Those are some 'interesting' trades by FL18.

As with most trades, you can't really declare that they are :thumbsu: or  after just a game or two. FL18, are you aiming to bring GAJ back into your team via Shiel, assuming he returns to his 120+ output in coming weeks?

Have to ask, what is your reasoning behind the GAJ trade?
Also excellent start to the year mate, 27th is awesome

It was a guess, a calculated guess but a guess nonetheless:

a guess that he'd be out for longer than he was
a guess that when he returned he may not return right away to put up 140s

i thought i'd be able to make good use of the money to upgrade other areas of my side.

I made the same mistake as you, footylover, I brought Swan in and to be honest was a bit of a waste. Your reasoning for trading Ablett was exactly the same as mine, but I can't understand why you traded Greene?? he's been that good, that you could go Greene to Ablett +180k in 1-2 weeks. That's my plan hopefully Greene keeps his scores up. Have you got any plan for the byes or is it mainly about spreading your players evenly?

Good luck footylover18... you're really well placed!

I made two more trades last week, both pretty straightforward-

OUT: Ellis, Shiel
IN: Heppell, Horsley

Heppell and Shiel were partly influenced by the bye. I only had two Rd 12 bye backs in Malceski and Clarke, so Heppell seemed a good upgrade option for Ellis - who I thought had done his dash. I also considered trading out Geary, but thought there was probably a bit more upside in him despite his bigger breakeven.

I was tossing up between Shiel and Magner for Horsley, and decided on the former because I needed to start getting rid of some Rd 11 rookies (I also have Boyd and Rocky).

I've dropped about 2000 places in the past two weeks, so I'm pretty much cooked. I'll definitely be taking a "league first" approach to all my trading from now on. Not that a high overall ranking and league success are mutually exclusive, of course.

Still smashing it in SC though. Don't want to talk it up too much, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to win. :thumbsu:

Would be bloody incredible for someone to win DT and SC!

Come on mate! Tell us about your SC....

Tongue was firmly in cheek :)

I'm going ok though: up to 25th with decent amount of trades and team looking solid. Just got to work out how to play the byes.

But enough of derailing the thread with silly SC, we're here to discuss the much more noble game of DT!

One thing I've been giving a bit of thought to over the last couple of weeks is what to do with my rucks heading into the byes. With Big O and Redden MIA recently, there's obviously a big chance a lot of coaches will be facing donuts when their starting rucks have the bye. For my DT it'll be Giles in Rd 11 and Kreuzer in Rd 13, and in SC Giles and Maric in Rd 13.

Does anyone see merit in bringing in a third premium ruck who has a different bye (eg for me it would be someone like Sandilands, Ryder or Jolly)?

I'm a bit on the fence with this one. There's an almost guaranteed points gain over the byes (I guess anywhere between 130 and 230) and added cover over the second half of the season. But it just seems to go against all the traditional rules of upgrading.

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere.

That's a lot of money and obviously an extra trade to use. It's the money that is the main issue. A lot of money to go from O to Sandilands. All for the sake of having a nice 3rd ruck man. You'd be giving up the chance to make at least 2 upgrades to your starting lineup with that sort of coin, perhaps even 3.

I think O is a decent chance of coming back this week and if he and Geelong do well we might be lucky enough to have a backup option during the byes.

Very true. I guess it comes down to whether those upgrades are going to net you as many points as the zeros you'd cover. And the answer is probably yes.

Come on O... get back out there!

Just a regular (non-famous) coach here.
I've been thinking about this and considering then trading Giles for cash after the byes to get the cash back, but this is 2 trades to get those points.
No matter how I work it, I just keep coming back to hoping redden and big o play for the one week only, or take the donuts.

But wouldn't it be awesome to make up the ground.

Imagine if you had the Balls to start the season with Giles, Ryder, Maric.

Not sure if that would have been the best idea, you would miss out on Giles points every week. Id say that trio is brilliant for navigating the byes, but the money spent to have that extra premium ruck to begin with, could have been used for an extra premium somewhere else.

I won't be trading in the ruck unless there is an unfortunate incident such as a death or Giles gets caught on the turps with Didak.

The byes are really fascinating, and there is no clear cut way to negotiate them, as everyone needs a different approach based on their current structure.

I have a tentative plan in place, but as I may have said here before a plan is always a plan until the team lists come out tonight and your plan is no longer a plan, just a lifeless soggy hopeless waste of three days modelling.

If all goes well I intend to take a patient approach to the byes...if I took no action I would lose about 1200 points in donuts and from having to play benchies. That is assuming all my bench players are fit and selected *cough* no chance *cough*.

Trading might get you 500-600 of that back...might. People probably assume 9 trades will get you 900 points, but that would be only if you did all sideways and upgrades. And you would be in a world of hurt come round 14 with minimal trades left.

So I think most are looking at a loss of around 1000+ (depends on whether guys like O or Redden are getting a gig), 500 after trades.

Is it a good chance to move up the rankings? Again it depends on your position now, and how aggressive you plan to be during the bye period weighed up against how conservative you will need to be afterwards.

The interesting thing about it all is I am sure people are holding off making certain trades due to the byes…for example if people could do a Magner>Boyd trade the byes will be having some effect on your decision. Maybe less so if considering say Ablett as he has a round 13 bye, and DTers seem to like delaying a donut for 2 weeks.

I am not sure whether it makes sense to hold off on those ones…Boyd for 3 weeks could score 350, Magner in 4 weeks probably 300, so is Boyd better even if you take a donut? And Magner then gets a bye too…but waiting until rd 12 for such a trade seems to stack up for some reason.

Challenging decisions.

Great discussion. Have to say that I have definitely considered taking lots of donuts during the byes. I want to stay in the eliminator but think that other things could help.

On the Rucks, I have Giles and Hale (after covering an early donut) and a loaded forward line. I am strongly considering a 3 way trade to move back hale back into the forward line and get one of the rd11 bye guys in rd12 and then get a rd12 fwd in for hale in rd 13 but I really have to plan this out.

I haven't written in down enough but the thing that always seems to get me is that by trading to avoid rd11 byes I tend to end up with too many R12/13 guys from that. Again without doing all the work, I am thinking of taking donuts in rd11 and trying to level cover trades in rd12 in areas that I like rd11 players and then rd13 where I like RD12 guys but haven't fully worked this out yet!

Hope this post isn't to all over the place! ;-)

I don't know what sort of voodoo this was, but could you please do it to Jarrad Redden just before Round 11.

It is already crapshoot enough, but the Eliminator will become a complete lottery in the bye rounds.
