On the flip side, what if the journalist had gotten to the bottom of her motivations and found out she was a racist bogan...there was still nothing to be gained by hanging her out to dry that way. The end result would be the same as it is now. As for identification, that's a non-issue...it happened on live TV, she was identifiable.

The end result wouldn't be the same, we'd have the relevant information we need to digest the incident without the need to ultimately base whatever stance we end up taking on conjecture.

If I knew she was a racist bogan, trust me, we wouldn't be having this conversation mate.

As for the live TV thing, I was watching that game and I still don't know what her face looks like. Might've seen it, but I didn't commit it to memory, who would? It's the papers and news showing her face that cement her identity in peoples minds.

That, and the fact they rushed to give interviews, hand over the letter, have cameras filming while she called Goodes etc...we live in a world where 15 minutes of fame is highly valued by some. The family grasped it with both hands.

Too much double standards in racism. Harry sitting there saying how hurtful and disappointing it is to hear Eddies comments , yet he goes and sledges Hawkins and tries to justify he wasnt being homophobic by calling Hawkings a "fat f$!@" instead. Yeah good one Harry , that's logic

Why is one more hurtful than the other in the eye of Harry.

Likewise Goodes effort on Gibson a few weeks back. Then Hird a few years ago. You can hurt someone physically and that's accepted? As its in the game ? Yet you are called words in a game and that's borderline murder?

Very nice of you to point that out. How soon people forget or maybe they selectively remember. But that's splitting hairs.

Come on mate. The genie was out of the bottle by then and I doubt they were savvy enough to seek out independent council. They'd have taken the advice of the friendly people with the cameras and the microphones who came to them offering help to get everything straightened out so they could put it all behind them.

Jeez, why are you so insistent on demonizing these guys?

I'm not demonising them, but a lot of people seem to be treating them like they are a family of halfwits who couldn't have an intelligent thought if their life depended on it (ie. she was too thick to understand her comment, they weren't savvy enough to hold off the baying hounds of the media). She made the comment, they chose to speak to the media...they accepted the consequences of what happened, people here seem to be trying to provide an out for them that they are not even looking for.

You wouldn't need to be anything like a halfwit to get overwhelmed in their shoes. You're painting them to be fame-hungry mercenaries or something. From what I've seen they've just taken the path of least resistance at each turn. Talked to who wanted to listen to them, done what was asked of them and let whoever wanted to film it film it.
What is it about any of that that's earned your apparent scorn?

"she was too thick to understand her comment"
& not to go backwards, but I would've thought understanding her comment as racist would indicate her to be thicker than her having not understood it as such, given we already know she used it.

Well, she called Adam Goodes an ape then said she had no idea it had any racial connotation whatsoever...that went some way to earning my displeasure, though I think scorn is a step too far.

And I certainly didn't paint them as 'fame hungry mercenaries', I just pointed out they grabbed a little 15 minutes of fame while they could. The girl smiling through her reading of the apology letter certainly conveyed the impression that they weren't being forced into anything they didn't want to do.

I could equally turn the question around and ask why you think the girl who called Goodes an ape is an innocent victim who deserves our sympathy, but that would also be too simplistic an analysis of your position.

That all said, I have no issue with the girl and think it's time to move past her comment, but I do have issue with some of the racist, bloody minded excuses that many people are offering up in this thread, which are related to the initial incident.

You'd've been happier with her if she'd been deliberately racist? Or you just think she's lying?

Potato, potarto.

How do you think the media operates? Do you think they have coercive powers? I doubt they score many exclusives by gunpoint. I bet they're more into persuading people it's a good idea to be filmed/recorded.

Righteo. I'll take it on trust you're not referring to my shit there.

JackOutback and mess....SHE IS A MINOR, 13 years old and Channel 7 broke the law and they are getting away scot free. You are both arguing over what is and what isn't a racist. You have both missed the point the media is now a law unto itself. And they have gotten away with it under the guise of stamping out public racism and using this girl as the face they have selected. If it was my kid regardless of what was said you would find that director of the game telecast strung up on the nearest pole.

