Expectations for 2025

Losing Oh No GIF by Star Now

I mostly want to see a different gameplan, as well as the ruck and center square weak point starting to sort itself out. The sense of a coaching wheel turning. Even if it looks a bit nondescript at times like with Simmo during 2014.

Another semi-competitive year in the bottom 4 like 2024 will be tolerable, as long as player development is palpable. W/L aside, the worst is that sense of another wasted season, youth plateauing/injured and oldies carrying. Or a bad month slipping back into chronic uncompetitive. Also don’t want to see Chesser, Petch and particularly the MSD gems (which seem to be treated more expendably) continue to fall into selection/positional neglect and delist zone.

We have an extremely dangerous forward line, Allen, Waterman, Ryan, Williams, Owies, Cripps and Long will be more than a handful for any team they play.
Our challenge is increasing standards in all areas training, intensity, application, self respect in regards to standards, on and off field.
Off field coaching and staffing appointments will have a huge influence in improving standards.
I’m gonna back in huge improvements, a 20-30% improvement in our percentage.
7-8 wins for the year.

2nd last on the ladder is an absolute monty with Cornes to be throwing around that WC is "is no more", "has ceased to be", "is bereft of life", "now rests in peace" and "is an ex-parrot AFL club"

Will have pretty much everyone on earth coming at WC by years end as the Baker/Graham/Owies episode makes the Monty Python Flying Circus look like Singapore Airlines.

But the year will finish off a ripper when Pyke and Co discover a new definition of what "not selling the farm" means, plus the Hawks Hok Ball is spat out quicker than a spit from a Tennessee sheila named Hailey on a big night out and they finish 10th, with the Blues landing the holy grail (not the Monty one).

I'm expecting to finish bottom 4 right now, but once we're late in the pre-season where our first choice players have been dominating our second choice players in scratch matches I will expect us to crush our enemies, see them driven before us and hear the lamentation of their women like every year.

After our first pre season game against real opposition I'll be back to expecting bottom 4.

One top 3 pick despite 3 years in the bottom 3 will never cease to piss me off.

First rounders since we last played finals have been a real mixed bag. Chesser a dud, Ginbey a dud in the guts but looks alright as a defender, Hewett dead, Reid a star, Pick 12.

It hasn't been great.

Better luck late in the draft with Hough, Long (although he's been played as a small forward who doesn't kick goals...), King Waterman, Jack Williams etc.

A lot riding on Reid, Hewett's feet transplant being successful, Gov and Yeo staying fit and what a new coach can bring.

We might climb to 4th last.
We have bottled the last three drafts. We should have been exiting with three elite inside mids. Instead we have one plus a B grader in Ginbey.

I think this season showed that when the players gave a shit, we played ok. We were at least competitive.
A change in attitude needs to be our biggest focus which a new coach should be able to bring. Mini is said to have a great rapport with his players, so hopefully that comes through.

One thing that the new coach said during his first interviews was that he was going to bring a style that would suit the team. Hopefully that means players will be played to their strengths and not forced into a rigid system. The way Collingwood and Hawks play looks like players have some freedom to take the game on, which looks more enjoyable for the players.

With all the elderly statesman coming into the side i believe we will be more competitive than the last few years. The older players we got over the trade period will defintely improve the side.
Outs
Darling was struggling maybe a new team will help him.
Barrass just couldn't move the ball quick enough for my liking but a very good defender
Gaff great player in his time but got left behind with pace.
Ins
Graham gives a good competition
Baker will improve the pace side of things and is very reliable
Owies still have my doubts if he is going to make the team better just have to wait and see
It will be a good short term fix in my opinion and help our young players along the way.

Bottom 4 - but I think 7 wins should be a reasonable bench mark.

Will come down to the injury list as the depth is just not there. If we cop a bad run then it could get extremely ugly.

Hopefully the new coach can spark some decent form and uncover a few surprises from the playing group.

Worst then last year. Kelly and Yeo aging fast.

Ugly scenes such as booing the players when they walk off the ground occuring.

I have a feeling 2025 will be a breaking point for many. Part because of our trade moves and also our lack of improvement for years.

Second last is locked. Norf to leap frog us with their young mids and people recruited this year

100 percent.

Pick 2 and 3 should never have been traded away.
I'd much rather sheezel, reid and FOS lining up for us than ginbey and an anticipated Hewitt return from Injury.

It's botched and we have wasted the shit years.

Never mind, I think we might jump and have a dead cat bounce to around 13th and then return to the bottom after yeo, McGovern and Kelly fade into the distance.

Hopefully we don't botch our second round of bottom 3 finishes. And can pick top quality players, that is unless Tasmania get all the picks for the next 10 years

Hmm, seems a tough gig in all reality (certainly reading some of the previous posts).
If we won 8 games, we might only be one or two spots above on the ladder eg - 14th?
But going on last years ladder, if we 'somehow' got 11 wins (miracle), then there's a whole bunch of traffic stuck on 11 wins, finishing with Bombers at 11th place.
Doesn't quite work like that of course and it's different every year.

But if we underestimate the new players, new coach, new gameplan, improvement of existing players etc, and it turns out a bit better than expected, we could land accidentally or otherwise in that traffic jam between say 16 and 10 on the ladder, depending on percentage.

I'm a glass half full person and am weary of the pick #3 debate permeating every thread on this website. I'll take a punt on players standing up to replace TB and JD who were on their way out remember. The midfield will show a general improvement (not discounting Yeo+Kelly's slow demise) with new changes/inclusions. Hewett needs to be fit (or fitted, surgically with wheels). I'll take a punt on the new coach shuffling the magnets and reinventing some players, with a faster game style.

The forward line is solid, with further options available. Just need to sort out the ruck, forward entries and forward pressure, which you'd expect them to be addressing. The 3 amigos have been brought in for a reason. Oscar will be a force again.
We'll win more home games and be far more competitive away.
Optus will head towards becoming a fortress again.
We will (eventually) get another good midfielder.
Win 9-10 games! It's all good.... (now where'd I leave that bottle of gin?)

8 wins, 80%+

We werent an awful team this year, just had no level of consistency and missing a few things positionally which we should be better able to cover next year.

I think our midfield will be a lot more functional with another year into Reid and Hall(depth), and adding Graham and Baker if theyre nothing more than rotations still makes a big difference. I feel like Hutchinson will be an amazing recruit for us, an absolute steal in the MSD. Regardless of who we get in the draft, Hewett will basically be like a new recruit too, be good to add another body in the middle.

If we can figure out how to transition the ball effectively and not let the opposition freely hold onto the ball, that will go a long way. I think a large part of this is just fitness too. Better base to work off fitness wise going into next year should put us in good stead.

Our backline is weaker obviously, but our forward line should be stronger with a fit Allen, and Darling out giving us better structure with 1 less tall in the fwd line.
If HEdwards can stay fit and just be a B-grade KPD thatll be fine. If Bazzo can just be a player then we're on.

Turning Perth into a genuine advantage location again.

7 wins (minimum) at Optus Stadium.

Anything interstate a bonus for now.

Need to rebuild from the ground up which means rebuilding a House of Pain scenario....

On "Anything interstate a bonus for now", I expect WCE to play Richmond twice in 2025 and we should beat the Tigers in Melbourne (and in Perth)
