Five people, including three young children and the suspect, have been injured in a knife attack in central Dublin that sparked riots in the city centre.

Public transport was suspended and patients advised not to travel to a nearby maternity hospital unless absolutely necessary after clashes between riot police and anti-immigrant protesters.

11 Garda vehicles (police cars) and a double decker bus for a total of three buses went up in flames and windows are being smashed including the Holiday Inn Hotel and McDonalds.

The government is reviewing security around parliament after a recent protest trapped lawmakers inside.

Ireland's police chief said he had not ruled out any motive for the original attack, including terrorism.

* Might be a good idea not to jump to any conclusions yet regards motivation

There's a big mess to clean up with 34 arrests.

The capital is waking up this morning to the aftermath of violent scenes, looting and chaos in Dublin city centre yesterday after three children and a woman were attacked near a school earlier in the day.

A female creche worker and a five-year-old girl are in a serious condition after the incident on Parnell Square, in Dublin city’s northside. Two other children suffered lesser injuries. And a man, who is currently under guard, also suffered injuries during the incident. He is currently in an unnamed hospital in the city.

Shortly after the incident, a group of protesters gathered at the scene.

It wasn’t long before they attempted to break the garda cordon to the scene. Within a couple of hours, hundreds of people were on the street and scenes gradually grew more violent.

As darkness fell on the capital, chaos ensued. Public transport vehicles including a bus and a Luas tram were set on fire.

A number of Garda cars were set on fire, windscreens were smashed and the vehicles were jumped on.

So much violence and stupidity in the world at the moment it's a bit shocking. Not many facts have come to light, but it appears a non Irish resident was responsible for the stabbing then a riot ensured which according to the police commissioner said was driven by a "lunatic hooligan faction" who were "driven by far-right ideology". Madness.

They were out again in big numbers for a second night. There's a sense of real turbulence atm, right across the world.
