If I misquote him I'll be jumped on but it was very much in terms of the vibe pro him going to Geelong for a Snickers Bar and that we owe him whatever he wants.

I can cop that from Ex-Players but not from commentators and he is an especially bad one. So overrated.
Goes back to what I posted a few pages back. It's absolute bullshit. The Victorian media once again trying to put pressure on interstate clubs to let players go for absolutely nothing so they get to live out a fairytale, and post trade week, we are completely forgotten about and left to rot once they have what they want. I watched AFL360 this evening and this shit makes me mad. Gerard Whately is one of many Geelong fan boys within the AFL media, and they try to come across as un-biased, but they clearly have an agenda. It then on flows through other media outlets with reporters making similar comments and further elaborating on what has already been said, and the noise continues to get louder and louder. Look at what is being suggested on the trade board. We pay half Gary's salary next year, and get a 3rd round draft pick. Piss off. Force the prick into retirement before we do that deal. I truly hope Mark Evans and Tony Cochrane stand strong on this one. They have said they will, I just hope they act.

Look at what he also said regarding the Geelong home game this weekend against Richmond. Comments on the game being at Kardinia Park and how good it will be having it played there with a capacity crowd, even though 30 thousand fans are essentially being shut out compared to if it was played at the MCG. He was also clearly hinting at the Geelong home final issue in his own sly way. Just happened to mention that Richmond need to try finish top 2 to avoid any potential conflict. Once again using the media to further his own agenda and put pressure on the AFL.

I debate that with you but I don't want to take thread of the OP.

Triple M's Damian Barrett says Gary Ablett's 2018 salary may be "as low as $500,000 to $600,000", but says Geelong will still have to trade a reasonable pick for him.

Barrett joined the Friday Huddle and said Ablett's current three-year deal - around $3 million to $4 million - was reasonably front-ended.

"I believe he's been paid up front a fair chunk of that," he said.

"I feel that it going into that last year of the deal, which is next year...it could be as low as $500,000 to $600,000.

"We're not dealing with a million dollar salary in play for Gary Ablett on 2018 figures, the way he's taken the money."

But Barrett believes Geelong will still have to offer up something decent on the trade table.

"This is going to have to be either a late first round or an early second round pick or an exchange of picks within that zone," he said.

Luke Darcy believes that increases Geelong's chances of landing him.

“That opens the door, Damo,” he said.

"I thought that was going to be the biggest hurdle, would be Geelong (being) chockablock in the salary cap, you'd assume, having got Dangerfield and loaded up with all the players they have.

"If that is the money, you'd think that would be manageable.”

Chris Judd, though, thinks the actual trade will be the "arm wrestle".

"The issue is not so much do Geelong want Ablett to play again at their club, because he's arguably the greatest player of all time, he's still playing terrific footy, it’s can they can give enough to Gold Coast for them to deal (with) because he’s contracted," he said.

"That'll be the arm wrestle."

Because it's top ended as I brought up weeks ago I'd be expecting not only whichever Victorian club we trade him to not only take up GAJ pay in their cap but to also give us an above average young mid that they pay for in their cap as well.

Otherwise have a Nice retirement with all the money you have already taken from us GAJ.

Doesn't work like that..

I'm expecting Evans and Coch to not be soft and work on it in exactly the way I just outlined

Otherwise Coch has allowed us members and sponsors to have had money stolen from us under false pretences with this contract.

GAJ-u don't steal from us up here on the GC.
It won't happen..

We could now go in circles now with me saying "yes it will" and you saying "no it won't".

I'm backing the Caro Wilson theory and u r backing Barrett.
Let it unfold
I'm backing trades that have happened in the past. When the player requests to go home 10 times out of 10 the team the player is going to wins out

Does Bryce Gibbs bring down that 10/10 average (and McCarthy the first time) - I'd say that average comes down when they are contracted.

If they offer nothing why do we give them something?

Gws were happy to hold onto him because they had 4 other big fwds to play.
Gibbs was happy either way.

Gibbs was happy either way.

Hah! Not if you believe all the salty Adelaide fans :D

Really hope you guys hold Ablett to the letter of his contract unless you get the deal GC wants in a trade. If that means he plays out his final year sulking in the reserves so be it.

End of first round pick seems about right, issue is the Cats don't have one

If the Cats can't satisfy us then we can't let him go as it goes against the strong stance we have taken with other players.

They do have Carlton's 2nd round pick don't they? That's as good as a late first rounder.
Geelong need a premiership now with the way they've recruited, and not drafted / developed kids. Ablett fits that bill & therefore they need to pay up for him. Otherwise make a strong stance as a club, retire him and not give a rival a free kick.
Also a large chunk of his contract was front ended. The guy has some cheek and I seriously hope he doesn't play another game for us.

Saying he "has some cheek" is an understatement.
I will use the term "con artist" If he asks for a trade and this top ended stuff is true.
I still think we should get their best mid under 25 (who would that be?) and they pay for him in their salary cap.

Otherwise GAJ can go fishing and playing lawn bowls with the top ended money he stole from us sponsors and members.

Just finished listening to the weekend footy podcasts. Since Barrett has brought up the front ended contract he's had the media seem to be jumping in him for taking the money 8 years ago and now leaving us in our time of need.

Even heard some bloke called downie say he has been the cause of all the club's problems directly or indirectly.

Sounds like he's going to be the scapegoat for the club's problems.

Carey probably the only person in the media that has presented this argument

Pretty funny

Hope Geelong man up and get a deal done early in the trade period so we can all move on