Thank god there are no fat, balding, buck teeth, big eared, spectacle wearing, hairy, smelly, homosexual, black or white football players. The ball would be bounced and nothing would happen.

There is no blanket law that says you can't broadcast the face of a person under 18 years old...if there was, the AFL would have to pixelate out the entire crowd. If she had been charged with a racial offence, then yes, they would have had to pixelate her face. But Goodes made it clear he wasn't pressing charges, after which the girl agreed to interviews etc.

Wrong again mate, Its called the Protection of Minors Law and its well known in the media. Its there to protect kids from the media from just this type of shit, where there can be repercussions from stupid things that kids do from causing them harm at the hands of others or themselves. Its also against the UN convention to put kids in harms way through media exposure.

And they had already plastered her face all over the place well before Goodes made any comment about not wanting her charged. Channel 7 knew they had stuffed up by putting her face on TV and the compromise was that no action would be taken against her by Goodes. The AFL and the media and the players all need each other.

What should Channel 7 have done then?

The telecast is in delay as are all live telecasts in this country. The producer/director should know the laws about broadcasting minors faces and the circumstances that are permitted for this to occur. Today Tonight and ACA know this only too well. If he/she doesn't they shouldn't be there. This incident has already been investigated by the the Government and because Goodes chose not to pursue this any further, no doubt in cohoots with Channel 7, nothing else will happen. Murderers are afforded more rights than this girl was. Absolutely disgraceful that everyone thinks she should be made an example of in this way.

And before anyone says I am condoning what she said, I'm not, it was a terrible thing to say. But why isn't everyone sticking up for the overweight people that Harry O'Brien slurred by calling Tom Hawkins a Fat ****? Its a double standard and I am sure more people know someone that is overweight and not someone that is indigenous. And yet you all leap out of your worm holes to comment about this and say this is disgusting and this girl should be publicly humiliated. Did anyone tweet Harry about how disgusted they were with his comments? Did anyone care or even know or did you all just shrug it off as a harmless fat person joke? No......I doubt any of you did.

They also said that they believed the comment to be a racist one even though they had no evidence of that (they assumed). I would have thought a short reference to the incident and then get on with televising the game until they had more information but no, they were practically salivating that something controversial had happened in an otherwise boring game and they milked it for all it was worth. Then the next day they get on their moral high horse and pixelate her face when doing an interview with her and her mum.... give me a break

I was watching when it happened and I knew there would be more outrage about what she said and not the fact a minor was plastered all over the TV. They had to pixelate her face otherwise they were going to cop a 250k fine.

Because being fat is a legitimatly insultable trait for a footballer.
Complaining about that's like calling it discrimination that overweight people never get jobs as jockeys.

No its not, it has nothing to do with being fat or called an ape. Its about being vilified, fat, bald, black, ape whatever. If you want it stopped in one area then you have no right to say something in another. There can't be one rule for some and then no other rules apply. Its all or nothing. You either think about what you say and who you offend or throw the whole lot out the window and say whatever the hell you want. Harry has admitted calling players homos' but the AFL doesn't care about this and they wont until a player comes out as gay and then the shit will hit the fan if its ever said again. Just like what has happened here. It either all stops or HTFU and its open slather. There is no middle ground.

Bullshit. Physical fitness is integral to the job of an AFL footballer.
Racial makeup, sexual preference and follicular density are not.

Not to mention weight is by and large the product of freely chosen behavior.

This argument is ridiculous. Might as well say it's out of bounds to insult someone for being a bad kick. Or being stupid. Or slow. Or old. Or young. Or short, or tall.
And it's nowhere near as bad calling someone fat as calling them ugly, ugliness has nothing to do with footballing ability and people have less control over it.

Go back to bashing the media, that was good.
