This needs to be emphasised for the dimwitted.

Scully's remuneration weighs heavily in any compensation, as well as his draft position (1).

When a former no. 1 draft pick is offered $1mil per year the sheer size of the remuneration will greatly influence the compensation. Try reading the rules that are in place.

I hope this clears thing up. But I'm too aware of this sites average IQ to suspect it will.

And, as someone mentioned earlier, Port offered picks 8 and 9 for pick 2 last year (and I think some dud players would have had to be tossed in because you cannot trade solely in draft picks). They wanted Jack Trengove that badly and we turned them down. That's an indication of how strong pick 1 is in the free market. It's hardly unfair on other clubs if Melbourne is given two mediocre first round draft picks. If anything, Melbourne is losing out.

What is unfair is what Geelong got for Ablett but that's done and dusted.

You all know that they wouldn't get picks 1 and 2 right?

They would get 2 mid to late first rounders. In a compromised draft thats about picks 15 and 12.

This is about the right compensation IMO. The only reason Eddie went on this rant was to claim that Thomas was twice the value of Scully and tried to push his value up

Well it's not. The only right compensation would be pick 1.

That depends on where they finish on the ladder when they decide to use one of the picks...

This is true. If they finish last in the next couple of years, their compensation pick would be pick 2. Do they have to nominate which year they are going to use it prior to knowing their finishing position or just prior to that draft?

If they just nominate middle of first round picks, that would be reasonably appropriate.

Whilst I agree with ODN that he hasn't yet done anything to devalue his #1 pick status (despite Trengove and Martin performing at far greater levels than him), mkII.

lost credibility on that one. Scully marginally outperformed Trengove in their first seasons getting better B+F results as well as higher possession counts. Scully has been injured for 12 weeks this year yet still come back to play great footy. You obviously don't even watch scully.

Has anyone thought why Scully has been offered so much money by the GWS? Because he is worth it! There is a reason they offered Scully a million a season and a reason why talented players like Callan Ward got offered 750,000. Becasue Scully is at a different level to these guys.

It should simply be like for like.

Scully was pick 1, and has performed probably around the 10th best player from that draft excluding injuries. So he is worth pick 10. That is all.

Start of the year. Makes it challenging. IMO it probably means clubs would nominate to use them in a strong draft (like next year is predicted to be) rather than when they think they'll bottom-out.

For the record, if traded it remains attached to the finishing position of the original team (in this scenario, Melbourne).

Collingwood supporters see Eddies remarks as "There is no way Scully is worth x2 1st rd picks", which I agree with. The only thing is Eddie, as always, goes above and beyond by trying give Collingwood as much of an advantage as possible by adding "If Scully is worth x2 1st rd picks then Thomas is worth x4 1st rd picks" which the Collingwood supporters dismiss as a passing remark, but everyone else knows is Eddie planting the seed to get HUGE compensation if Thomas does decide to leave.

In all fairness
Ablett was worth x2 1st rd picks
Thomas is worth less, possibly a 1st rd pick and a 2nd rd pick (eg band 1 1/2)
Scully is worth a little less, so a 1st rd pick (a band 2 compo pick)

Scully was pick 1, and has performed probably around the 10th best player from that draft excluding injuries. So he is worth pick 10. That is all.

Disagree. If a club took a KPP who is going to naturally take longer to develop, they'd be penalised massively under this system.

Exactly Im sure Collingwood would of been wrapt with two picks in the 50's for Ben Reid and Nathan Brown after two years.

Why do Collingwood supporters feel obliged to defend Eddies position.

Of course the compensation is reasonable. It is based on age (therefore potential time left in the system) and contract payments.

If GWS are enticing Scully over with an 800K per year deal that Melbourne cannot match then they are effectively setting the level of compensation Melbourne will receive.

Eddie is just stirring up controversy for the heck of it, maybe also on the off chance a player like Thomas gets poached.

The compensation is so dependant on where we finish in the year we use the pick that it's really tough to say what he is worth. Band 1 if we finish last is pick 2 and pick 12 which is more than he is worth. If we finish top 4 and have band 2, we get pick 15, clearly not worth it.

Collingwood can talk ..... here's some interesting reading Eddie.

