Dumb shit you've seen parents do

My eldest din't know what Maccas, HJs and the like was for the first 3 or 4 years or so of his life. Only watched ABC kids so didn't see any advertisement either.
Same, he's only starting to learn these brands because of the ****ing ads in the cricket, which he loves. You can mute the ads, but they still work it in.

That's right.

That's why we are parents and not children.

If you are hungry, you will eat what is put in front of you.
I was in that camp and am still sympathetic to it but my youngest ( I have 3 children) just doesn't have an interest in food. We told him that he had to go without and he would happily take it. This would not normally be a problem but he was for a long time in the lowest 3% for weight based on age. Dinner was an ordeal we would sometimes sit for hours at the dinner table until he forced down his meal dry retching and carrying on. He now still hasn't moved far from his staples of Weet-Bix and Chips. He doesn't even really like cakes and chocolate

I read an article yesterday about a boycott peter rabbit hashtag doing the rounds because there’s a scene where someone has blueberries thrown at them (the character has an allergy to blueberries) and that’s insensitive and dangerous to families who have children with food allergies. Most of them looked like the “as a mother” type crowd
its not very smart by the makers of the movie
prior to this film there has been a recent incident of a rubbing peanut butter on another kid they knew was allergic to get them back for something

this is a kids movie its not a good use of a plot device to have the hero's exploiting the food allergy of the bad guy

Wait until they're 7 or 8 and start quoting the odds! A lot of the advertising on TV, particularly during sport telecasts, really needs to piss off.

You might be right but I suspect if you’re gonna be outraged by this then any plot device used to show a villain as evil is going to trigger you.

you've got it backwards
it's not the bad guy using a food allergy to cause anaphylaxis, it's the good guys, in this case the bunnies need to get past the big bad human so they knowingly try and set off his food allergy

its a serious life threatening thing to do and having the heroes in a kids movie do it kind of goes against what kids should be learning about food allergies

most people I know think things like lactose intolerance or being bloated from eating is the same as an actual food allergy

most menus are more worried about whether something is gluten free or vegetarian than whether there is egg, soy, nuts or other well known allergens in it.

go out with someone with an allergy and watch most restaurant staff have no idea whats in the food and have to go check with the chef to see if something is safe

a lot of people still don't seem to get that anaphylaxis can kill you, most people don't seem to know that the epipen is just a stalling tactic and that if the ambulance doesn't come quickly enough the person is dead anyway

I recently had my first child and already talking to my partner about rules around eating.
I was overweight through most of my childhood and that has had long lasting physical and mental consequences so i want to do everything i can to make sure my child doesn't end up with the issues i had.

Yeh I wont pretend I followed the detail properly but I also maintain its a movie, in the context of the plot any action to overcome the big bad human might teach a bad lesson. If the bunnies had set up a trap for him and he fell and knocked himself out then you have to have the same conversation with your kids anyway (its not okay to knock people out to get where you need to go).

Take your kids to any movie and you have to tell them whats okay and whats not running a boycott campaign is an overreaction IMO.

Yes it's a movie and a fantasy one at that what with the talking rabbits.

Personally I think it's a reflection of the lack of understanding and serious given to food allergies among society, as such the organisations that are trying to change that will latch onto this as a platform.

You will also get people who have lost a family member who take issue with it, and people living with food allergies may take issue with it also

There are a lot of kids with food allergies, I just see it as stupid from Sony to do this

I can see where you are coming from and perhaps if I had a kid (or a kid with a food allergy) I would feel differently but this to me, seems like a bunch of parents desperately trying to bubble wrap the world. Its a movie and censoring kids from a movie or about particular things within that movie is a parents job, not the movies.

wait the berries were thrown at the characters on purpose to induce discomfort? wouldn't that be considered assault/ endangering life.

Also the severity of the "Bad guys" needs to be taken into account imo.

I don't disagree with the bolded part

a lot of the noise isn't coming from parents trying to bubble wrap kids, it is coming from Anaphylaxis related organisations saying the movie is sending the wrong message about the issue

now I haven't seen the movie yet (I will I have a kid the right age after all) and I won't be stopping her from seeing it as she likes Peter Rabbit and as you say it's not a topic that cannot be discussed with kids and be used as an opportunity to talk about the issue

but I do think it's an example of a poor choice made by the makers of the movie and I have no issue with people voicing their opinion on that, in this day and age that often leads to extremes on social media and people calling for boycotts, thats not an issue unique to parents either btw

the only reason this is really related to parents is because it is a kids movie

**** me.

To Kill a Mockingbird was banned from some schools in the US because it made people uncomfortable.

Erm, isn't that the point?

"I swore never to read again after 'To Kill a Mockingbird' gave me no useful advice on killing mockingbirds. It did teach me not to judge a man based on the color of his skin, but what good does that do me?"

I posted this on the SRP board. Parents pushing the principal to ban a few decent books because of some language in them.

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp...to-inappropriate-content-20180212-h0vyeo.html

"raised concerns about material being given to our students that could be deemed to be inappropriate for their age level or that has explicit sexual references or connotations"

age level: year 11 and 12 students

LOL how are some parents so out of touch with reality?

"Anglican school"

I see now.

Yeh, that's certainly true, although I would argue the outrage of many parents groups over this and other minor inconveniences does get blown up at times. Not exclusive to parents but applicable to this thread.

That's a long bow id suggest. Plus I don't think rabbits can stand trial... Maybe in texas.

Also the severity of the "Bad guys" needs to be taken into account imo.

I don't follow?

easy target like cyclists for drivers

twitter and facebook mean these things get shared and you will get people comment on them, we're doing it here as well

it's more fun for the click baiters to push the mothers outrage angle because they can post dumber tweets than what the official organisations tweet

What are people's thoughts on primary school lunches? Say a kid had a packet of chips, a roll up or le snak, a Prima and a sandwich pretty much every day - ok or not?

When I was a kid, we used to have tuckshop orders, and I would get a hot dog. I was once every couple of weeks (I had lunch made for me the other days), but it was cool, and I used to hang out for "tuckshop" day.

This was back in the 70's, before government and lobby groups dictated everyone's every move, and now all kids get at the tuckshop is fruit and veg.

I am so glad I was a kid back then, rather than today, when the fun-police are around.

There’s not enough you mean. I’m not talking about bullying people but we as a society need to be caring for each other. Not saying it’s alright to be obese. The BMI doesn’t do much for me but when a large proportion of our country is overweight, we need to be telling each other that being fat is unacceptable!

If we really need to have a more "caring" society, than how about supporting each other, and encouraging one another, rather than put on guilt trips and call people names?

How about this? Maybe society, if they want people to lose weight, then offer support to help them, buy them a gym membership, or drop off a fruit platter at their door.

Or how about encouraging people, and tell them all the benefits of being fitter. Don't make them feel like they are "lesser" for being overweight, but show how being slimmer gives far more benefits to them.

The whole "caring for society" thing is BS. People chide others about weight, because pointing out things we find fault in within others makes us feel better about our own failings.

People don't offer advice to others to help them, they impose their views on everyone else, because "they know everything".

I was a kid in the 90s and this was the same.

These days parents will campaign for tuckshops to sell healthy foods but feed their kids shit, give them notes to get out of PE and let them play Playstation all weekend.
