People wear k-mart knock-offs because they simply don't care. And why should they?

They don't and they shouldn't. But this is a forum of jumper aficionados so we get emotionally invested in this stuff haha

Don't support them by purchasing one! Pick up a cheap legit off ebay..

None on eBay, just looked. Same with Collingwood, cheapest I can see is minimum $50, was hoping for a $20 cheapie

I believe the K-Mart "knock offs" and the jumpers sold in Best and Less are still genuine AFL products and go to support the club, just a lesser quality to the retail replicas.

As I have said in the past, I have no issues with these jumpers, because not everyone can afford to shell out $100 on a jumper their child will just out grow in 2 seasons.

I have massive issues with Bali knock offs which are just blatant rip offs which benefit no one of any relevance. The amount of these jumpers I see (both WCE and Freo) around the place is disturbing.

I had the misfortune to walk past a rack of "AFL" merch in Target yesterday. The guernseys are of terrible quality, and the AFL and club logos are now those iron on plastic stickers, they aren't sublimated or sew on badges any more. Then I saw the tracksuit "onsies" in team colors, nearly had an ugliness induced panic attack and had to leave the shop!

The iron-on logos on the Sekem AFL jumpers actually look worse than the sewn-on logos. Terrible

I saw another Bali fake seller got pulled off eBay. I was so tempted to offer him 5 bucks on the eagles clash because it reminded me so much of long cat. But yeah, those fakes are terrible. At least the sekem ones are AFL licenced and some money goes back to the club.

Sekem jumpers go for about $40 wholesale. Then they mark them up to retail in the shops.
12.5% of the $40 goes to the AFL, and of that, 66% of that amount goes to the club.
So each Sekem jumper makes the club about $3.30
Not commenting on whether that's good or bad, just that's what it is.

That's pretty shit. I didn't know the club got so little. How much do they make off a genuine retail? (like a puma retail)

Depends on who sells it.
If Rebel Sport sell it, they go for about $55 wholesale, and the percentages are the same, so they make about $4.50 on a genuine retail.

However, if the club sells it, they still make the $4.50 and the $55 retail mark up. So almost $60.

Thanks, that's pretty interesting.

Doesn't all the stuff sold through rebel etc get distributed evenly between the 18 clubs regardless of how much of each clubs merchandise sells?

With the sekems I was under the impression the money was split across the 18 clubs as they are sold under the AFL banner not the clubs?

No, the AFL merchandise agreement, which is on their website works like I outlined it above.
12.5% of the whole amount is the fee, and two thirds of that fee goes to the club for whom the merchandise was for. Of the remaining one third, the AFL take the cost of running the Licensing Dept out of it, then split the rest across the 18 teams.
Sekem is no different from the Chinese company who make plastic school stationery, or the German company whose name will never be mentioned that make Essendon and Hawthorn's apparel.

I would call what you have outlined a commonly held misconception.
Someone buying a Collingwood scarf only gives Gold Coast Suns money from the 33% after the AFL have had their cut.
The only numbers I could find that cut merchandise out of overall revenue show $24 Million in 2011.
So if 2/3 of that goes to clubs on their own sales, the AFL have $8 Million to run the Licensing Dept, which would only cost one, maybe two million, so that leaves 6 or 7 Million going back to all clubs on the sale of merchandise.
So in that respect, yes, all clubs get some of that money, and $333 grand is nothing to sneeze at, for sales of other clubs stuff.

I don't think anybody here needs me to tell them what's wrong with this.
