Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Midfielders follow in their fathers' footsteps
Buckley has barely played either because of an ankle injury, something that swayed other clubs from bidding for the small, skilful midfielder who played alongside Mitchell as part of the AIS-AFL Academy two years ago.

Buckley said knowing he was Carlton bound had made his season less stressful and he would be ready to start running again in three weeks. He hoped the help he had already received - from development coach Darren Harris to senior coach Brett Ratten and captain Chris Judd - would help him make a strong start to the pre-season.

''Knowing my fate was sort of sealed, I wasn't worried about it too much, but the club's been great with my injury,'' he said. ''They've really helped me and haven't put any pressure on me for this year. They've just given me a lot of time, and a lot of help with my development.

''It's been a pretty disappointing year for myself, but I've learnt a lot and I'm looking forward to getting down to pre-season now and earning respect from the players and repaying the faith Carlton's shown in me. It's been a huge aim to play for Carlton. I've pretty much grown up in the backyard there.''

It's scary that a player as slight as Buckley will be eligible to play next year. :D

Isn't a real titch like Brett Backwell.

Kade Simpson and Skinny Lappin made it.

Team GWS prospects take their first bow
Victorians Dylan Buckley, Tom Bugg, Luke Parker and Andrew Gaff were appointed to the leadership group along with Curtly Hampton.

McCartney says the coaching staff had no influence over the selection of the leadership group.

"The beauty of the voting system was that nearly all the guys had a vote. The spread of votes was quite even. It was great to have the new assistants involved," he said.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Dylan Buckley has little chance of being unknown
"Even sometimes now I walk in and see someone like Chris Judd and think, 'What the hell? What am I even doing here'?"

"I suppose it's been a blessing in disguise. I haven't been able to play, but by getting down to the club and learning the weights program, diet and injury prevention ... all the things other players will learn next year, I've been able to learn that now,"

"A lot of the older blokes have been really good and always up for a chat," he said.

"I've always wanted to cement that I'm not just the 'son of'. I want to be my own player and I think they understand that and will give me a shot just like any other kid, which is all I can ask for.

"It's hard sometimes. I get compared to Dad."

"It's pretty much just steaks and Musashi at the moment," he said.

"I've got a planner for everything, for every single day and every single time that I have to eat. I've just got to eat as much as I can."

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Renewed feud
Three years ago Mitchell and Buckley lined up against each other in the Grand Final of the Yarra Junior Football League's under-15 competition - Mitchell for Ashburton and Buckley for Fitzroy.

"My team got up and I still hold it over him, even today," Buckley says with a broad grin.

"It is kind of [surreal] to be in this situation though. If you'd asked three years ago, I would have said that it was a long shot, but it's definitely something we've both been aiming for."

A lot will have to go right for both players to be selected in the senior squads for their respective clubs when they first meet next season with Buckley, in particular, needing a strong pre-season after an ankle injury stalled his development in 2011.

"I hurt it at the start of the year, but they said that it would come good," Buckley explains.

"I played a bit of footy and it kept coming up, so I had to get a little clean out in the end, but I'm fine now and I'll start running in the next few weeks.

"I think Tommy's probably got me covered at this stage, he used to throw me about a bit and I think he still could, but I'll bulk up soon."

“I don’t want to be like my dad…obviously I would like to be as good as he was, but I think that we are different players.”

Buckley conceded he contemplated accepting the Carlton number 16 Guernsey, made famous by his father in the late 70’s and 80’s, but decided instead to carve his own path, agreeing to wear the vacant number 7 made famous by current Carlton Coach Brett Ratten.

When asked about his junior days at the local level playing for Fitzroy in the Yarra Junior Football League, Buckley was quick to praise his junior coaches for his development and success.

“I didn’t even know dad played footy when I was a real young kid, I just started playing because a I met a kid and he was like come down and play [at Fitzroy] and I was like yeah alright…It wasn’t until around U14 that I started to realise there could be something in this.”

When asked about Buckley’s progress as a player over the past couple of years Gill acknowledged his raw talent and commitment, but still holds concerns for his physical durability.

“Dylan’s a pretty classy act and over the last couple of years his game has improved a lot. Dylan’s challenge now is to improve his body to withstand the wear and tear of elite football, but certainly his skills are tremendous, he certainly reads the ball well.”

Nice kick.

Close to 50 out, yet it clears the fence. :)

*expects bump if that's all Buckley does with Carlton*

;)

Tough kick from that spot too.

How much weight has he put on? Looks a lot bigger.

Coach Brett Ratten later praised his efforts.

''We found out that Buckley has got a real future,'' he said.

Surely it's time to give this kid Garletts spot in the 22 or even start him a sub.he has the smarts to play as a small forward. Bradley hill is a midget and he is getting real experience playing as sub for the hawks. Make a change to underperforming players and play kids that have passion ratt''s FFS!

Dylan Buckley #7 - Player Review 2012

Age: 19 (1st year in the AFL system)

2012: Played one senior game in the pre-season

All father-son selections will inevitably be compared with a playing history which is not their own. However, it is too early to tell whether Dylan will come anywhere near the achievements of his 164 game, triple premiership, best and fairest winner father, Jim Buckley. The early signs for Dylan are good.

