Port Adelaide V Adelaide
Adelaide Oval
4:40pm

Well this is one of those 8 point games. While we have got off to a great start to the season we haven't really been world beaters and have proven to be vulnerable in several areas. Losing to Collingwood and Essendon were pretty average results. This game is closer than the form guide and key stats suggest I feel.

Form Guide and Key Stats

Ladder Position: PAFC 9th AFC 3rd

Scoring Power:

PAFC Ranked 10th avg 85.5 points per game
AFC Ranked 4th avg 98 points per game

AFC Ranked 6th avg 78.5 points per game

Contested Possessions:

PAFC Ranked 8th
AFC Ranked 1st (After last 4 games this surprised me, says a lot about the state of the game maybe)

Marks I50:

Clearances:
PAFC Ranked 2nd overall

PAFC Ranked 15th
Adelaide Ranked 8th
Leading Goal Kickers

Showdown 44 PAFC 21 - AFC 22 (5 game winning streak)
Showdowns are a special game on the AFL calendar in South Australia. Nothing like beating your cross town rival and having meaningless bragging rights around the water cooler at work the next day.

History
Time for our opposition history Lesson (PAFC loves its History)

Port Adelaide Football Club - Formed in 1476 (a full 300 years before Captain Cook landed at Botany Bay) after the Spanish Armada conquered Outer Harbor and decided to set up the slums at Alberton, something Alberton residents have prided itself in maintaining and even expanding its operations outwards to Elizabeth, Ottoway and Rosewater before making its way down south to Christies Beach.

Since no other team existed for another 350 years Port maintained a 350 year unbeaten premiership record. Something it prides itself on and proudly displays in its records. Even though its AFL history is something like one premiership and one 119 point GF loss in the last 22 years. I'm pretty sure I will get slaughtered for making such AFL results up in light of their outstanding non AFL results.

Current Form
Both teams going into this game have missed form while achieving different results. Adelaide has been able to get the job done against Mediocre opposition albeit unconvincing while Port got pantsed by fellow top 4 contender West Coast over in the West. Both teams will come into this game with something to prove.

Possible ins:
Adelaide look like gaining the big Texan Captain Taylor Walker and Vice Captain Rory 'Batman' Sloane with Knight an outside chance. In the gun though injury and form would most likely be Milera, Galluci and Fogarty

Port Adelaide look like bringing back Rockliff and SPP while Johnson and Neade will be most in the gun.

Key Match Ups

Tahlia, Doedee and Otten V Dixon

Hard to suggest bothering standing anyone else. Might as follow the norm and back in the likelihood Ports mids will just do what they do poorly every I50 and kick to Dixon. But who knows, if he gets off the leash he might just kick that 6th Goal.

Battle of the mids
Sam Jacobs, Rory Sloane, Matt Crouch, Bryce Gibbs & Richard Douglas
v
Paddy Ryder, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak, Ollie Wines & SPP

Super star midfield battle here with SPP as the rookie cameo. Both sides seem pretty well matched here and it may well be the result of Ryder V Jacobs that really determines this game.

Where will Adelaide win it:
Adelaide has the experienced players that actually like playing with each other and a competent coach. Not to say Port won't bring a game that hits Adelaide hard. At present we have been unconvincing under pressure and something Port will be likely to target. However Adelaide just have a bit more class around the ground. Port are Charlie Dixon conscious and 9/10 times in a quick centre break they will kick to him in a 40/1 contest. A suitable game plan if he had Betts at his feet but well.... Bottom line is Adelaide need to click out of 2nd gear, something we have failed to do since Sydney. Hopefully with Tex and Rory back in the side our work rate and our attack on the ball will increase. It's a big game and one that will set up our season.

Final Prediction:

Adelaide by 4 goals. Adelaide when in first gear can demolish any side in the competition and I am struggling to think of any acceptable reason to lose this match against a side that still has so many young players in it and plays slow predictable footy.

:D^^^^^^
Conclusion
.....

No Sam Gray

No Port !!!!
:p

Sooner or later they got to win one though, don’t they ?

It’s their home game and scarves will be waving. They’ll have every available idiot from their game day village there after marching from the wherever they march from.
And their coach - jiminy crickets - isn’t he that good they have signed him up for 4 more years ?????

Adelaide by plenty or port by a monfries leg break goal - oh.... wait ....

Holy ****balls, Sam Gray is their leading goal scorer?

Sam Gray?

On that, Crows by eleventy-hundred.
Yet one of their posters wants Sam Gray dropped lol...

I expect this to go down a similar path to what usually happens in a Power home Showdown in recent times. They get the jump, then we claw back and build a 4-5 goal lead, then they come back in which their crowd starts their ‘Powaaa’ chant with Boak beating his chest, but then we silence the crowd and steady to win by 3-4 goals.

I expect Port Power players will come out breathing fire since their coach implied they’re soft. If they get a run on, the Crows players might just wilt in the heat.

Plus, if the Crows players read and believe they’re red hot favourites, and sure fire certainties, it might turn their heads. They’re much better when considered the under dogs.

Which Crows team will turn up? The one that beat Richmond and Sydney convincingly, or the one that capitulated to Collingwood?

This is one of those Showdowns that is pretty hard to gauge. On form and on AFL ladder, we look to be a level ahead of the Power. But if we take a closer look, we've just beaten 2 average teams and at home in the last 2 rounds (hardly confidence boosting), and Port has just lost to West Coast in Perth (hardly shameful). I think it's going to be a tight Showdown, Crows by 14.

I think the players are beyond taking a Showdown easy, I can’t see them being complacent as they will want to win too much.

What we hope is we get a Sloane bounce and we play one of our better games. Also need Tex to be fit and moving well, if he does this and plays well we will win easily.

There won’t be an Adelaide Oval left if we did that to them in front of their home crowd.

Probably the safest thing for all is an 84 point drbing for Port Power.
The stadium wont get trashed because they will all leave early. Racist incidents, fights, unsavoury behaviour wont happen because they will all leave early.
