Why is this board so obsessed with James van Es? In all of the Callum Twomey draft articles, the Knightmare draft articles, the Rookie Me articles, he's barely if ever mentioned.
So what, they make mistakes with their predictions, both under and over rating players.

We need a KPD, the best 2 will go top 20-25, he has the tools we need. We dont need another ****ing flakey flanker

His physical testing in the Combine was very good and that is what has piqued some peoples interest. The reason why no one rates him is that he doesn't use those physical abilities in games and as I see it, is a fairly bland Riley Grundy-like defensive stopper that is very physically developed for his age. Comparatively, Hayes and Busslinger are less physically developed but more 'intercept mark first' type players.

Most modern AFL key defenders, especially the elite ones, look to attack off the intercept mark and position assertively. Your Mays, Moores, Aliirs, Sicilys etc.

There is probably a bit of upside there if he can start using his speed and leap to his advantage. But at the end of the day these sorts of players are fairly common - there would be 4 or 5 others in the draft pool who exhibit similar playing characteristics - and they mostly get taken late.

I'd personally be happy to take him as a project. But the question is if he is good enough to take at 33 or does he get to our back end pick.

I'm no fan of geebung and would probably only support them against the tingles or occasionally against some of the other kissed on the appendage Vic teams, but those who were around 50 odd years ago would be aware they were high up on the list of the most derided clubs in the old VFL for decades, and were known as the Hand Baggers!

They have turned that around to now be a very successful take no prisoners pack of campaigners, hated by many and maybe even a tad like the old Port Adelaide many of us grew up idolising.
Our current coach could have been the poster boy of their handbaggers era. No surprise the 'it's a tough game and someone has to lose' mentality has permeated the club

Geelong: Doesn't release tall utility playing VFL for 2nd round pick so player can play AFL.

Port Adelaide: Releases required SANFL listed tall utility Luke Surman to make sideways move to direct SANFL rival mid-season free of charge and then they win flag by 1 point.

In an alternate universe, we've got Ratugolea at full back at AFL level, and Surman as an SANFL listed full back at SANFL level. Instead of Clurey and Lord respectively getting embarrassed.

Wouldn't surprise me if they play him as a forward with Hawkins time coming to an end.

Anyone have access to The Advertiser article saying there's another chapter to this one?

Yeah, nothing really that we don't already know, but this bit suggests that a key back might be the main target with what remains of our draft picks:

Cripps didn’t rule out the Power again making a play for Ratugolea at the end of next season.
“We will certainly follow Esava, we’d love him at our footy club, but 12 months is a long time,” he said.
“But it has been well documented that an area of need for us is our key backs, and bringing some players to the club to give us depth.
“So we will certainly explore that and track Esava and see how it is in 12 months or so.”
Port Adelaide met with Ratugolea a fortnight ago, wanting him to add height to a backline that had been reliant on Aliir Aliir, Tom Jonas, Trent McKenzie and Tom Clurey against taller opponents in the past few seasons.

According to Tredders....

Geelong would have traded Esava Ratugolea but baulked at sending him to Port Adelaide.

They were happy enough with pick 33 for a guy who played only four games this season.

But the Cats see Port as a threat and didn’t want to strengthen a rival, knowing the big ruckman/utility would seriously improve the Power.

I wish teams would occasionally baulk at sending players and or high picks to Geelong. No one seems to give a shit about strengthening them every year.

We've beaten them in 2 QF's and pushed them when we play at AO the last 3 years. Big finals aren't played at Kardinia Park where we are ratshit against Geelong.

They would have traded him to North Melbourne or GWS or Hawthorn.

Bet Esava is loving his current club right now. "Hey mate, we don't rate you enough to play you in our side and we were offered a fair deal to trade you away, but we decided that even though we don't want to play you, we don't want to let Port Adelaide play you either. Anyway, see you at VFL training in a month?'

Absolute dog act from Geelong.

It's ruthless. It's completely without ruth. Meanwhile at Port...

Julie Garner is famous for playing a great character on Ozark named Ruth... it's pretty much all she's known for... that's her in the picture on the left with the Port scarf. It was an attempt at levity.
Gotcha. Genuine question. Is the Ozark any good, heard it ended poorly.
