Essendon's Talls

Essendon has a problem. We have too many talented talls to fit in our side. Pretend for a moment you're an opposition recruiter, and you need someone, what would you be interested in offering Essendon for any or all of the their tall players.

This is a thought experiment only, none of them are on offer that I know of. In keeping with that, ignore the peptide thing, which might be a factor in real-world calculations but in this instance we're talking purely football ability. I've omitted Hille and Fletcher for the sake of the exercise.

Michael Hurley, Patrick Ryder, Tom Bellchambers, Joe Daniher, Jake Carlisle, Cale Hooker, Tayte Pears, Scott Gumbleton

Wouldnt mind Pears if he was to come cheap... 2nd or 3rd rounder?

But i have always felt that the Dons should trade off someone like Ryder in return for a really good midfielder.. Dont need all them talls..

BTW, you forgot to mention Gumbleton, he could be another one of the trade table this year?

Hurley and Pears if the price was cheap. 2nd rounder for both?? Gumby is the one i want and pears would be good depth.

Hurley AND Pears for a second rounder... Are you ******* insane?

I think he meant a seconder rounder each for them? I'd disagree with Hurley being worth a second rounder, kid has serious potential as a KPD and it was good to see him play on Waite in the last half or last quarter.

He'd be worth a first rounder easily.

Pears is worth surely more of a second or third rounder.

I'm interested to know what Bomber fans think what Brisbane would have to give up for Gumbleton though. I think there is a good chance we will chase him.

I read it as a 2nd rounder for both. Either way, it would definitely be a no. Hurley is worth a decent first round pick. Considering Freo's first round pick might not fall until 15+ would not do that trade.
Pears, on form now is only worth a third rounder, a few years back you'd be looking at an early second/late first when he was in good form.

I'm not sure about Gumbleton, it will all come down to how he plays for the rest of the year, if he finds form, could be a second rounder. But, that might be a little rich.

Given the value on talls, and the fact that all of ours have demonstrated potential high upside at some point in time, I couldn't see any of them going for less than a 2nd rounder each. Especially as we would really want to keep them all (salary cap permitting), and how much use is a third round pick anyway?

A middle second rounder is now pick 27 ignoring any priority/free agency picks. Not exactly a bonanza. Obviously some guys would be worth more than that.

I think our biggest problem is rucks. I wouldn't be too upset with downgrading one of Ryder or Belly to a more mediocre ruck as I'm not sure if we can get full value out of both of them on the park. But doing a trade like that is tricky, and we'd almost need two extra rucks since Hille is surely retiring this year. So very hard to do. You would kind of be seeking to trade say Ryder (as an example) for a solid back-up, a potential ruck and a second rounder. Just not sure if you could do that, and if you can't probably not as much value in doing it.

Would love to know our salary cap situation. We could afford Monfries on the lesser offer we made (not Port's), so we must have some room, but a few guys would be asking for more this year.

Essendon almost got two good picks last year for Hooker, so decent talls always attract a premium. Pears wisn't worth much, but none of the others would come cheaply - or at least shouldn't.

Gumbleton didn't wanna leave last yr.. What's changed?

I think he made a mistake not looking for another chance anywhere else, but understand his loyalty to Essendon. Did he get more then a 1 year deal in the end?

I would still look at him for Richmond, but i'm not sure if he is injured again this year?

Would absolutely shop Bellchambers around, out of contract and GWS have already stated they are after a first ruck, he's also the right age for the Pies to be interested. Pick up a Currie or look for a Giles in the state leagues for back up. We're not getting the most out of both him and Ryder by playing them in the same team. Pears future may come down to what others are doing namely Fletcher and if Hooker is not happy about being on the table while in contract last year, cant afford to lose both. Gumby's stock's have risen whatever he decides he wants to do.

With Smokin' Joe in the mix now, It's quite difficult to see Bellchambers and Ryder both being in the side full time especially when Daniher can ruck aswell.

As good as I think Bellchambers could be, we definately need to shop one of the rucks around.

We could do worse than receiving a really good young mid which oozes explosiveness. Will Hoskin-Elliot?

FWIW, I honestly believe we'd knock back the #1 pick if it was offered to us for Carlisle. We have some serious quality tall stocks at the moment, pity the mids aren't at the same level.

Would trade Jamar + 2nd rounder to GWS for pick 10 (overs, but they can afford to pay it), then send 10 to Essendon for Bellchambers plus a 1st/2nd rounder (depending on ladder position) - and boom.
