Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Also, low SD is probably more important if you're going for a League win.
Im not the league win expert, but Im not so sure this is true for all cases. If im playing a game against a guy who has a better team (and ranking) than me, Id rather be holding 22 blokes who could all go BANG and hit 120-130, than 22 blokes who average 95. This is where a high SD can be good, as it means you have some match winners.

Yeah, it cuts both ways. In terms of League strategy, I always feel a lot more comfortable if I'm getting the wins on the board early notwithstanding it's during the building phase. You want your keepers to be reliable for this. Rookies and unique cheapies, it's probably not quite as important and it's good to have a couple of blokes in the last two spots in each part of the ground with the potential for big upside - eg Malceski last year.

What are peoples thoughts on old timer Brucey. I like him for this year.

Bruce has always been a favourite of mine. However, new club, new role....over 30.l..plenty of questions to be answered...plus he's in that shitty bye group so you would want to be sold on him. Definately one to watch pre-season to find out his role. I believe he'll play either as a half backman or a tagger....which one will be interesting to see!!

I dont know if im not selecting the right players but im not having to much trouble with the bye rounds when 3 teams miss.

But as you mentioned brucesy role will be important, although ive seen him tag before and still find heaps of it. If i was coaching Hawks i would send Sewell back to being a tagger and let Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Rioli, Lewis, Young, Bateman find the ball through the middle.

The thing i like about Brucey is he seems to be a B.Harvey just keeps on going and doesnt have injury problems due to the way his game is played.

Also he has avg over 100 before in an ordinary mebourne side and never really has had the chance to play for a top 2 side when hes fully matured/developed.

Bruce was also touted as the fittest bloke at training with a lot of boys struggling to go with him. Pretty impressive for a bloke thought passed his best.

His best may never have been seen yet. He hasnt played in a good enough side when fully matured. So the hawks may be that for him.

Also if he is as fit as ever and quick as ever than i dont think he is past his best.

Interesting that there always seems to be a 30+ year old that has a good season in the past 3 years or breaks out to a degree.

Matthew Richardson increased his avg by 11/12 in 2008 from previous year (avg 98) - his best of whole career

Brad Johnson increased his avg by 11 in 2009 from previous year (avg 98) - 2 off his best for career

Brent Harvey increased his avg by 12 in 2010 from previous year (avg 95) pretty much his best of his career

Theres always one old fart that improves, im thinking Bruce could be that.

Agree DWD a lot to like about Bruce could play the Hodge role of 2010 setting up play and is unlikely to cop a tag with other more pressing hawks to be combated which is an added bonus.

Could also go HFF with his excellent disposal skills would be loved by the forwards who at times struggled with the pathetic delivery in 2010.

A very committed guy and with the added support of a team doing well may be just the tonic.

I certainly hope so :thumbsu:

Just wondering if anyone new if Daniel Connors will be a def this year? Played in defense all the time for the tigers last year kinda like a quarter back.

but with all the retirements at adelaide dont you think he would be better?

and also adelaide will certainly be towards the top

i certainly think he will be

Personally i dont think he will be. Tabling could replace goodwin on the half back line, bock never really played anyway and phil davis will take that spot. I see him around the same 85 mark personally.

Round 22, forward tag from peake, 55 points

more attention could hurt him too.

There an extremely tough team to predict, but to say they will finish near the top is a bit strange considering they lost (Bock, Mcleod, Edwards, Goodwin, Burton). Any team is going to struggle after losing these players all in the same year. Yes they have picked up Tambling and Jacobs, although i would say that Jacobs aint going to improve the side drastically and Tambling we all know is yet to do anything with his career to like.

Although having said that - they are hard to predict mainly because they still seem able to fast track youngsters and still have a strong midfield and HBF line along with a dangerous forward line.

Midfield: Douglas, Vince, Thompson, VanBerlo, Mackay (there season could depend upon how these players go) along with youngsters of high quality Sloane, Dangerfield, Henderson

Forward: Tippett, Walker, Porpz, Knights, Dangerfield along with a mature aged I.Callinan could prove dangerous.

There backline looks quite weak now and where they finish next year could purely depend upon the coach and strategies by the coaching team for the next year.

What's everyone's thoughts on Suban?

3rd year player who had the 2nd Year blues of sorts. averaged 59 last year, however with an improving young side, he could easily slip onto a wing or rotating onball, and possibly average around 80.

possible problem includes Freo's bye rounds, which makes things a little more difficult

good pickup, will have to consider him now. Sort of forgot about him.

Something that also goes his way is the injuries to freo already.

With these reasonable possibilities

Pavlich - forward
Haselby - retired (Already happened)
Barlow - injured early rounds
Morabito - season (already happen)

All of a sudden come round 1 they could be missing 4 genuine midfielders that they had last year that they dont have this year. Also Roger Hayden to miss 1st half of season aswell, which helps Suban across half back.

3rd year is also perfect for him. Quite alot of breakouts happen during these years.

Suban doesn't find enough of it to be a DTr. Kicks long when he gets it, no 1-2s. Goes missing for extended period and borderline best 22.

Ibbo is headed for the midfield though ;)
