This year it is all about value for me, had too many "guns" in my team last year that was a bit of wated money.
I think picking the right "guns" is very important. At the start of the year I tried to pick the ones that i believed that would continue their previous years scores or increase on that, play 22 games and not drop much in price or otherwise i would rather wait and get them when i believed that they had bottomed out in price. I also tried not to get too many in one position of the ground so i had an even spread and then also would have the chance of picking up the "guns" of the 09 season. I think this plan worked pretty well for me this year and will do something along the same lines next year i think.

From my round 1 team i had 11 "guns" (350k +) and finished with 8 of those 11 which i think is pretty decent.

On another note i think that there are even more mid priced players that could provide great value for next season, i think the rucks are very good and i am tempted to even pick someone worth a bit more $$ for the bench ruck so then i can make money from that player or use it as a backup if one of my main 2 rucks fail.

I tried a similar tactic to you, but it failed badly for me. Of my starting 13 keepers, only 6 remained at the end of the year. I had to rely on rookies way to much this year. Next year im going to go for one or two top end players in each position, and then just fill out my team with mid pricers.

This isn't a fanplanner question as such...but Monty, you have all this wonderful information on previous years scores for the players that would look really nice and be really useful to be put into graphs...so we can see trends in the players scoring. Any plans for some pretty little graphs? :)

Yeah could do so much with the data. I would like a list of defenders that had the biggest drop in average from the year before.

I have a simalar plan. So far i have 4 ruckman all <310k with my cheapest ruckman being Warnock (130k i think). I plan to rotate the first 3 and possibly even Warnock through the 2 starting positions. I find the rucks to be the easiest position to predict scores for.....

I.e
1 - Mobile ruckman often dominate around the ground against the 'behemoth' Hudson/Minson/Blake types.

2 - Clark, while being brilliant offensively, allows his opposition to score at will because he stays a kick behind the play very often and he gives away plenty of free kicks.

3 - Obviously, if a team only has 1 ruckman then the other team's ruckmen are at a significant advantage.

And there are plenty more 'rules' that often ring true.

So hopefully my 3 or 4 ruckman i rotate through will be able to compensate for the potential points benefit of using the money elsewhere and also provide great cover.

Disagree with point 3 from a DT perspective. A team with one ruckmen generally allows that player to ruck all day getting heaps of hitout points and other loose possessions through midfield. This years better ruckmen all rucked single handedly for most part; Clark, Sandi, Cox (NicNat didn't play/ruck much when he was scoring well), Ryder, Jolly. As compared to Brogan & Lade, Hawks rucks, Geelong rucks etc. who both scored pretty average.

You'd be playing a risky game, I take it Ball Hog that you are the type of guy who takes smokeys as captain choices.

projected score: 1883, but potentially alot of room to move with alot of bench players over 100k

My teams (as in the 4 I've drafted up) tend to have cheaper forwards lines. One of my teams (built using Gun/Rookie) has 3 rookie fwds. None of my teams have rookie backs starting.

Moogs, I count it that your counting Buddy as a 0 for round one ;)

Yeh seems to be quite a few of the top draft rookies as possible forwards. Trengove, Cunnington and Lucas. Which means I may look to invest cash in backline. Will need cover for buddy round 1 though :(

I am a little bit confused by your reply mate. I was saying that the opposing ruckmen would be better of playing against a team with 1 ruckman than a team with 2 (Obviously dependant on the quality of ruckman/men). A team with 1 ruckman is good for fantasy purposes (because like you said that ruckman carries a heavy workload) but i believe that teams with only 1 ruckman tend to allow more points than a team with 2 ruckman.

Really, that is a bit of a strange assumption isn't it? However, you are partially right because i play what most would probably term an 'unconventional game'. In my five years playing DT i have never started a rookie, and try to avoid picking them for my bench as well. That's simply because i don't profess to know anything about them and i don't pretend like 'i know it all' either. I will only pick a rookie in my best 22 if i have seen them play conistantly in the flesh. I just stick to what i know basically, and therefore i stick to picking the players that i have seen play at AFL level.

To be brutally honest, and controversial, i think filling your team with rookies (and guns) is a pretty weak way to play dream team. To mine eye, it is basically saying, "I concede that i am incapable of picking a starting 22 that is potentially good enough to be my finishing 22." I'd definitely prefer to try and get a sensational starting 22 and not have to worry about trading except for injuries, then to start with a team expecting to trade 25% of your players.

This is mine, except if I disagree with Monty's positioning I've just picked someone of equal value in their place.

Backs:
Goddard (I think he'll still be a back, on the site I put him in the midfield)
Salopek (I'm nearly sure he'll be a back, he's Jed Adcock on the site)
Hodge
Ellis
Myers
Ladson
Waters
A. Smith
D. O'Keefe

Swan
Cooney
Cassisi
Cotchin (is Petterd on the site, because I needed someone of a similar price to pick in the backline to make up for having Goddard as a centre)
Young (was Mark McVeigh)
Scully
Jack Trengove, although I'd love him to be a forward I don't think he will be

I've noticed that the links to "08 games" and "07 games" do indeed show the scores from that season, but the numerical value when viewing the team list actually correlated to 2009 and 2008. Would it be possible to get these links updated to that?

I'll put in on the to do list. ;)

Done. Well spotted.

m0nty when calculating player prices for the following year do VS use the previous year's exact value ie. (Total Points/Total Games*5365) (option 1) or do they just use a rounded player's average*5365 (option 2) to the nearest whole number?

Judd as an example, Option 1:
(2441/22)*5365 = $595,271.1363636363636363....
round to the nearest 100th, $595,300

Option 2:
2441/22 = 110.95454545454545.... to the nearest whole number, 111
111*5365 = $595,515
round to the nearest 100th, $595,500

This has left me with about 200k left over, but IMO some of the discounts are a bit generous so I'm more likely to end up with about 100k left over.

massive problem with the rucks :) not keen on palmer? (cheaper than masten)
