Fall and Fall of Big Bash

Big Bash is a religion for me. I’ve travelled down from Sydney to Geelong tonight for the Renegades and Hobart. Cricket Australia doing the best they can with the hands behind their back. It doesn’t help when you have 3 concurrent leagues about to overlap with the BBL as well. Eg ILT20, SA20 and Super Smash going on at the same time.

the weather is good, so enjoy the night.

Shorten the season and have each side play 2-3 times per week. All over in a month and then all players can play the whole tournament.
Not sure shortening the season is the answer as well. Maybe have something in the overseas players contract where if you sign here, you have to be here for the whole tournament with a clause , if they get picked to play internationally - being an exception.

I said 3 concurrent leagues in my previous post , this is on top of international tours as well. And every international side wants to be playing rather than resting that’s for sure.

Then it will continue to be a shield/pennant cricketers tournament. Won't really ever grow and it is simply the little aussie 20/20 league.

The case study of Melbourne and the BBL is fascinating.

80,000 showing up for Stars vs Renegades back in 2016 at the MCG
The corresponding fixture last year had 27,000

That's a pretty big drop off.
Is it purely just the drop in international talent (Gayle/Pietersen in 2016) and the decline in performance from both teams?

Exactly, it’s the lack of quality or star power. Who is going to go see Cooper Connolly and Adam Milne?

17,000 at the G last night, be 90,000+ at the test match next week. It’s clear which format is still no1 in Australia.

out of interest, what is the crowd comparison for the Sydney derbies from then to now? (obviously it's a little bit of apples and oranges given the ground capacities)

10-15k / 20k crowds is still good for a domestic cricket comp, they'd still be making big money.
probably spent it all on the "crowd entertainment devices" like the DJ, fireworks, flamey things, and arcade games (for people who go to the cricket to do other things except watch the cricket)

that's what i can't comprehend at times - especially with 10/10 and then what 5/5? etc
don't we go to the cricket to watch CRICKET ?

Not sure if it means anything but GA is sold out for Thunder v Sixers. There could be a strong case for the Thunder moving their home games back to Accor especially the Sydney derby. I’m pretty confident they could draw at least 35k+ figure since they have had more success since leaving that venue.

And the games they play at Manuka do draw a pretty good crowd. If there was expansion Canberra would be the hot take. Canberra Comets again anyone?

Worth noting that 27,000 turned up even though it pissed down with rain for most of the afternoon and evening. They didn't even have the bat flip until 8pm, which was almost 90 minutes late.

Enjoy - at least we haven’t had that rain that we did last year which screwed things

Thinking though, who are the genuine stars on the T20 circuit that would draw a crowd?

Gone are the days of Gayle/Bravo/Russell/ABD

Windies have some good T20 players, but no massive drawcard names. Indian players obviously would be big drawcards, but they aren't allowed to play other leagues.

30,000 people turned up to watch Cooper Connolly and Adam Milne, with another million people watching on TV - and that's somehow a bad thing?

Mostly Column A, a bit of Column B.
The Scorchers have barely had any international "names" since Herschelle Gibbs and still draw big crowds. Fans go to watch their team and hopefully watch them win. The Stars had crowds because they were a competitive side then, having a big names might give you a sugar hit but people will see through it quickly if the team is crap.

Having been to the AO Tennis and F1, anecdotally I do think a lot there are a lot more theatregoer types in Melbourne and Sydney that will only turn up because it's cool to be there and not to support the team. I'm sure the Melbourne Cup is the same. Eddiesmith seems to be another one. But the main thing is they suck

Like most West Australians, completely clueless.

The Melbourne derby had a lot of bad luck post 2016, especially the MCG games, i recall the very next one was like a 44 degree day and kept many away, then one was reduced to a 25% match due to inclement weather and one may have been a washout, then both teams started to suck and it didnt matter.

But to put the 2016 game in perspective, the Stars were a gun team and hosted the grand final that year. People were flocking to the G. Why would you go now?

The Gades got a win last night, but the fact remains the general underperformance of the 2 teams in the equal biggest market is a massive concern.

The big difference is the lack of star power, you look at the stars XI that night, all international players and all recognisable.

Plus the international players on both sides, Gayle, Bravo, Pietersen and Wright. People knew who they all were.

Now you look at teams and have to look at Cricinfo to find out who’s the local and who’s the international player in a side.

"Star power" = nice way of saying "selfish w***ers". Green Goblins got it wrong from the start being overrun with divas who know nothing about building a successful club culture.

Just have to look at how the Renegades were turned around once Jason Dunstall took charge and kicked out perennial chokers like Universe Creep and DJ Douchebag.

English. The Super Smash is the Kiwi comp which starts on Boxing Day
Cheers

I get confused with the various comps and trying to keep track
Why can't they give these leagues proper names? People than might actually take them more serious instead of just hits and giggles taking the piss leagues.
