lose: Ryder
Essendon Gain: Pick 17, Giles

Will Giles nominate the Crows as his club of choice though, I think Essendon will offer more coin but is that enough to get him there considering the state of bummerland?

Same as lowden, if we're using anymore than a 3rd rounder for either of those were paying overs. Keep the 2 2nd rounders for gorringe or an upgraded 2nd rounder

Doesn't mean anything at all because anyone can edit it but Giles' Wikipedia page yesterday was updated with his current club as 'Essendon', it's since been changed back.

If he were picking between lead first ruck at Essendon or back up to Jacobs at the Cows I think he'd pick Essendon, with Ryder leaving they'll offer him a better contract than the Tingles.

Would say a lot about the Crows ability to lure talent if an ex South Aussie knocks them back for Essendon of all clubs who are a less attractive destination than Melbourne if you could believe it.

o_O

Evidence to back up these thoughts. Or do you can all 22 year old ruckmen who have had persistent injuries since being drafted and have been part of a sub-standard development program? By the same measures you would no doubt have delisted Lobbe???

I'm not canning him. I'm saying that right now, Gorringe is no where near commanding a place in our best 22, and as such, Ryder would be my number 1 priority, especially considering Ryder has at least 4 good years left in him and we have just opened our premiership window.

Furthermore, Gorringe appears likely to either move to Port, or stay at GC this year. More than likely, if we don't land him this year, we'll be having the same conversation next year. I'd like to get him now, but if I had a choice between him or Ryder in this trade period, I'm picking Ryder all day.

Surely any "decent" ruckman looking for more opportunities would have a better chance competing for a spot against Bellchambers than Jacobs.

gotta remember that our second rounder is the end (pick 37). 3rd round starts at 41. Pretty close to 3rd round.
Semantics, pick 40 is worth a lot more than 41 die to the fact it's technically a second rounder. When the draft wad compromised and the first round went into the high 20s those picks were still considered 1st rounders. Explains why the Hawks and Gws swapped their late 2nd early 3rd round picks

There's no point in Geelong being involved in that deal. Swapping pick 35 for 37 is nothing.

A more realistic trade would be:
Port Lose: Pick 17, Pick 37
Port Gain: Ryder

GWS Lose: Giles
GWS Gain: Pick 52

Essendon Lose: Ryder, pick 52
Essendon Gain: Pick 17, Giles, pick 37

Thought maybee if we could get 35 we could use that along with maybe a late pick for Gorringe

lol pick 40 is not worth a lot more than 41. Being 2nd or 3rd round in that case means jack shit.

It's driving me nuts that I can't post on that Essendo board... I only hope a few of them read this and maybe open the eyes of their fellow Essendon posters. Some points that I thinkBombers posters can't see.

- Ryder is no where near the player Beams is.

- Ryder did not come in your top 6 at B&F, in his best year, and without Watson in front of him too....

- The ASADA stuff is part of the trade, stop burying your head in he sand about that.

- Essendon lost early picks as punishment, so 17 is more valuable than in a normal situation.

- Making a "statement" about not caving in to players who want to leave for easy trades does not apply like normal here - THIS IS AN UNUSUAL SITUATION!!

- Ryder does not want to be at the Bombers for "strong reasons in his mind", he will not play there next year.....

Cutting your losses is not buckling/giving in. It's showing common sense and other clubs/list managers will applaud you for it, not bend you over at the trade table for years to come.

The sporting community may even respect you again a little.

So a summary:

  • Port and Essendon are continuing to talk "Good dialog between the clubs" - continuing to talk, constructive talk between clubs.
  • Essendons perogative to get as much as they can for him
  • Deal is NOT done - so doesn't want to comment too much on specifics
  • On the greivence tribunal, Connors does believe Ryder is prepared to go the whole way (to the tribunal) if deal is not done.

Connors non-committal on Ryder. Said there is "very constructive dialogue going on between Port and Essendon" about "working through what adequate compensation is for Essendon". Referred to the paperwork being done, so perhaps some positivity there. Also said that if no deal is done, then it's 100% grievance tribunal.
