It's because they've been stuffed over by a such a majority of people that they may as well just dump and burn. I don't blame them for jumping ship either.. I don't think the club realises the damage it's done to be honest. Those 34 players are role models to a wide range of people. I feel particulary sorry for families of supporters with young children who don't understand how bad cheating is.
Wow, my 8y.o keeps going on "what's going on Dad , are we going this year" ? It's bloody pathetic that I have to sit him down and explain to him why his idol Dyson Heppell is missing a season of football. Pathetic.

How old? Change teams and explain why later when he understands. It's a horrendous example set for young supporters.

Maybe Parish or Francis will show a bit this year and grab his attention as players to follow.

The worst thing of '99 was not being pipped by Carlton but with Hird being injured (Shane chartes anyone ?very suss)That flag would've been so sweet without him there. But then he went on his royal tour the next season.
You would have been smashed in 99 anyway

This to me is what will really further the damages. How long until kids choosing a team will follow Essendon again?

They might miss an entire generation of supporters. It's very possible they will be the next Melbourne team to fold. Might be 5-10-15 years, but another will.

Well I can't speak for everybody, but my shrine is well and truly intact.

They always hated him and never wanted him as coach.
Nah, well not exactly. A lot of us including me never wanted him as coach. Loved him as a player but I always felt he never really wanted to coach Essendon. He just felt like it was his destiny and he had to do it as so many people at the time were telling him to.

I had a bad feeling right from the start. He just didn't look right. Talk right or even give me the body language of someone who was confident.

I've been thinking about the way Hird has rubbed Essendon*'s name in the dirt, cost the club millions and set it back 10 years.

Has he even offered a formal apology to the members for the damage he's done? I think he should. It would be nice if he also offered to cover the players' legal bills. I realize there is more chance finding snow on the surface of the sun than either of these things happening but wouldn't it be nice if instead of pretending to be "shocked" and "outraged" all the time he could just for once demonstrate a little remorse for what he's done, and God forbid stop trying to play the victim? His reputation is already in the toilet and will be for the rest of his life so he has nothing to lose by showing a little honesty - and then I'll be the one who's shocked to be sitting here.

I sincerely hope that no one turns up to his ABC interview. It would hurt him far more to think that no one even bothered with him. A strong show up even of those against him and he'll think he's still somehow relevant. His denial smacks of bad advice, ego and narcissism. The quicker this stain on the game disappears the better.

I don't think we will get much more out of Hird. He's been apologetic about the whole thing. Just hasn't taken ownership and he never will. At least we can all say this. He will never be back invoved with the AFL at any significant level ever again. That's going to have to do for us.

Kids don't get to choose teams. If they want to go the footy with me, they let me choose for them, and they follow Hawthorn.

There is still a tiny, tiny part of me that wants to see him own up to his responsibilities for the sake of his own character. Fatally flawed as he is the guy was a great player and as with Carey or Ablett watching a famous star destroy his reputation is always a tragedy. Wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't said "I take full responsibility" right at the beginning of the saga before taking none whatsoever, that's made his conduct seem even worse.

I don't know if his parents are still alive but if they are his old man needs to shake some sense into him and tell him to act like a man instead of running away from the mistakes he's made. After the way Essendon* supporters have worshiped him and stuck up for him in the face of ridicule for 3 years they absolutely deserve to hear him apologize to their faces for what he's done - because by constantly lying and trying to prop up the facade that he's the victim who did nothing wrong he is virtually playing them for fools and spitting in their faces.
