Mackie on SEN just then was pretty s**t.

Basically said they had only just moved Esava to defence and want to see if he has a good year and raises his value for the next trade period.

They don't want to play him.

s**t man management.

Garbage. Betting on a breakout year in a new position outweighing being out of contract after ****ing him on a reasonable trade request. Okay, guy.

I wonder how tactical Geelong's decision was not to trade Ratugolea to Port Adelaide?
In hindsight maybe Geelong didn't want to trade him to a club that could potentially contend next year which could impact on their ability to go 'Back 2 Back'.
We've beaten Geelong in two recent finals with our one glaring weakness our lack of height/size in defence.
Given how difficult Premiership's are to come by, maybe Geelong didn't want to strengthen a rival to their detrement.

Odd to say that. He definitely won't sign a contract if he's having a great year mid-season, but not locked in the 22, now he's seen the power of being uncontracted. Lots of talk about how you need to pay overs for a contracted player but can offer well under for uncontracted (see: Ollie Henry - source: Geelong).

So best case scenario for them is he has a good year, makes it as a backup defender, and ends up walking for free or getting a fairly low pick, as he still won't be best 22 and doesn't have a contract. Don't see him playing a majority of games in the AFL with their current defence barring injury. Worst case, he's delisted.

If DeKoning breaks a leg in preseason Ratugolea starts the season at CHB for Geelong. They will keep Blicavs on the ball.
Yea Geelong are doing the right thing by keeping him.

We should have spent our time chasing someone who has played defence and isn't contracted.

Some great comments from Cripps there.

On Mackies; “We allowed Cooper Stephens (Hawthorn) to go and Jordan Clark (Fremantle) last year for more opportunities..."

But doesn't really mention Tim Kelly.

Tell me, what do Kelly and Sav have in common? Hint. Stephens and Clark do not share this trait ;)

Yep and this sentence really sticks the knife in..

“We’re just really disappointed, obviously for us, but even more so for Esava who was desperate to get to our footy club." (i.e. and desperate to leave Geelong)