"Obliviously, the older Carlton faithful are going to remember dad, but I want to forge my own career path and as much as the people love dad around the club we are different sort of players and I would love to play my own game.''
Dylan showed huge promise in his junior years, playing as a speedy forward and midfielder for the TAC Northern Knights, Ivanhoe Grammar and Ivanhoe FC. Carlton committed to taking Dylan 12 months prior to selecting him in the 2010 National Draft. Because of this, Dylan was able to spend time at Princess Park on development, strength and conditioning and importantly, rehab on his injured ankle. The time spent at Princess Park could only have eased his transition into the club for the 2012 season.

For most carlton supporters, their first exposure to Dylan Buckley was during the preseason competition against Adelaide. With his first touch of the ball, Buckley gave us an indication of his temperament and sense for the goals. Of note was the ease of his kicking action which saw the ball sail through three quarters of the way up the goalposts, having kicked from 48 metres out.

The match against Adelaide was to be Dylan’s only match in the senior side for 2012. It appears Carlton has a long-term approach for Dylan Buckley. For an AFL player Buckley is quite short at 176cm (only Eddie Betts is shorter at Carlton) and light of frame (at the beginning of the season he was 5kg lighter than any other player on the list). Combine this with his baby-faced good looks and cheeky, sometimes feisty, on-field attitude and Dylan could easily have become a very thin slice of meat in an AFL sandwich. Perhaps because of his likability and small frame his teammates in the Northern Blues seemed to keep an eye out for him and were quick to lend their presence if anyone tried any stand-over tactics on Dylan. Paradoxically, this seems to be spurning Buckley to become more of his own own man; an ‘I can look after myself, I am my own player, not Jim Buckley Jr’ approach.

At the few Northern Blues matches I saw this year, Buckley showed himself to be a live-wire forward, capable on his day of kicking a string of goals in succession to break open a match. Dylan has explosive pace and good game-sense, although he needs to instill a team-first philosophy; as he is often guilty of seeking personal glory over the creating opportunities for the team. He also needs to work on his ‘tank’, as he doesn’t yet have the endurance to go with his pace. He is well liked by his teammates, coaching staff and supporters. If steroids were legal and not detrimental to health, then I would suggest Dylan should take a large dose daily. In lieu of this, Dylan will need several pre-season to develop a strong AFL frame.

Fast forward to 2013 and Dylan is likely to earn a few games in the senior squad. This may be purely for developmental purposes (where he may be selected to play against younger bodied sides or those low on the ladder) or, as a result of the match commitee creating real competition for Jeffy Garlett’s position. Dylan is nowhere near Jeff at this stage, but should Jeff string together another inconsistent season he will certainly not be an automatic selection if Dylan keeps improving on his 2012 form.

I am really hoping that Dylan takes his opportunities this year. I went to some VFL games last year and I think he has the ability, poise and skills to make it and with him adding some KG's over summer this could be a great year for him.

January:

"Buckley: Just a ball of energy this kid. Was watching him in one drill, take a mark, run at pace and kick it lace out to a team mate further up field about 30m and by the time I saw the team mate mark it I notice Buckley just trailing the ball and asking for the one-two, something very few of the others bothered doing. Not only very quick but loved that sign of his work rate and he'll be a serious player when he has the body size to match the mongrel."

Going into Round 1 Mick has thrown Bucks' name into the mix of players pushing for round 1 selection despite him not being chosen in any of the 4 NAB Cup weeks and playing them all in the VFL practise matches. However for those following the info from the Nth Blues you wouldn't be surprised as Dylan features heavily in the match reports with frequent mention of his grit and ability to go against the tide when the chips are down.

Very confident we'll see Dyl debut this year, probably against the Giants in round 10 but his form may warrant it even sooner.

Very quick, tough, good overhead, booming kick, loves to tackle and is well skilled. Has all the tools but the overrated (IMO) height. He looks slightly bigger this preseason but nothing like a peptide fuelled Melksham like transformation.

He's a top bloke. I was lucky enough to play junior footy with him at Fitzroy and from the age of 12 you could see a player who punched WAY above his weight, and had that almost maniacal approach to footy. Loved the contest and almost wanted to get hit.

It's really good to see that he's developing the frame to match the approach so that he can compete with the big boys. Initially I thought he probably has the ability to be a very high quality inside midfielder, but after seeing that he's a lot quicker than I initially gave him credit for I believe he's got the potential to both an inside and outside mid.

Would love to see him get a debut this year and in the mean time will be really good to know that the VFL side is getting some depth to it.

Yeah, very excited about Dylan. He'd missed 1-2 years of footy when we drafted him (maybe a godsend in the end, allowing us to get him unchallenged) and would've been extremely rusty - both in terms of skills and general fitness.

I love that he's a bit cocky and walks the walk. Should be close to regular games in 2014 IMO, maybe by the end of this year if we're lucky.

I'm tipping him to make an appearance against the Pies.

Good to see Bucks Snr there last night.

When Jim was up there next to Mick, I kept thinking how awesome it would have been to have Dylan up there too.

Wouldn't mind seeing Dylan playing next week. Be interesting to see how he goes for Northern Blues this weekend.

just asked them on twitter but how many of the senior list boys are in the side tomorrow morning?

Both Bucks & Watson didn't play last week - giving me the impression they were in contention for spots last night, so hopefully they play tomorrow. Hope Laidler gets a run too.
