Lets go back in time.

The year is 1995.

Collingwood has drawn 2 games during the season. Once in a 111-111 draw with Essendon in rd 4 then again in a 71-71 draw with Footscray in rd 12.

The game goes to overtime, and Collingwood manages to win in overtime both times.

Is it fair that Brisbane miss finals for Collingwood?

No, it isn't. Collingwood get 2 extra chances to win when they wern't good enough to win to begin with.

Overtime and awarding 4 points to the winner can **** off. If you can't win in regulation, you shouldn't get a 2nd chance. Finals Im okay with as you need a winner without stuffing over other teams (would be bs for a team to win the QF, then get 2 weeks off due to a SF draw). But home and away the draw should stand.

I agree with having extra time for finals and grand finals because we need a result, but I think draws during home and away are just fine. They're rare, special, a novelty and do no harm.

Don’t want set mins of extra time in finals, just keep playing until next score wins it.

Those last 2 minutes of adel bris were edge of seat with every contest a thrill. Extra time means stopping and starting virtually a new game. One team gets a few goals up and they’ll spend the remaining time creating stoppage after stoppage.

Like 95% of you, I voted "don't change a thing". But that's not strictly true - I'd happily get rid of the blatantly obvious self-serving agenda-pushing editorialising from commentators on this topic (and every other, always for the wrong option). Draws are great (extra time wins in H&A are cheap and unearned) - and to the extent other aspects of the sport aren't great, it's almost always their fault.

The other great thing about the draw is it keep's more teams in the hunt for the 8 for longer. Nothing like still being a mathematical chance and only relying on two teams to draw to go through.

They have a lot more draws in soccer and you never see their media or supporters calling for extra time every time they have one.

Dunno if they still do it but I think in MLS they had pens after draws - you didn't get as many premiership points for winning it that way though.

A draw is a perfectly acceptable, if frustrating result. A draw means neither side was good enough to win and sometimes that's the way the cookie crumbles. Extra time for drawn games during finals is a no brainer but not necessary in the regular season.

We have that in the SANFL - seems more logical to me. 4 premiership points for a win and 2 for a draw is exactly the same as 2 for a win and 1 for a draw - what's the purpose of the extra points?

The VFA introduced their points system in 1888, initially proposed to be 3 for a win and 1 for a draw.

The decision to instead make a draw worth exactly half of a win is documented, but seemingly not the reason to make it 4-2 instead of 2-1.

However, what we do know is that matches had only just changed to 4-quarter affairs in 1886, which could have been the inspiration.

You play for the full time, scores are level, so be it, two pefectly evn teams.

Both get two points to create interest in the final standings.

Of 150 respondents, 7.3% in favour of getting rid of the draw.
This is comfortably higher than the 5% threshold of support the AFL usually relies on to justify change.
Expecting an announcement that draws are a thing of the past in the next week or so.

Draws are shit. Sport is for fan entertainment so doesn't make any sense to just walk away with split points when 99% of fans watching and players playing would opt for a result if they could.

Taking 1 seasons results from nearly 30 years ago to justify keeping the draw?

I am all for extra time and draws suck arse. Play till we have a winner /end thread. It is not like draws happen often and the average would be less than 3-4 in a whole season.

People talking about Soccer is crap and they have 90mins of play and sometimes fail to even score a single goal so draws are way more common. NBA / NFL / MLB and most other big sports all have extra time or OT etc to get a result.

We are all after a result at the end of the day and if you lose in extra time you lose and it is quite simple but getting the result should be first and foremost IMO.

It is such an AFL thing to just say oh you guys did well and have 2 points each!

There is a result though, 2 points each. Just because there isn't a clear winner or loser means its shit. Makes sense to me, opens up the ladder more and could be the difference between making the 8 or making top 4 or finishing last.

Even on grand finals, the replay would be fine if not for the travel factor.

The player who lasts longest before Brad Hardie comes rushing out to stop it is declared the winner. To accentuate the atmosphere, the other players not boxing each other control the smoke machine…

If two teams land on a draw at the conclusion of four quarters then that’s how it deserves to go down. Only time we cannot have a draw is for finals.
