Re: Draft Camp Results

Exactly.
Choosing the correct button is completely different to assessing a situation on the football field and then making a decision.

It's just testing hand - eye.

The recruiters should know these boys inside out and know how they play on the field.

The draft camp is used in seperating a few players who you were line ball with.

Saying, wow, he's quicker than he looks on the field, maybe it's just because he can afford to run slower at the lower levels.

If Hurley did indeed run sub 3 seconds, no doubt that will put him up.

etc etc

Re: Draft Camp Results

No, people think it is an indicator of decision making skills under pressure. It's trollop.

Saying it is trollop does not make it so.

The AFL has developed 14 criteria for assessing players.
For example #3 is handpassing, vision, awareness.
To be rated in the top ('rare') category you need to have;

Outstanding peripheral vision, depth perception and skills on both
sides, executing with speed and accuracy. Always chooses right
option putting receiver into better position

The AFL benchmark is Simon Black.

The way peripheral vision is measured is by pushing the buttons, you so deride.

Of course recruiters know the general strengths & weaknesses of the draft camp invitees. The draft camp enables them to assess individuals against each other.

Do you honestly believe that if the tests were considered trollop, that the AFL/clubs wouldn't be jumping up & down about the cost?

FIWW Kinnear Beatson has previously stated that the psychomotor testing was a factor in Brisbane selecting Black. A factor; nothing more nothing less, just as with all the other tests at the camp.

How much is Naitanui's potential purely athletisism?

Last year Dave Gourdis was predicted to be picked up in the top 10 (Weaver had him at #5) and he didn't get drafted at all!

He is a better athlete than Nat in almost every way, plus he is an excellent contested mark.

Thanks to peggles off PRE for this:

Repeat 30 Metre Sprints:
6. David Gourdis 24.22 sec
4 – Nick Naitanui (Swan Districts, WA – ruckman) – 25.10

Vertical Jump
1. David Gourdis 81cm
1. Nicholas Naitanui - 78cm

20-Metre Sprint
1. David Gourdis 2.83 sec
4. Nicholas Naitanui – 2.86

Obiously there is a lot more than just athletisism, but that seems to be Nick's biggest assest and apart from his tackling he is no more athletic than several other guys who are not doing much atm.

I don't know much about his smarts so he'll probably be a gun - but is Nick a bigger risk than people think?

The difference is he is 201cm and is ferocious at the ball.

Natanui's ground level efforts are amazing, very clean. Described as "a cat at ground level"... more like an eagle, he swoops on it. :):thumbsu:

It's not just Natanui's athleticism. Yes, he doesn't look the most fluent and natural footballer out there but it works for him. He has great competitiveness and is the best tackler in the draft. People are under rating footy smarts. He doesn't look as smooth as some others, looks to be traveling at 50% with an arched back and sort of looks stoned, but it works for him. It's just his style. At ground level and inside work he is top class. He's like Hudson (from the Doggies) in close, hard ball gets he's awesome. Not many AFL ruckman can win the hardball and dish it to midfielders in close. Add to that his athleticism and mobility he is a monster.

Good to see ppl waking up to the talent of Schoenmakers. Rate him extremely highly, about time he true height was listed. I guessed 194cm def was bigger than his 189...so 193 is very nice. Looks tall, plays tall and is not slow and very agile. Quick, strong mark and accurate kick. Perfect CHF material. Going to be very very good. Got him at #11 atm in my top 20.

I rate him around 20th now he is listed around 194cm, quality KF and definitely is up there with Johnston and McKernan as the other KF prospects behind Watts.

It's true.

Is it just me or does he look like Ryan O'Keefe on occassions?
