I still don't get the love for Deledio. Whilst he has been good in previous years he has'nt been superb and has had an interrupted pre-season. Given Richmond will struggle and he may be tagged a lot, is it better to save money for other spots in the team.

I have him at the moment but am thinking of downgrading to Grimes to allow me to updgrade Jolly to Sandilands.

Otten is coming back from a knee injury and only playing his second season, he had a 68 average for 2009 and didn't score over 60 once in pre-season. Not really going to be any better scoring-wise than Adcock, but he will probably be better value to trade up from as a cash cow.

It won't be like not having Barlow by any means.
Yeah fair enough. Will have a look at alternatives.
Slattery is best 21. Absolutely without question.
That's what I said.

I was referring to Hibberd being on the outer once Slatts returns.

I don't get why people are scared of the sub. Isn't it for a player who gets injured, in which case they wouldn't have played the rest of the game anyway? I know it doesn't have to be for an injured player - but I'd imagine a lot of the time it will be.

How often do players get injured though? I think you'll find more often than not the sub is used for tactical reasons.

Almost every game I would have thought, some they can play through, but that has been out of necessity. Now the choice is take a 100% fit but tired guy off/make a tactical change for positional advantage/remove a guy who is 50-75% fit. I guess it's what the coach sees more benefit in.

has anyone gone with jackson trengove?

Had him in my backs and rucks at various times but just doesn't fit my current structure. Having said that, if you told me he would average 75 for the year I'd pick him for sure. I see him averaging 60-70 which ain't gonna cut it.

Is there a minimum price a player can fall too?
Eg, If not, What if you buy a rookie for $90,000, they are used as a sub, come on in the fourth and average 5-10 dream team points over 5 games. Could they fall to say $40,000. you buy them, Then if they are started on the ground and not subbed, Your $40,000 player could rise to $250,000. very easy cash???

The backs (premiums) always appear to lack the true cream like the midfeild.

Not sure which TWO to include out of Deledio, Broughton, Duffield, Enright and Scotland.

Good to see the DT site is up again... thank god!

Defence - my last spot - who to pick

Which cheapie (under 100k) would you select out of

Hibberd (I already have Hurley who plays for the same team)
Toy ( I already have Stanley)
Gillies
Puopolo
Pederson
Cripps
Simpkin
Talia...

..........any others?

Tough call, currently I have Talia but I also have McKernan in my forward line so its a bit too much the same type of player. I als have Lower as well as Stanley on my bench.

I am leaning towards Puopolo - I am light on for Hawks players and think maybe he's most likely to step in and play.

The rest of my defence is reasonably strong (Gibbs Connors Fisher Gram Hurley Laidler Otten) so I am really looking for somebody who will play regulary and make capital gains

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Defence - my last spot - who to pick

Good thread, very important to get this stuff sorted.

I would pick Hamish Shepeard. Has Def/Fwd eligibility to go with your others and will play from rounds 3 onwards because of our injury list and I spoke to Harves the other day and he says 'The Hammer' is being kept under wraps to be unleashed early in the season.

Re: Defence - my last spot - who to pick

Cheers. Very light Dockers players. Will consider.

The other name that has popped up is Duigan.

Here is Neil Craig Talking about using Otten as a potential Sub this season.

source - afl.com.au

ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig has identified defender Andy Otten and utility Scott Stevens as two players perfectly suited to the new substitute role.

The Crows experimented playing with 21 players and a substitute at different stages of the pre-season competition.

Opinion on what type of player makes for a good substitute is divided.

Several coaches have floated the idea of handing the green vest to a back-up ruckman, while others are adamant the sub must be a running player who can help with the increased physical demands created by having one fewer player on the interchange bench.

Craig leaned towards the latter option, saying the key to a good substitute player was versatility.

"An Andy Otten or Scott Stevens would make the perfect sub," he said on Tuesday.

"Andy could come on and play down back or in the midfield … and Scott Stevens can go forward or back, so he also gives us some flexibility.

"I'm not saying that's necessarily what we'll do, but I think they're the type of players that would made a good substitute."

Do others think that having Broughton, Adcock and Grimes all in the same backline is a risk worth taking? I am contemplating replacing Broughton with Duffield, but then Duffield didn't seem to handle the tag all that well last season.

I've really gone sour on Otten in the last few days and this "perfect sub" stuff just puts me off even more.

Might just be better to saved some cash and get something else.

If all of Heppel, Duigan, Lower and Puopalo get named for sure I will be going without Otten but we'll see.

I ditched him a fair while ago. While his JS is fine initially, if the form he had in the pre season doesn't improve, he could easily lose his spot to guys like Smith. I also think Coad will score just as well, and for 30k cheaper.

Youve got to be kidding??

I watched him play against Swans in the WAFL last week, im still unsure how he gets a game playing league for east perth let alone fremantle.

Re: Defence - my last spot - who to pick

There is a reason why I posted Otten is a perfect early rounds sub candidate for the Crows a week or so ago. ;)

Solidly not in my team anymore.

Re: Defence - my last spot - who to pick

I got in before him.

I took him out of my team last week. I really don't think he's that necessary a pick and is just an overpriced rookie with questionable job security.

You're not going to get 80s from Otten. It's better off to just get Stanley or who ever instead.

Re: Defence - my last spot - who to pick

Looks like ill be bringing in Coad or Heppell now isntead of Otten. Hpefully Otten loses value being a sub ie: drops from 142k to 120k~ and the finds a permanent fixture in the starting 21 once he finds more confidence and form. Could be a nice little downgrade option.
