F1 F1 2023 - The Rise of Oscar

I’m just so disappointed, watching Oscar drive around in that absolute s**t tractor of a car when he’s got way more talent than that. I feel the same way for Lando. Watching Oscar overtake Hülkenberg on the outside around that corner just shows how great he can be, and yet he’s stuck in a car that is so bad, that even if you qualify it in the top 10 it ends up well out of the points. That update they’re bringing in silverstone better be a miracle or it’s gonna be a wasted season for Mclaren and their drivers.
He's really only got himself to blame. Could've been in the Alpine had he been a touch more patient.

webber has a lot to answer for there. mclaren pinching rob marshall from red bull might help turn things around.

disappointing performance from mclaren. not only oscar. norris didn't impact after losing his front end.

Would have been better for Oscar's career to have stayed at Alpine. Have a couple of good years, expectation would be finishing around 7-12. Then get into a top 2 car and fight for a championship. Nice one Mark.

Shoulda coulda woulda. When he signed with McLaren Alonso hadn't announced he was leaving so he was under the expectation that he would be put in the Williams or sit out another season. He made the logical decision at the time.

Yeah hindsight is 20/20 with that. The Alpine was slightly better but the seat yet wasn't vacant. He could've been usurped by Alex Palou if he hadn't taken the McLaren offer.

He was never going to be in the Alpine, at least not in 2023. Their plan was to stick him in a client team for 1-2 years, even when the Nando vacancy opened up. That's why he went to McLaren in the first place.

Don't think that was true. Even in the Drive to Survive ep, once they knew Fernando was gone they went straight to Oscar.

Their plan was to farm him out to Williams for 2 years, as reported here:
Alpine CEO: Oscar Piastri had Williams drive, but thought he was "better" than that

They only turned to him when Alonso bailed - by which time he'd already signed with McLaren. At the time of his signing, his choices were Williams or McLaren, and he chose McLaren. There were no vacancies at Alpine at that time.

Williams vs McLaren.. now there's a no-win decision, if ever there was one!

By which time he'd already signed with McLaren.

The only way he was ever going to drive for Alpine was if they invented a TARDIS, and took him back in time, to before his McLaren signature.

Anyone with hand on heart didn’t think that McLaren could turn it around and be with the front runners this year?
The history, the romance of McLaren always would be the preferred destination over Alpine. Changing one’s name doesn’t automatically bring success.
Oscar and Webber made the right call when McLaren came calling. Especially when there was absolutely no guarantee that the Alpine F1 seat was vacant, let alone that it would be gifted to Oscar.
Wonder how many of those screaming about this move would have been happy if Oscar was shifted sideways to Williams?

I didn't. Even McLaren didn't think they would. They aren't expecting to until they have their wind tunnel up and running.

If you're happy getting a podium here and there. McLaren will never be a championship contender as a customer team.

And they likely won't as a non-customer team. Red Bull was a champion as a customer team.

Correct. Oscar and Webber had been asking fir a contract for months and Alpine kept dicking them around because they were trying to keep Alonso. If they did that they would have farmed Oscar out to Williams, which is probably the only car worse than Mclaren at most tracks.
Webber and Oscar did what they could to get him on the grid asap, it just sucks the cars a heap of shit.

Yep.
That POS car killed Ricciardo’s career and might curtail Oscars at an early stage.
But hey, they have super dooper illuminated advertising signage….
And just you wait, just you wait…. The silver bullet wind tunnel will deliver championship after championship…..

If a seat opens up at Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull the man 1st in line for that seat is Norris and the best way to take that mantle is to beat the guy that has it in equal cars.

Mclaren, Alpine, etc are stepping stone teams now they will never win championships
