Does anyone get the feeling Ethan Hughes is the next Sam Menagola.

Bit of a blunt instrument but size wise could be a wrecking ball, he runs all day. Would monster most midfielders.

I get the feeling coaches pigeon hole players a lot, I bet Sam Collins gets drafted this year. And makes it,

Hughes maybe. I was really excited about his prospects but he can’t get a look in. Hopefully he gets a game soon and takes his chances, he can be a player.

Collins no. Too slow for the AFL but it’s good to see him doing well.

Hughes had a limited pre season and sice then has struggled with his kicking

He hasn't been the same as last year

He's having to play as a KPD for Peel atm and I don't think it suits him. Like Duman, he always look best when he can run off and attack from defence. He'll build and smash a game in the coming weeks and put his hand up for selection. I still kind of wish they'd throw him around the place just to see if he has something to offer elsewhere on the ground (ie midfield or forward). If we are willing to try Nyhuis as a defensive forward I don't get why we wouldn't give Hughes a go in other roles given his athletic profile.

Wouldn't hurt to give it a go. I like the forward role

I'm going to cut and paste a comment I made in the Peel thread the other day for anyone who thinks Hughes is no good.

"Last year I sat on the wing on the railway side at Subi (great seats btw). I remember this one time, just in front of me, Ethan Hughes went for something like a 2nd, 3rd and 4th effort against an opponent (fairly high rated IIRC), and eventually won himself a free kick. Must have stacked up 3-4 one-percenters in that passage of play, and then kicked a beautiful I50 that showed skill and vision. Later in the game he had taken a bit of a run from HB, and kicked another ripper I50 to the advantage of his team-mate. Everyone around me agreed he was a star in the making - whispers of being 'almost Fyfe-like' in his much bigger size, his attack on the footy, his ability to win the footy, his tenacity, and how much he was having a break out year. He was announcing himself.

What the hell has happened???"

FWIW Hughes >> Menegola IMO

So he played a good wafl game? Menegola>>>>>>>>>>Hughes.

Hughes has all the physical attributes but not sure he's ever shown much, y'know footballing ability. Along with Logue this medium defender position he's been pigeon holed into probably says quite a bit about his lack of footy nous/skill.

Talk of comparing him to Fyfe (or even Menegola) are so far off it when he's never actually played any midfield.

He looks incredibly impressive physically, and I've seen some glimpses of ability that suggest he could be a great player. Not everyone stamps their authority in the first few years... it may be a slow-burn.

I'd persevere and think we may start seeing the good sometime next year.

I had him as our second best youngster last year. Impressed me a lot more than what I expected him to. He still makes my best possible B22.

The buddy of mine has been hampered all pre season. He should get given a chance inside the middle, as he has the physical attributes to do it. Often tried as the Ibbotson type role with his elite marking and body work. But just been underdone most of the season, maybe primed for a huge pre season along with Logue..

Didn't he have off-season surgery on his elbow or something? Lots on here write players off too soon for not being Fyfe like at all times...

Like Yeo, Hughes was always compared to Fyfe and will be a midfield bull but also like Yeo he is no where near Fyfes level and should be treated as such. He’s a medium defender who’s been kept out by Luke Ryan. Impressed a lot last year, not sure where he fits going forward though as soon he’ll have Logue competing for same position.

With Fyfe and Blakely injured we need a strong bodied mid. Tom North or Hughes would be options to try if fit. Hughes has talent and you could see him improving. Has to be given time, especially if he has been injured.