Collingwood's Draw

Look at how the AFL have gone out of their way to ensure that Collingwood have a dream run
so that they finish top four. Eddie McGuire claimed the Brisbane Lions got salary cap
concessions to win their premierships, however in the history of the VFL / AFL has any side
has had a draw like Collingwood.

Read the following and pass it onto your friends. It makes you lose faith in the way the AFL
is heading when you realise the special treatment that Collingwood receive.

Question: Including this Queens Birthday Monday, of the last 22 games played by Collingwood
(including four finals matches) how many games have they played at the MCG.

Answer: They have played 19 of their last 22 games at the MCG, the other 3 were played at
Etihad Stadium. They have also had 1 Bye.

Question: When was the last time Collingwood played a match interstate.

Answer: It was the 9th July 2010, eleven months ago. In round 15 of 2010 they played Port
Adelaide in Adelaide. Their next interstate match is against Sydney in Round 14 on the 25
June 2011, which is 352 days after the last interstate match they played.

Question: Including this Queen's Birthday Monday, of the last 18 Home and Away matches
played by Collingwood (the other 4 were finals), how many times has their opponent come off
an interstate match the week before?

Answer: Incredibly in 11 of Collingwood's last 18 Home and Away games the side they have
played had an interstate match the week before. On top of this, in Round 1 of 2011 they
played Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium, who had to travel from Adelaide. So in 67% of their
last 18 Home and Away games, their opponent had to travel the week before or had to travel
that week.

Round Collingwood's Where the Opponent
Opponent played the week before

16 in 2010 St Kilda Brisbane
17 in 2010 Richmond MCG
18 in 2010 Carlton Perth
19 in 2010 Geelong Sydney
20 in 2010 Essendon MCG
21 in 2010 Adelaide Crows Brisbane
22 in 2010 Hawthorn Launceston
1 in 2011 Port Adelaide Had to travel from Adelaide
2 in 2011 North Melbourne Perth
3 in 2011 Carlton Brisbane
4 in 2011 Richmond MCG
5 in 2011 Essendon MCG
6 in 2011 Western Bulldogs Perth
7 in 2011 Had the Bye
8 in 2011 Geelong Skilled Stadium
9 in 2011 Adelaide Adelaide
10 in 2011 West Coast Eagles Perth
11 in 2011 St Kilda Perth
12 in 2011 Melbourne MCG

Question: Who do Collingwood play in round 13 of 2011, the week before their first
interstate match in nearly 12 months. (This match will be played at ANZ Stadium in Sydney,
where Collingwood have a very good record)

Answer: They have the Bye, while Sydney their opponent for Round 14 have to travel to
Melbourne to play Carlton on a Sunday before fronting up against Collingwood the following
Saturday.

Question: Since Round 16 of 2010, up to Round to 13 of 2011, how many times has your club
had to play a game interstate.

Answer Melbourne Based Club Games Played Interstate

Collingwood None
Carlton Five
Essendon Three
Geelong Five
Hawthorn Nine (Four in Launceston)
Melbourne Five
North Melbourne Five
Richmond Three
St Kilda Four
Western Bulldogs Six

Imagine if your club got the dream run that Collingwood receive. You would expect to make
the finals, finish top four and have a decent shot at winning the premiership.

So are Collingwood that good or have the AFL created the situation where they practically
hand them over the premiership.

Who cares what Eddie thinks, he's not making the decision.

Didn't Adrian Anderson say Melbourne would get 2 1st round picks if Scully leaves? If so, that's what will happen and Eddie can deal with it.

If Scully was a Collingwood player, Eddie would be arguing that 2 first round draft picks are not enough.

Exactly right, He is as 1 eyed as they come and could giff a **** if every other club went out of the AFL and pies were playing with themselves (pun). I wouldnt take much notice of ED he cares about collingwood and not the game or any other club

Didnt Port offer the Dees pick 8 & 9 for pick 2 (Trengove) in the 2009 draft?

doesnt that say it all?

Does Scully = G Ablett Jrn?

No he doesn't, that says it all.

Scully has done nothing to date to even come close to being worth G Ablett Jrn, so how come they are seen as the same by the AFL?

This is 'the squeaky wheel getting the oil', Demons are crying so loud the AFL needs a big dummy to keep them quiet.
